Hi Bill,
I'm like you-- as long as it's accurate in the "bread and butter" zone,
I guess I can live with it. Sure good to see your beautiful plane at
the flyin. I posted our flyin story in the NavCom EAA 690 newsletter.
Looked good to see all the 601s.
Take care and I am sure we will see you somewhere soon. FWIW it's a
lot less hassle flying into WDR and eating at the Spitfire Grill if we
get a chance. I keep tiinking of flying to T/U airport soon, but doesn't
look like a lot to see or do unless you are Jim are there.

Reminder, For all of you attending Sun-N-Fun Please come out to the 2nd
Annual Webmasters BBQ for owners and Builders of Zenith Aircraft. This
years event is being held on Thursday April 6th once again in the
campgrounds. Last years event saw a total of 125 people, hopefully this
year we will have as good or better showing. There is no sign up sheet
this year or name tags but to get an Idea I would like everyone planning
to attend to send me an E-Mail. At moderator@ch601.org or
moderator@ch701.com or hit reply and add a "do not archive" This way I
can purchase dogs and burgers accordingly Presently I have 40 people
signed up, but we about 2/3rds short from last years event. There is no
cost as it is coming out of my pocket and from Donations. Last year we
had donations of food and somebody brought a great flat of Strawberries,
I'm glad to report that Jabiru USA has once again generously donated to
our event. Rick Roberts has once again signed up his guys to handle the
Grills. The BBQ starts at 5 pm just after the show and runs till 8pm
when the trolleys stop running. The location will be posted in the
Zenith booth or just ask any member of the Zenith team. Builders, Owners
or dreaming of a Zenith are all welcome.
Remember this is your time to spend with others doing the same thing you
are, also The whole Zenith Crew will be present just for you. There are
no speeches just a great time sharing stories!!! Please send us an
E-Mail we really don't want to run out of food or have to run out
Thursday afternoon for more supplies just before the event. I look
forward to meeting everyone.

I used a spray bottle, and sprayed the parts evenly.
Trying to dip parts proved much too difficult due to
not only size, but shape. In the Navy, we used
cheesecloth (thread count of about 15) to keep odd
shaped surfaces wet with alodine.

Hi Jim,
I have two EI instruments in my panel that work well, their digital
tach (RPM "R-1"), and their "smart engine analyzer" (SR-8A). Both are
now a bit older technology, and I had a lot of trouble getting EI to
supply me with the correct CHT spark plug lead for the Jabiru, but now
that they're up and running, I'm very happy with them. Both instruments
are small and very lightweight, and deliver accurate and dependable
information in a easily readable format. Not cheap, though. EI has
since come out with much more elaborate glass panel-type whole-engine
analyzers, but if I were to do it over now, I'd have a very close look
at the new Dynon unit first, which I think is considerably cheaper. I
also have the Dynon EFIS-D10 (original model), and absolutely love it.

Builders,
Seems to me that using 6061-T6 would not require Zinc-Chromate, or ? with it's
built in corrosion resistance. Any opinions...? I live in the desert, not near
salt-water... maybe visit the ocean occasionally, but plane won't sit there...
and no floats planned...

Mike, I am using SEM Self Etching Primer, purchased at an automotive paint
store, in a rattle can. I only use it on mating surfaces - little masking -
just spray it on. According to ZAC, priming everything is not really necessary
and only adds weight. Total priming really looks cool, though, and I suspect
that is the real reason folks use it. Remember, if you are adding things to an
airplane, the most important thing to add is lightness.

This question may be more for Matt than others but your input still might be
helpful.
Is there or has there ever been any thought of a "swap & sell / For sale"
type list on the Matronics system? I have wished for it more than once for
both selling and buying. I know someone out there has something I want to
buy and vice versa.

Guys (& girls?),
As simple question that probably won't result in extensive
debate. On the inboard end of the flaps, the nylon control plate 6W1-3-1,
attached to the first rib, is shown in drawing 6-W-1 as slotted horizontally
in the center and attached with the long side parallel to the top side of
the flap. All photos in the construction guide show it mounted vertically with
a center hole without a slot. The drawings make more sense to me from an operational
standpoint. Which is correct?

Mike,
It's still a good idea to put a light coat of Zinc-Chromate between
surfaces that are riveted together
and on bottom surfaces that might collect moisture.
The air, moisture or rain that would collect in these areas might just
be contaminated enough to cause
you some corrosion. It doesn't require much effort and so long as you
use a 3M-6001 respirator or
equal, you'll do no harm to yourself or anyone else. The person you
sell your plane to might just live where
corrosion is a factor in his environment.

Lynn--
The original design was for a hole to be drilled in the plastic, however,
a number
of builders have had some difficulty aligning the hole with the flap pin.
The fix for
the potential misalignment was to elongate the hole into a slot. Either one
is fine
to use depending on your final assembly and alignment

Solved the problem. I was able to disassemble the casing and found that
there is a spring-loaded cog that engages another cog to turn the compass
card. This allows engaging the two cogs without stripping any gears. The
spring needed some lubrication so it would apply the correct pressure.
All my snags should be so easy to fix.

I must be about as far along as you. I noticed the same discrepancy. I have
read in ZAC info. to always follow the plans in case of discrepancies, so I
went with the horizontal alignment as on the drawings. I drilled a #40 hole in
the center of the nylon pad and at the proper location on the rib. I clecoed
them together and drilled and riveted the pad to the rib. I countersunk the
rivets and set them flush. Then I drilled two .25" holes, at the extremities
of the slot and opened the slot with a Dremel.

These instruments are private-banded products actually built by MGL
Avionics: www.mglavionics.co.za/ (in South Africa of all places).
At least one direct distributor of the MGL product is Sport Flying Shop:
www.sportflyingshop.com/
I purchased my Stratomaster from Sport Flying Shop and received good
service. I'm planning to upgrade to the latest Stratomaster because it has
dual fuel level inputs (good for a dual-tank plane like the XL).
I don't know of anything on the MGL instruments that wouldn't work with a
Jabiru. Everything is highly configurable. The Jabiru site does show that
you have to do a little work on the heads' cooling fins to get *anybodies*
thermocouple under a spark plug.
If you have any questions e-mail MGL. Generally you receive a quick response
from Rainer (who I think is the head of the company).
Based on this blurb about the E1 I suspect it will work with almost any
engine:
"The E1 universal engine monitor combines in one compact 3.5" format
instrument all that is
needed to monitor most smaller aircraft engines from two-stroke ultralight
engines to medium
sized four strokes such as from Rotax, Continental and Lycoming.
Also most automotive engine conversions can benefit from the use of the E1
engine monitor."
If you don't already have it you can download the manual from MGL's site.
I'm am trying to find out if either MGL or Sport Flying Shop will be at
Sun-N-Fun.

Matt,
Aveo is just a fancy website, with webmasters
that don't answer e-mail. They are all actually
Stratomaster instruments. Go to:
http://sportflyingshop.com
These instruments are imported from S. Africa.
Matt, the rep at sportflyingshop is from S. Africa,
and went back a couple of months ago for training. He
is a good guy, and I would buy these instruments from
nobody else. He answers e-mails on the same day, and
actually answers the phone. Besides, the last time I
checked, he was cheaper than Aveo.

Hi Dan:
You might want to consider one of the latest coatings that can
be brushed or sprayed onto surfaces, the Zenith web site mentions a couple of
products. Chromate chemicals are not very friendly to the environment either.

Thanks, guys :-)
I'm pretty much sold on zinc chromate. I am aware of and prepared for its hazards.
It comes in $5 spray cans and has been proven over time. Cortec is too expensive
and too hard for me to apply as a spray. I don't have any spray equipment,
unless my mustache grows too long.
And thanks for the cheese cloth idea!
