Late decision to attend 06 Sun 'N Fun, and excited about it!
I couldn't locate the info in the Archive, so please advise how to
make 2 reservations for the Zenith team barbecue.

Jon, Mark and David (and all);
I just received and reviewed your latest "project." You guys are to be commended
for this production.
The real world home shop presentation and construction atmosphere are perfect,
and you've succeeded admirably in conveying the targeted knowledge. This project
will continue to provide invaluable insight and techniques that will assist
builders from any aviation community for years to come.
IMHO, Zenith should include this DVD 2-disc set with every set of plans sold to
scratch builders (It took me countless hours, and more 6061-T6 and wood for forms
then you could imagine, to produce ribs that I was eventually happy with.
I must say, my early attempts were never as scary as the sample shown at the
end of the video!).
My advice for all future scratch-builders: Order this DVD set before you order
the plans. You won't be disappointed!

Greetings Lister's,
The word experimental in our aircraft truly means that our aircraft was not built
under the certification process of the FAA. I doesn't necessarily that we
should experiment with short cuts in finishes, hardware or design. We are building
aircraft that are not of our own creation but that of Zenith. The FAA has
set up acceptable methods and practices that should be adhered to. If you
take apart a Cessna 150, Grumman AA-5, F-15 Strike Fighter you will find that
they all use Zinc Chromate to prevent corrosion within any environment the aircraft
would find itself in. When it comes to the hardware, AN or MS hardware
meets the standards for which are needed to insure safety over the life of the
aircraft. Using inferior hardware puts not just your life at stake but anyone
who rides with you. If you sell the aircraft, the risk passes to the new owner.
My advise is to stay within the standards established by the AC 43.13 standards
as they exist. Do not deviate from the bench mark. I only hope that this doesn't
cause a flaming battle, as an A&P, it's just my opinion. Build and fly
safe.

OK hopefully I can get this straight in my head once and for all. I
have a 601HDS that I am conviced stalls at below 51mph.
Can I sell it to a sport pilot or not, even though the model description
is HDS??
What proof do I need to provide that it does stall below 51mph...Stall
is listed in the logbook as 50mph.

Hi Frank,
Here is the actual definition of a light sport airplane. I guess it
is up to you and your plane's buyer (and insurance agent) to decide
whether or not your plane qualifies as a light-sport airplane.
[Light-sport aircraft means an aircraft, other than a helicopter or
powered-lift that, since its original certification, has continued to
meet the following:
(1) A maximum takeoff weight of not more than--
(i) 660 pounds (300 kilograms) for lighter-than-air aircraft;
(ii) 1,320 pounds (600 kilograms) for aircraft not intended for
operation on water; or
(iii) 1,430 pounds (650 kilograms) for an aircraft intended for
operation on water.
(2) A maximum airspeed in level flight with maximum continuous power
(VH) of not more than 120 knots CAS under standard atmospheric
conditions at sea level.
(3) A maximum never-exceed speed (VNE) of not more than 120 knots CAS
for a glider.
(4) A maximum stalling speed or minimum steady flight speed without
the use of lift-enhancing devices (VS1) of not more than 45 knots CAS
at the aircraft's maximum certificated takeoff weight and most
critical center of gravity.
(5) A maximum seating capacity of no more than two persons, including
the pilot.
(6) A single, reciprocating engine, if powered.
(7) A fixed or ground-adjustable propeller if a powered aircraft
other than a powered glider.
(8) A fixed or autofeathering propeller system if a powered glider.
(9) A fixed-pitch, semi-rigid, teetering, two-blade rotor system, if
a gyroplane.
(10) A nonpressurized cabin, if equipped with a cabin.
(11) Fixed landing gear, except for an aircraft intended for
operation on water or a glider.
(12) Fixed or repositionable landing gear, or a hull, for an aircraft
intended for operation on water.
(13) Fixed or retractable landing gear for a glider. ]

Is that indicated airspeed or calibrated airspeed? The rule states a maximum
stall speed of 45 knots (51.8mph) calibrated airspeed (CAS) at its maximum
takeoff weight. Since in nearly all aircraft the ASI reads way low at near
stall speeds, 50 mph IAS in your plane will almost certainly be much higher
than 50 mph CAS. If you documented an actual stall speed at max gross weight
of less than 51.8 mph CAS in your aircraft log during your phase I testing,
then your plane meets this part of the requirement.

Frank-- I would say, unfortunately the HDS does not
qualify. The Zenith web site shows the 601 HDS has a
gross weight of 1200 lbs.
It shows the stall speed of 54 mph at 1,050 lbs.

Hate to say it, but I believe trying to make your 601HDS fit into the Sport
Airplane category is like trying to fit a 2.001x2.001x2.001 cold steel block
into a cold 2.0x2.0x2.0 ID steel box - just will not happen unless you can
officially shave the size of the block to fit the box. Close, but no cigar!

I think you'll not be able to sell it as a Light Sport Aircraft,
having been registered as an Experimental,
but you'll be able to sell it to a person with the new Light Sport
Aircraft pilot's license and they can fly it
same as any T-Craft or Cub because it does, in fact, stall at 50 or less.
I've found that my plane will stall at under 50 as well and am
considering dumping out from the Private
to the drivers license medical. I'm fine, but everything is an
inevitablity these days.

I have it proped with a Warp Drive, 2 blade, 64", set to 9 degrees pitch.
I'm getting @ 104MPH at 2800RPM.
In would like to get performance info from anyone flying the same setup
regardless of type and size prop.
Also would appreciate any suggestions for performance improvement.

Why buck the FAA! The FAA says a 601 qualifies as eligible to fly with a
light sport license. Everyone else just gives their spin on the rules. The
FAA does not say HD, HDS, XL it just says Zenith 601 period!

Hi Guys,
Well I'm probably behind many of you, but I just found the neatest
free download from GoogleEarth.com. This package enables you to
search the world for interesting stuff from satellite photos and it contains
a database of all streets, highways and buildings for all small or large
cities like Chicago.
If you use the destination-planner and enter the From "city, state and USA"
and the To address, "city, state and USA" you get directions
much the same as MapQuest, but if you push the tour button, the program
will
take you through the trip as if you were in a helicopter at 200-feet up
and dip
low so you can see each turn, change of highway designation etc.
It has good images nearly all around and if you wait just a
moment, the detail gets really serious. Moline, IL Airport is so good you
can see the cracks in the runways. Anyway, it's a great highway planner
for
something like Sun n Fun and the minor road names are shown all round
Lakeland airport right to the parking area.
This program will take you anywhere on the globe, even Bagdad or Mexico City
in fine detail. You can zoom to car parking areas or rotate the horizon
and fly over
the turf just above the cities or into the Grand Canyon. It's a blast
and it's free.
Didn't want anyone that hasn't seen this one to miss it.

Non-LSA Aircraft: Holders of a sport pilot certificate
may fly an aircraft with an existing airworthiness
certificate if it meets the definition of a
light-sport aircraft (such as weight and speeds). For
example, an amateur-built STOL CH 701 or ZODIAC XL
aircraft may be flown by a Sport Pilot since the
aircraft meet the definition
The above is off from the Zenith site.
It doesn't matter what you call a certain airplane.
It has to meet the guidelines.
Let's not "beat this one to death" tring to stretch
the rules. All Frank has to do is: load his airplane
to Goss placarded weight, take the potential buyer
with him, fly the airplane and see if it indeed will
not stall until 45kts.

Almost all, anyway ;-)
One more gotcha: the stall speed at gross has to be without the use
of "lift enhancing devices", ie flaps.
So, in summary, for your experimental to be eligible for Sport Pilot
certificate holders, it has to stall at less than 45 knots, at gross
weight (& worst cg), without using flaps.

RonB

I could be wrong, but I think that if the 701 is currently regististered in
you name with the FAA, you only need to give the new owner a bill of sale.
Who owned it previously isn't material as long as the N number has been
transferred to you or you got a new one. Best to check with the FAA.

Since the subject of CAS was brought up, I was wondering how to determine
this. I know you use true airspeed, density altitude, and temp. Is TAS the
same as the average groundspeed in 3 different directions with a GPS? My
601HD IAS is normally around 110 to 115 with GPS showing 98-104. So does
this mean my IAS is reading high so CAS would be actually lower?

This is just a continuation of my previous posts. As suggested I checked
for inductive couplings etc. No repositioning of the wiring made any
difference. It was time for the big guns, I carted my Techtronics 4
channel rack mount scope out to the plane, it might have handles but it
is not very portable. Anyway the normal wave form is a 10 msec step down
to about -10 volts followed by an upward step to + 20 volts for 5 msec
then back to 0. There is some ringing on both ends of the 20 volt step.
The problem appears to be rather high voltage (15-20 volt) high
frequency (5-10 microsec) noise that occurs above 3000 RPM usually in
the middle of the -10 volt step. Since there was a significant frequency
difference between the good and bad signal I constructed a filter, a 10K
resistor connected to one end of two 12 volt zener diodes back to back
with the other end to ground and a 0.2 uF capacitor across the the
diodes. Checked it out today and all tack operation is smooth.

Hello Larry,
Yes its lots of fun... We can see my VW van in two places at the same "time"!
:)
This because I estimate that our airstrip photo was taken one saturday about
4 years ago, The lake is very dry (the dryest season in years) and the big power
lines were going to be installed near the road in the back (we fighted them
and won!) The VW van is parked in the back of my hangar. Now our hangar is
double the size, over where the van is.

The photo of my house area had to be taken last year about August, I was repairing
my driveway at that time and my VW bus was parked on the street for about
a month.

Also Found Johann's house with his car parked outside...
Well, lets have fun with this great program.

Hi Guys,
Well I'm probably behind many of you, but I just found the neatest
free download from GoogleEarth.com.
