List,
Sometime ago there was discussion about using a switch in place of a battery
solenoid in the elect system.
Have searched the archives, not found the info on what switch works for a 701
day VFR type of elect system.
Help please.

Subject: | XL PLans / Assembly Guide Question Elevator Trim Tab Install |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Larry Whitlow" <ldwhitlow@comcast.net>
Hi all
Long time listner. First Time Caller..... Oh wait this isn't the radio....
anyway
I'm building a 601XL from the kit and I'm current;y working on Drawing Page
6-T-6 Elevator Trim Tab Dated 8/05 assembly guide pages 6-T-6 6 thru 12
dated 6/05
I've laid out the cutout in the bottom skin for the Ray Allen Servo and laid
out the tab pushrod lines and the hole in the trailing edge for the horn to
move through. Also laid out the Pushrod Line and the 140mm from the trailing
edge line on the top skin
The assembly guide explains how to position the servo and drill the holes to
rivet the servo to the underside of the top skin but something seems amiss
If you have the pushrod and the servo arm lined up the servo is not centered
in the bottom skin cutout. The servo is offset inboard from the hole roughly
30 MM towards the center rib of the elevator. Some of the pictures in the
assembly guide show the servo centered in the hole and some are unclear
Only one picture even shows the center rib in the elevator.
It will all fit as drawn, but the servo is close to the rib (not an issue)
and the access cover is cloes to the rivet line of the rib (>10mm) (probably
dosen't matter) The photo guide show the cover but not the rib. I intend to
install it as per the drawings but I thought I'd ask
I suspect the Photo Guide is using pictures from the older Trim Tab that was
much smaller and the servo was mounted further inboard.
Comments? Observations All are welcome

Larry -
I recently experienced the same thing. I called the factory
(afterwards) to ask if I had done something wrong and they said it was
fine. He said that the real goal of the cutout is not to work on the
servo or even inspect the connection, but just to get it inside.
Although that seems a bit silly to me - why not just shift the hole a
bit so that you can do both - I was reassured that I had done it
correctly.
Obviously if you change your mind and decide to move the inspection
plate, I would get it signed off by the factory. Otherwise, you are
seeing it correctly and that is just the way it is!
Good luck,
Michael Valentine

Yesterday a couple of people who stopped by to look at my progress on
my 701 asked what engine I was planning. When I told them I planned
to use the Jabiru 2200 they said that they had heard that there was a
potential problem using that engine. With the 3300 RPM engine speed,
the Jabiru required a shorter prop than a Rotax. Their argument is
that with a shorter prop the Jabiru would not work as well as a Rotax
(using a longer prop) because less of the prop extends beyond the
cowling. Note: My calculations are with the Rotax running at 5800 RPM
and a 2.43 gear box the prop is only turning 2380.
Has anyone else heard this from a reliable source? Has anyone
experienced any issues with the Jabiru on a 701?
