If so, it is a fine looking aircraft. Good color selection. I'm just installing the bungees for the main gear on my 601 HD. After spending some time building a device to compress the bungees, I found that simply shaping the bungees with temporary plastic ties was enough to install the gear with the bungees and the stop plate at the top of the wing. It looks like the gear will protrude above the wing about 3 eighths of an inch without stretching the bungees. Is that the experience others have had? I installed the AN3 bolts through the bottom bearing with the bolt head on the outside per normal practice. It appears that the nut end of the bolt may rub against the bungees. Has anyone put the bolts in backwards with the nuts on the outside to give the bungees more room? I put a small dab of sealer on the treads and voila no more leaks. Do not put sealer on the last few tread at the end of the screw or it will get in the tank. 701/912/400 hrs Carl ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 10:11:23 AM PST US From: "Charles Kyle" Subject: Zenith-List: 701 Electric Trim Binding --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Charles Kyle" Hi, I have installed the electric trim kit on my 701 elevator. When I move the tab +30 to -30 degrees from center, the tab/hinge binds at about center of travel (neutral trim). I can see the skin oilcan slightly at the binding point and the tab itself curves at one extreme but is flat at the other extreme. I do not want the binding because it would load the servo more than is necessary. Has anyone had any experience with something like this or have any suggestions? Thanks Chuck Kyle ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 10:31:17 AM PST US From: Larry McFarland Subject: Re: Zenith-List: 601 HD Main Gear Bungees --> Zenith-List message posted by: Larry McFarland Jeff, If you want to keep the bolt heads outside, (my preference) you might consider making an 3/16 inch thick bar with threaded holes and place thin radial lock washers outside. Fussy work to be sure, but the bungees would not be affected and once a bolt was in place, the rest would be easier to do. Originally, I had to make a special socket and welded handle with goop to hold onto the individual nylock nuts. Not fun, but it worked! You may need to lay a straight edge along the length of the parts to check for straighness. Also disconnect the input rod and operate the tab by hand. See what you find. Larry, With several replies to my post in mind, I decided to move the bolt heads inside (backwards) to make more room for the bungee cords. This allows the nuts to be inspected during preflight. And it is a bit easier to install without making a strip. I ended up making a special tool too. I used some left over tubing from making the compression tool, similar to the one in your picture, and attached a box end wrench on one side and an open end wrench on the other. The tubing created a very long extension that could reach down into the gear box to the nuts. Then I could hold the bolt head from the top of the gear box and turn the nuts on the outside with a second wrench. This is, of course, incorrect technique, but with only 20 inch pounds torque required, shouldn't be a problem. When I have to change the bungees, I'll have to remove the top skin again too. I suspect that will be some time pretty far into the future from the comments I have heard! I have just attached my rear spar to the back of the rear ribs and it is clear that it is not straight. That is, the ribs are not all the perfect length so the spar is "bowed in" in the middle. I haven't talked with the factory yet, but has anyone else experienced something similar and what did you do? It is quite obvious when sighting down the spar - probably close to a centimeter in the middle - maybe only half that - tough to tell. (I did check and make sure I had put on the right spars in the right places - they are all shorter than the last one so i think I have it right.) Any help would be appreciated. The photo should have my Grandson Jake in it. I saw him this evening and he begged to go flying again. Thanks for the complement on the bird. I couldn't get up this weekend because of the weather and I'm itching to fly. I may skip some work this week if it gets to VFR. Hope your well and maybe I can get over your way this summer, best regards, Bill
