I have made wooden dies that allow you to put a slight edge bend on
circular pieces of
Aluminum. Its quite easy and requires little time and makes a factory
looking finished piece.
Trace out the finished piece of aluminum you want the bent edge applied
to...onto a piece of scrap wood.
Cut out the pattern a 1/8 smaller. Make two of them. I then place the
inspection cover as a sandwich (wood, aluminum wood) in a vice and roll
the edge with a piece of hard wood. I actually make my aluminum cover
place about a 1/16 inch larger in circumference then do this treatment
to the inspection plate.
I also have made squish dies with a router that you squeeze and put
edges on with. Route a female pattern into some scrap wood and make a
mail plug to press into the female mold. You can be sloppy with these
molds and get outstanding finished pieces form them
.......................................................................
.........
I've got a similar tool, but it doesn't work on curved parts like
inspection covers (which is the only place I really need it). Does
anyone know how to create that edge on inspection plate covers?

I know some folks in the past were looking for some decent large images of
801s for desktop wallpaper.
I just put a decent sized 801 image from a pic I shot at OSH '05 and cleaned
up with Photoshop on the Yahoo 801 Builders Group under the Photos section.

A little off topic, but my feet and lower back are
killing me after working all day standing on the

anti-fatigue floor mats? Home depot has them, a
little expensive, but worth it if they work. Thanks

Hi Rich,
I don't think your question is off topic at all.
I use a stool on wheels to sit while I do most of my work. I think I
bought the stool at Office Max or one of the similar stores. My back
is bad enough that standing for any length of time in the same place
always causes me discomfort while sitting is a lot easier. The
rolling stool rolls under my bench to get out of the way in my tight quarters.
I also use a one step step-stool (a one step ladder?) that I bought
for under 10 dollars at home depot to reach things that are higher or
farther from the edge of my bench than are easy to get.
Those two devices make working on my plane a lot easier for me.

I'm sure they'd be great... Over the past week my thoughts have been on
getting at least 2 of them for both sides of my table... Last week while
cleaning out my garage, I found an old excercise mat made of high density
foam... It was quite dirty and I thought of throwing it away, but decided
just to put it on the floor beside my table... It sure has made a difference
in the way my back and feet feel...

Subject: | worst landing of my life |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Jack Russell <clojan@sbcglobal.net>
Ok Ron: Here is the report. First let me say that 8830c is usable again! My airplane
partner, Steve, and I started out early this morning at Chandler-Fresno
and got the plane all ready to go. I did a couple of high speed taxi tests again
and everything was fine except no one could hear me on the radio. Back to
the hanger to find the problem and started taking off the top skin. 2 hours
later Steve found a loose connector and that seemed to be the problem. Around
noon I took "charlie" to the runway and decided that all was good to go. I decided
this was going to be the real thing and no crow hops. Nerves in check, I
applied full power and by the time I found the airspeed instrument again it was
at 60mph and back I pulled. I gotta tell you that quite a relief came over
me when the little plane started to go where I pointed. By now I was pretty sure
that I was not going to veer off to one side and crash. The climb out was fast!
No heavy left wing felt but really really
pitchy. My plan was to turn crosswind quickly and stay over the airport but by
the time I thought about it I was quite a ways out. Durning the climb my eis
warning light started flashing and I determined that the cause was CHT. The
limit was set to 375 and I was getting close to 400. On downwind I pulled the
power hoping to lower the temp . I had to get the plane on the ground fast! I
did not panic but I really didn't want to fry $15000 for lunch. My plan was to
be able to fly around the pattern several times and get a feel for the plane
before landing. Instead I was going to have to land after only a couple minutes
of flight. Everything was feeling right on base and final until I got over
the fence and I thought I got into turbulence but it got worse. I suspect that
I probably fell into some pilot induced oscillation but it was quite a rollie
pollie ride to the ground. I wanted to give it power and go around but I wasn't
sure that the jabiru would not cook it's heads.
I think the tail tie down finally stopped the oscillation because I did hear it
scrape and then mains planted firm. I have never scraped a tie down in thousands
of landings ,even in my student days, and I got to say that this was the
worst landing of my life. Of course, everybody in the restaurant had to be watching.
Steve told me later that he wasn't worried because he was laughing pretty
hard after watching it. He said it just looked like one of the student pilots
that fly tomahawks out of our airport. After inspection of the plane we found
no damage except for a small scrape on the bottom of the tie down. What a
strong little design Chris has made! How flimsy this thing was sitting on my
bench during construction but it has proven that it can take some abuse.
This next week we will be working on the cooling issue and I can't wait to fly
it again. This time the landing will be like a butterfly with sore feet! Jack
in Los Osos CA
P.s Steve and I would like to thank this list for all of the help that we received
over the last 3 years of building. I have been so busy lately that I haven't
had much time to answer questions of new builders but now it is time to
pay back what we have received. THANK YOU!!
P.s.s. I do have a video from the pilots view which I hope to get posted if I
can figure out how to do it.
