Hi all,
I've searched the archives and didn't find much info on this so far:
I plan on building my own spring gear for my 601XL. I already have the =
material (6061-T6) and a source for the bending of the material. I =
would like to gun drill the gear for my brake lines, which I have a =
source for as well...
I have never seen gun drilled gear in person and would like to know =
where the drill hole location is on/inside the gear. Does anyone have =
blueprint/plans of the locaton of these holes?
Thanks much,
Randy

Sam's carries some interlocking floor pads that seem to work pretty well. You
hook them together to fit the desired space and shape. $20 per pack.

Subject: | Magic Hole Cutting Fluid. |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Paul Mulwitz <p.mulwitz@worldnet.att.net>
I just discovered some really good cutting fluid for making smooth
holes in thick aluminum. It is called "Option 1" made by Relton
Corporation of Arcadia,CA. I found it at my local tool store, the
Tool Peddler, but I am sure there are other stores that carry this
stuff. A 4 ounce bottle was plenty to make the 6 holes I needed in
my wing spar and cost a few dollars.
After reading about the problems others have had and trying my skills
at dry drilling thick aluminum and also reaming those holes I
discovered I could not make nice smooth holes. My first approach was
to build a fixture to keep the reamer straight. That helped a
little, but still I had rough finish inside my 5/16 holes needed to
mate the XL wing spar to the center section.
I decided to try this fluid. Just a few drops on the cutting tool
(either drill or reamer) made a huge difference in the smoothness of
the hole. The drilled holes using the fluid were smoother than the
reamed ones done without the fluid. With the fluid, reamer, and
reaming fixture the holes are really nice.
The fixture I made for the hand reamer is just a piece of 1/2 inch
UHMW plastic held around 3 inches from the work piece with a little
sheet metal box. A hole drilled in the plastic and another in the
opposite side of the box allow the reamer to go into the target hole
and stay aligned. If anyone wants a picture just send me an email.

In my kit, both lamps for the Landing/Taxi light assembly are identical.
What makes one a landing light and the other a taxi light? Also, I am asuming
that one of the screw connections on the lamp is grounded and the other goes to
a switch in the panel. Since they also are identical, does it make a
difference which is which?

All-
Want to make sure before I cut metal. I'm laying out 6-V-11-1 top =
center wing skins for an HDS (might be the same for all the rest of the =
601s, for all I know) prior to clecoing.=20
Manual says "Keep aft edge clear of rear Z spar web or you'll have =
trouble when you strap the nose skin down". Print says leading edge of =
top skin is 25mm forward of rear of main spar web.=20
If I align per the print, all the pre-drilled holes miss the rib =
crimps, but I'll have to trim about 3/8" off the trailing edge of the =
skin. If I align the trailing edge of the skin flush with the Z spar, =
I'll have a hell of a mess as far as the pre-drilled hole spacing is =
concerned. Every one of the crimps will be directly under a hole.
My gut feeling is to hide the manual under a rock and go with the =
print. Anyone been there, done that? (Not hid the manual, had a long =
center wing top skin!!)

Hi Jay,
As I undersdtand it, the inboard lamp is shielded from shining directly
in front of the airplane by the inboard edge of the cutout, therefore it
illuminates an area farther out in front. That designates it as the "landing
light". The outboard lamp casts more of its light in front of the palne and
is designated the "taxi light". Do you plan to wire and switch them
separately or connect them both to one switch?
I believe that most builders use the airframe for the ground return as you
assumed and it does not matter which terminal goes to ground.
I'm about to start on the spar so I haven't done the lights yet.

Ed, Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense. I plan to switch the lights
separately, but I might find that using both is more effective. By the way, I
have located my lights one rib closer to the fuselage.

Randy, FWIW, my EAA technical advisor suggested the move, mainly to be able
to remove one of those "smiles" in the LE skin. He didn't think the location
was all that critical.

I think the idea was to place them as far from the cockpit as possible to
reduce the glare. The are out at the tip of the RV wing as well.

Re: Landing light placement. I think the light location was chosen to allow
for the long range tank installation. I have the two tanks per wing which
prevents moving them inward. So, I'm betting that if you have the single
inboard tanks, moving them inward is the most practical thing to do. It
would move the weight a wee bit closer to CG, eliminate a we bit of wire,
and probably make the lights a wee bit more effective, and perhaps some wee
bits I'm overlooking. Are there any wee bits to favor the more outboard
location?

Now for a real head trip. I took Jeff Small's advice and put mine
(Scratch built for an HDS) in the right wing to help counter the solo left
turning tendency. Look at the archives- most of the high time flyers either
put as much accessory weight in the right wing as possible, or wish they
had.
Most of our flying is going to be solo, and the bulk of the remainder
will be with Ma in the right seat.
Just a thought. If Ma outweighs you, you're probably mowing the yard
instead of building!!

It's normal for any new engine to run a little on the hot side during

Hmmm..Depends on what you want. The original soob ignitor chip is
notoriously feeble and csts $300 to boot..The NAPA TP 45 upgrade is the
way to go for a Stratus...I think NSI uses a different set up though if
I'm not mistaken.
