Scott, those can be sourced from Spaenaur in Kitchener Ontario (it's
where I got mine after looking all over the place including McMaster)
http://www.spaenaur.com/contact.asp
The part number is 099-324 and 099-325 (right and left sides)
Catalog page is here : http://www.spaenaur.com/view_pdf.asp?Page=L70
If I remember correctly I cut off the latch and welded a new once in
the correct position

Beautiful bird, Larry! Where is the air inlet for the air cooled engine? Looks
like the inlets are filled with landing lights.

I started off with 1/4" opening around the landing lites, plan to open them
as needed, if needed. Brett tells me he had a hard time keeping his engine
warn enough. I may also open my hog nose if needed. Thanks for asking,
Larry, www.skyhawg.com.
P.S. Cowling wasn't on when it ran hot, plus I had a high speed fan blowing
40 degree air on it.

Hopefully Raymond Miller, the new owner, will be in production this summer.
Watch my site, as soon as he gets it going, I will post it. Plus I will be

*Scott,
I purchased my latches from Zenith, but they can be possibly purchased
from the company below.
Also, if you're going to use the same latches, welded to the frame, you
want to be cautious about welding in proximity to springs in the mechanism.
I welded short segments and used a hose to dampen and protect the springs.

Larry, Al, Trevor, Brandon, Neil and others:
Thanks for all the replies on and off-list about the
latches. I ordered them directly from Spaenaur and it
was $50 for both sides and a few extra strikers ($50US
was their minimum order). ZAC wants $370 for the pair
of assemblies.
Also, thanks for the lively discussion last week (or
the week before) on towbar attachments. I made one
last weekend with my little mill/lathe. It was a fun
project and I think it will work well. It gave me
something to do while my crankshaft is away.

I believe it's the same cowl as for the Rotax with a couple of bumps for
the exhaust pipe elbows.
If you have the satndard cowl you should be able to make it fit
Mine fitted very poorly incidently, but no worse than anyone elses.
Frank.

I'm not sure about the 701's elevator, but the elevator stop on my 601 is
attached to the rudder fairing and is set for full deflection of the
elevator without allowing the horn and gusset to ever contact each other.
Is the 701 different?

Ralph,
There are two or more types of cowl that fit Subaru depending on the
engine supplier/redrive
etc. NSI has one as does Zenith for the Stratus, but they're a bit
different in the way they're
fitted out. Which do you have?

Subject: | Re: Corrosion Prevention: Alodine and Zinc Chromate |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Dan Morehouse <messydeer@yahoo.com>
About my corrosion problem...
I spoke with Sheldon Dean of Dean Corrosion Technology. He is also the editor
of the Journal of ASTM International. Heres what the Journal says about him:
Leading the Editorial process of the Journal is Sheldon W. Dean, Jr., Sc.D.,
President of Dean Corrosion Technology, Inc. and formerly of Air Products and
Chemicals, Inc. Dr. Dean has gained worldwide recognition for his outstanding
contributions in corrosion testing, standardization and leadership in the voluntary
standards system within both ASTM and the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO). Dr. Dean has been an ASTM member since 1965. He has authored
more than 95 publications, is primary author of six standards, and has
assisted with 20 others. He has also edited seven books. A large number of these
standards and publications are used throughout the world in materials and corrosion
technology.
This is a water stain, a type of corrosion. It starts out blackish then over
time it turns white. This is aluminum hydroxide, which forms instead of the oxide.
A protective layer of aluminum oxide is formed from the oxygen in the air.
The hydroxide is formed when it is exposed to water.
Once the corrosion is removed, a feint stain pattern might remain or recur at
a later time. This could be easily removed by polishing. The surface could be
primed and painted, in which case there would be no further evidence of the corrosion.
There are no damaging physical or chemical changes made by a superficial
layer of this corrosion. If the stained sheets are dry now and remain so,
there will be no further corrosion even when stored this way for a few years.
Acid etching also does not promote corrosion. The protective oxide layer will
form. Aluminum may be acid etched and stored dry without a conversion coating.
There is no benefit to applying a conversion coating when the sheets will remain
dry afterwards.
Removing the stain/corrosion could be done with an acid etch and scotchbrite,
or possibly with scotchbrite alone. The latter method would not require eye and
skin protection needed with the acid etch method.
I also spoke with David Burleigh, Ph.D. (from MIT) of the Materials and Metallurgical
Engineering department at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.
He agreed with Dr. Dean, but added a couple items:
1. Corrosion could continue if there were road salts deposited on the aluminum
2. The sheets should be inspected for signs of pitting: pimples of powder above
the surface.
I think now Ill inspect the corrosion to make sure there is no pitting. At that
time I could try removing the corrosion with scotchbrite alone. Most sheets
have the stain on one side only. Ill mark this side so I can avoid the potential
of recurring stain on the exterior.
I give thanks to Dr. George Totten, author of the Handbook of Aluminum and past
president of the International Federation of Heat Treating and SurfaceEngineering
(IFHTSE). Dr. Totten referred me to Drs. Dean and Burleigh.
Take care,
Dan

Hello, Dan
Thanks for the informative posting.
I have removed light corrosion marks and scratches with scotchbrite myself.
Just one word of advice: you might not need hands and eyes protection, but I suggest
some sort of
dust mask, specially if you are going to use scotchbrite on a power tool.
A thin, green dust (or whatever color you are using) will be created and get into
your airways -
it can't be good. I learned about it when I blew my nose after a session of "scotchbriting"...
Cheers

Scott, the way I made a tow bar attachement was to drill holes in the ends of the
front axel and thread them. Then I used a 10 mm barrel insert and bolted it
on each end and redrilled the carter pin hole. Works great, looks good. Best

Subject: | 601XL - aux wing fuel pump |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Martin Pohl" <mpohl@pohltec.ch>
Hello everybody
My XL has 4 x 12USG wing tanks and a 5-way-Andair selector valve.
Zenith's standard fuel supply setup is - as you all know - one aux fuel pump behind
the fuel selector valve/gascolator. The aux fuel pump needs to "suck" the
fuel over a rather long way from each tank through the selector valve and the
gascolator. I am somehow concerned that it is more likely with this setup that
vapor lock occurs, especially during takeoff (engine at full power).
I don't want to install 4 aux fuel pumps at each wing fuel tank outlet. But what
do you think about this idea:
* 1 aux fuel pump at the firewall (after the gascolator, standard setup, ok for
cruise flight phase)
* 1 elec fuel pump at the left inner tank, switched on for takeoff and landings,
takeoff and landings are made with fuel from the left inner tank.
This would mean that during critical flight phases with high power settings, the
fuel is additionally pressurized right from the wing tank by the wing tank pump.
In case I forget to switch on the wing tank pump and/or forget to select the left
inner wing fuel tank, the setup is still Zenith-standard (1 aux fuel pump at
the firewall, 1 engine driven fuel pump).
What is your opinion? I am not a fuel system expert - looking forward to reading
your answers!!!
Cheers Martin

The 3M MSDS sheet for product P/N 7447+ shows that it uses an aluminum oxide
abrasive so it should be correct for use on aluminum. I guess you can't tell
what abrasive is used in the product by its color.

Hi Rick, Glad to see you over here too.
Looking at the drawings it appears there is no "real" up elevator stop on the
CH-701. Down elevator is limited by the contact of the lower elevator horn
against the rear of the fuselage, as noted in the drawings to "later: file to
adjust elevator stop" (Dwg. 7H5). No mention of up elevator stop.

We finally have our shop and tools ready, so we can start building.
I have a question regarding rudder construction. In the workshop, the
vertical tail horn, fairing, and the upper bearing are not installed. I
know that we are supposed to wait to install the upper bearing until we
install the rudder on the fuselage, to get the proper positioning. How
about the tail horn and fairing - do we need to wait on those also, or can
they be installed now?
Also, I noticed that plans page 6-T-5 shows a fiberglass rudder fairing for
the top of the rudder, (my plans page is dated 02/05). Is this an optional
item, or should we have gotten a fiberglass fairing instead of the aluminum
tip rib when we built our rudder at the Aug. '05 workshop? Our kit did not
include this fairing, and it was not shown in the packing list.
Thanks in advance,

Dave,
I started with my XL rudder about this time last year. I did not recieve
the fiberglass upper rudder fairing either, when I called ZAC about it they
told me it was completly optional. I left the aluminum tip rib in place.
I have not attached the bottom rudder fairing or the upper bearing as of yet
either, (I plan to wait till it is mounted on the fuse.) I did go ahead and
attach the rudder horn though.
Dont forget to leave a no rivet zone for your lower fairing untill it is
mounted!!
good luck

I'd like to add the optional wing tiedown rings before riveting the nose ribs on
my wings but cringe at the price ZAC will want for the material.
Does anyone have some 0.125" 6061-T6 scrap lying around they're willing to part
with?
The raw material needs to be 40mm x 135mm for each piece (2 needed) or slightly
larger.
I will reimburse shipping...
Email off list if you can help.
