Most effective is one blade propeller. More blades You have more quite
propeller will be itself, and also engine will have to work on lower RPM.

Now that you talked propellers, There is a limit in size & weight (mass?),

I am curious what might be advantages/disadvantages using a 2, 3 or 4-blade

advantage on a 701 during take-off etc.?

Subject: | upper fuse doubler fit |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: john butterfield <jdbutterfield@yahoo.com>
hi list
i am installing the upper fuse longeron doublers and
am having trouble with the fit. When put on, at the
shoulder position the longerons extend about 1/2 inch
outboard of the doubler. I can force them together
with a large amouont of force, but am uncomfortable
with this. It appears that the bend in the longeron
is to far forward and continues into part of the area
that is supposed to be straight. I have already
rivited the gear channels and uprights to the skin(is
there any other reason to wait to rivit) so to adjust
at that point requires removal of all of the rivits.
my questions
1. is a large amouont of outward tension from the
side skins bad for the aircraft.
2. does having the excess longeron showing make
fitting the canopy difficult (not withstanding the
embarrment of seeing you guys in person in the future
and having my error on perpetual display)
3. Zenith suggested that i make a new doubler with a
wider side to cover the longeron. this would be ok as
the cockpit at the shoulder level would be a little
wider.
The measurment at the seat back is correct (width).
what are your opinions as to the bulge. I kinda like
the wider version if it is not unsafe or make the
canopy impossible to properly install
thanks in advance

Subject: | Fuel System on 6K2 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jeff Davidson" <jeffrey_davidson@earthlink.net>
Listers,
Two questions if I may:
I am installing a fuel system very similar to that on page 6K2 of the 601 XL
plans. I have the Leading Edge fuel tank option for my 601 HD. I'm not
using a header tank. I have purchased the A10580-T gascolator and Andair 3
Way Fuel Selector value from ZAC. I have made and installed a Center
Console similar to 6K2-2. The gascolator uses an elbow (F139-4B) and a
straight barb coupler (F125-4B). My question is what combination of
fittings to use on the Selector value? The inlet for the left tank is on
the top of the value. The fuel line is approaching from below. It seems
that the line will have to make a "U turn". Does the XL kit include these
fittings? What have others used?
On the gascolator, a fairly large hole is required on the center line of the
fuselage. How are builders handling the retainer wire that wraps around the
gascolator bowl? And lastly, should the hole around the gascolator be
sealed or not? If so, with silicone?
Thanks for any responses.

Another option you might want to consider is if you
want the standard hingless aileron or the piano
hinged option. I believe the hingless design is
furnished if not otherwise specified happy building.

I spoke with Pete Krotje a Jabiru USA rep a couple of weeks ago. He
said that they are working on a fiberglass cowling that will work
with both the 2200 and 3300. He said it should be available in late
March early April.

Subject: | Re: Corrosion Prevention: Alodine and Zinc Chromate |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Dan Morehouse <messydeer@yahoo.com>
Thanks, Keith. I thought I replied earlier, but I think it got bounced.
I've spent some time emailing and talking with people on the phone. Matt Clark
of Henkel, makers of Alodine, talked with me for a good 15 minutes. Here's what
he had to say:
The corrosion that occurred in my stacked sheets of 6061 left outside in the
rain will continue to occur, even though they are now dry and sitting indoors.
He suggested cleaning them with Alumiprep and then immediately treating with
Alodine. I asked if I couldn't just clean w/ Alumiprep and not Alodine. Then use
Alumiprep again and then Alodine right after making the part. Sounded good
to me.
But he said corrosion would still occur, even after cleaning off the old corrosion.
He mentioned mills put an anticorrosive finish on, which has now been degraded.
That still sounds like overkill to me. What do you say?
I also called Vic at MacDermid, makers of Iridite, which is a conversion coating
similar to Alodine. He didn't think corrosion would continue after cleaning/etching,
but was only going on personal experience.
I hate to go through all the trouble of Alodining all 20 sheets, especially all
at once. So I am thinking of a middle of the road approach: clean them all
up now with Alumiprep then check every few months for corrosion.
I also had one person ask why not anodize. I've never heard anybody doing that
in small airplane construction. I did a quick search and found one type (sulfuric?)
weakens the aluminum substantially, while chromium doesn't do so near
as much. I also would guess it's expensive?
Take care,
Dan

Sounds like the position when the AC is parked, with the stick secured in the
full back position. Perhaps secured back with the seat belt? Perhaps loosens
a little, then works in the wind?
We could be doing the damage ourselves.
Is there another, better, way to secure the elevator?

Jeff, I built an XL with wing tanks and no header. I have duel controls so
the standard twin fuel valves between your ankles would not work. I installed a
console and a three way valve on the floor to the right front of the
gasalator. I sent photos of the system to the 601.org web site and they were still
on
it a couple months ago. The system has worked well for me and I have over 50
hours on it. I am not sure how the plumbing goes on an HD/HDS so it might not
work out. I sealed my gasalator with silicone after I flew the plane a while so
I could detect any leaks. The safety wire was not a problem. I then made a
stream line cover for the gasolator where only the drain nipple is exposed. Looks
pretty good. Best regards, Bill N505WP 601XL-3300w/dc
