Good morning all!
This morning, I was relaxing in my bed with my laptop
with the intention of looking at some builders' web
sites.... well, I stopped on my first site looking at
the flying log book of Bruce Brokius. WOW!!! Bruce
really has nice places to fly to. I suggest anyone in
need of inpiration and motivation to go there.

TAF says I could have a good time for flying a little
later... guess what I am preparing to do ;-)

Man I tell you I am snake bit. I got a lemon with my hog engine, it's going
back to the factory. The engine is going to be replaced, not fixed. Ran
fine until I put a prop on it. Then it started running really bad, low oil
pressure, started running hot, dieseled, blowing soot, running rich and so
on. Acted like the timing jumped, but I think the oil pressure was so low
it wouldn't keep the lifters pumped up. I think someone at the "American"
factory left out the "O" ring in the oil pump. It never had good oil
pressure from the get-go. According to the service manual it should have
between 30 and 38 psi, it never had over 22 psi at high RPM and idles at 3
psi. The oil in the oil tank will drain into the crankcase in 24 hours. I
know some oil will pass thru the pump over a period of time, that is normal,
but it's about a tea cup in 6 months. Hog-Air is really being good helping
me with this, certainly isn't their fault. Brett is doing everything he can
to make it right. Just my luck to get one put together by a drunk with a
hangover on Monday morning or someone wanting to get drunk on a Friday
afternoon.
This has really screwed up my plans to fly it to Sun N' Fun. By the time I
get my new engine, get the plane inspected and fly the 40 off, Sun N' Fun
will be over. So I guess me and my Dodge will go. See you guys there.

Jeff, I...... I sealed my gasalator with silicone after I flew the plane a
while so I could detect any leaks. The safety wire was not a problem. I then
made a stream line cover for the gasolator where only the drain nipple is
exposed. Looks pretty good. Best regards,
Bill N505WP 601XL-3300w/dc
Bill,
Thanks for your response. Actually I have envisioned my panel being
very similar to a picture of a cockpit with the dual controls, Andair value
on a center console, and Dynon instruments from the ZAC web site. I suspect
that ZAC has an answer to how they suggest it be plumbed so I'll be calling
them next week. I traded emails, but didn't get my question across very
well so I got an answer to a different question!
I looked on the ch601 website, but didn't see your photos. Your
system is a lot different anyway with the selector valve on the floor as
opposed to on the console between the spar and the instrument panel.

I work for GM in their Prototype Manfacturing Facility Press Room. We get sheet
metal in the flat on skids with a cover sheet on top and bottom. Our guys don't
use any material with rust (oxidation) when they make the stampings, the
cover sheets are often thrown out. It will provide incorrect test results when
we crash test or endurance test the structure.
If it was me, I would replace the the oxidized metal and call it a learning experience.
You might have some areas of the sheets that can be used, if no oxidation
is present. Keep it clean and dry in a rack like this below:
Here is a link with a little more explanation of the rack.

Jeff,
I have the four-way Andair on the centre console. I'm using 3/8 3003
aluminium and fittings. Two things I did for a better installation:
1. Turn the selector upside down and have Andair make a custom engraved
label plate. Cost is reasonable. I ordered and paid for mine at Oshkosh and
they shipped shortly afterwards. I think it was $20.
2. I replaced the standard Andair fittings with banjo fittings on the top
two inlet ports and fitted 45 degree AN elbows on the lower two ports.
I will send you photos off-list. Maybe you can get some ideas from them.
My gascolator is on the lower firewall on the engine side. If you have your
selector on the centre console there is no need to put the gascolator on the
floor of the cockpit. It only needs to be the lowest point between the
selector and the carburetor.

I'm not using a header tank. I have purchased the A10580-T gascolator
and Andair 3 Way Fuel Selector value from ZAC. I have made and
installed a Center Console similar to 6K2-2. The gascolator uses an
elbow (F139-4B) and a straight barb coupler (F125-4B). My question
is what combination of fittings to use on the Selector value? The inlet
for the left tank is on the top of the value. The fuel line is
approaching
from below. It seems that the line will have to make a "U turn". Does
the XL kit include these fittings? What have others used?
On the gascolator, a fairly large hole is required on the center line
of the fuselage. How are builders handling the retainer wire that wraps
around the gascolator bowl? And lastly, should the hole around the
gascolator be sealed or not? If so, with silicone?

"Turn the selector upside down and have Andair make a custom engraved

Neil,
What a great idea! Rotating the selector value 180 degrees makes it a
lot easier to arrange the fittings. $20 for a new label plate sounds like a
deal to me at this point. Anybody mess up their standard label plate and
need a new one? Since I'm only dealing with 2 tanks, I think that does it.
After spending some time with it, I agree that putting the gascolator on
the floor below the selector value is an awkward configuration. The engine
side of the firewall is the common location. It certainly is easier to
reach during pre-flight there and it gets it out of the cockpit.
Thanks.

Larry,
Sorry to hear about your engine woes. At least they are willing to replace it
and start again. I have been seriously thinking about the Pegasus wing now
that I am flying my 701 with the Zenith wing. I am used to flying a Piper Arrow
4 and I am not used to these slow speeds. Not to say that I can't get used to
it but I was wondering if there is anyone else out there flying with the
Pegasus wing and how much different the performance is. Also I noticed that you
said they are not producing the wing right now. Do you know the reason why and
if
they will start up again? I won't make it to Sun n Fun this year, leaving for
Ghana for 9 weeks.

Hello Bob,
You are right, the 701 is not a fast airplane (mine 90 mph cruise @ 5100 rpm)
but is not intended as a fast airplane, in fact I think neither the 601XL...
If you fly in areas like Texas (Only as an example because I have experience
drivng there as a turist), where is level and there are lots of long landing
strips all around, you will get bored flying it... I think is why I enjoy
a lot my 701 here.
Also the 601XL,... Not that is a slow airplane, but is slower in cruise that
others in type, but what I have learned in this last years in this list and about
the ZAC airplanes, is that the design goals of Mr Heintz are more towards
other areas than only speed,
For example: easy construction, landing gear stronger than other airplanes for
grass (or worse) strips, and safer slow landing speeds (more forgiving could
be a better word?), remember, most of us are 30 to 50 hrs a year weekend pilots,
Some other planes need more practice and learning so the pilots can handle
them, if not they fly it with fear, instead of enjoy.
What I have learned about my 701 is that I always enjoy flying it, even in severe
turbulence (here we have some good examples :-), the 701 never had feeled
short of controls, Not my words, but from our very experienced bush pilot
and instructor here.
You need to get used to it, or maybe your type of flying is more for a fast
glass one....
In one vacation family trip, I meet a pilot (Mr. White) near Houston, that has
lots of hours (more than 5,000 if I remember correct) in Aeronca Champs (near
the same cruise speed as the 701) and has gone to OSH and S&F several times...
He is well know in the Aeronca Club and you can feel his happiness with
this airplanes, I was just beguining to build my 701 at the time, if not I
would looked for a restored Aeronca, just hearing him talk...
Sorry all for the long post, But I am realy happy with my 701.
Saludos
Gary Gower.

Thanks for the post. I am not unhappy with the flight characteristics of the
701 (although I'm not so sure yet in turbulence and am just getting used to
the attitudes in takeoff and landing) I was just wondering about a faster wing
without much of a trade off of STOL.
