--> Zenith-List message posted by: Michel Therrien <mtherr@yahoo.com>
Hi Group! When building, I always enjoyed those
inspiring messages that kept me motivated to work on
the project... so, here is one from me.
Since a few weeks, I spend a lot more time working
around my house than flying. Saturday, familly and me
shuffled about 30 yards of earth and it was a long
day... Sunday early morning, nobody in my house wanted
to get out of bed and I decided it would be a unique
time to take a little break from working on the house
and go flying.
Enroute to the airport, I called my mother in
Sherbrooke and we arranged to meet at Sherbrooke's
airport. After a quick weather and notam check with
the FSS I deposited my flight plan and prepared the
plane (my local airport is 10 minutes from home).
Soon enough, I was flying, after a Pitts, a RV4 and 2
ultralights took off. The route to Sherbrooke is not
that long (50 minutes), but the scenery is quite nice
and the weather was simply beautiful. There were no
clouds, no wind, no turbulences... a great day!
After landing at CYSC, I saw my mother waiting for me
at the parking area. My mother is 65, suffers vertigo
when climbing on a chair and is normally not in a very
good physical shape... but Sunday, she was doing well,
smiling and asked me how it was in the air. She
wanted to try it for a ride!
I said hello to some of my friends, found somebody to
take pictures (I did not have my camera and I did not
imagine she would ask me for that). And then, I taught
her how to sit in the plane. Soon after, we were
taking of from runway 31 for a short local flight
(over her house). She enjoyed it (even though she
would have prefered I fly straight all the way with no
turns).
After a good breakfast, we said goodbye to each other
and I came back home, making some detours around areas
I like in Eastern Township (my uncle house near Magog,
Mount Orford, etc etc).
I was home for lunch and then got back to work.
Michel :-)

Hi again!
A friend and I recently made a significant decision.
We both enjoy flying and building, and we were both
interested in gaining more power for our aircrafts.
My 601-HD is powered by a Subaru EA-81 that runs very
well since last spring (before that, let say that the
fine tuning effort was a never ending process). While
the engine works well, I see my flying hours going up
fast and it was a done decision that instead of
eventually overhauling the engine again, I would have
a real aircraft engine (I guess the fine tuning year
affected me a bit).
When we saw the Franklin engine sales on the net, we
looked for what it involved. Then, a few weeks ago,
we decided to make the plunge and buy 2 engines (one
for me). The engine is now in my garage and I know
what I'll be doing when I finish working around the
house. I expect to fly behind a 125 hp engine next
year!
This said, I'll have for sale:
- a complete (read complete) FWF installation (with
engine, redrive, mount, prop, cowling, radiator,
radiator mount, manifold, air box, exhaust, etc etc
(approx 140h SMOH--I'd have to look at the engine log)
- a second rebuilt subaru engine short bloc (perfect
except one defective lifter) (approx. 100h SMOH)
- a second set of heads
- boxes of spare and complementary parts
- a box of distributors
- books, manuals, engine log
- and whatever I forget now.
The engine is fairly much tuned. I still find that
valves do not last very long before leaking, but I
would say the whole thing is pretty much satisfying
(when we look at flying/maintenance hour ratio ;-)
I will have that for sale somewhere in fall or winter
when I'm ready to mount the new engine on the plane.
In the mean time, I'll definitively continue to use
it.

1a. MSD (the maker of the coil mixer used in the design) recommends against
using both sides at the same time. There is another coil mixer (from
Mallory??) which is spec'ed for dual operation.
- is this first hand info? Stratus recommended against running both at once
but others said it wasn't a problem. I called MSD and they said it was ok.
Was the application described? I run both for takeoff and landing. It
would be nice to get some technical explanations from anyone who claims one
or the other but I didn't get any details and have never heard much either
way.

I have never heared of a single failure of the coil joiner (I run mine
both at the same time for 400 hours), Does anyone else know of one that
has failed?
Note there is no warning against using both ignitions together in the
Stratus manual as far as I remember.

Not burning valves. Initially, my engine was running
fairly lean and after 30-40 hours, intake valves would
leak. Last year, when I installed my second engine
which has a different cam from my 1st one, all genuide
Subaru parts and ported heads, I also tuned the
carburator. This time, after 100 hours, I had intake
valves leaking again. I looked at with the the
machinist and he found that the valve seat gets
distorded. The seat for the intake valve is really
close to the tip of the spark plug (when compared with
the exhaust seat). And the spark plug threads extend
right next to or even into the intake seat. I got a
valve job done a month ago (it is a simple affair now
that I'm used to it ;-) and this time, he ground the
threads that should not be there (to reduce the
surface area collecting heat)... we'll see.
The valves were all nice.

This was Mark Langford's quote from the installation instruction sheet that
came with his 8210: "The MSD P/N 8210 Automatic Coil Selector may also be
used without a changeover switch. Running the two units simultaneously will
require more amperage and will shorten the time a battery will remain
charged. Use this type of installation for short duration races". Nothing
like this appears on the sheet that came with my unit marked "Revised
08/01". In either case no dire warnings, no instant destruction. People have
spoken with MSD and received different answers. I suspect it is all a matter
of degree and a big factor would be the operating temperature of the unit
which in turn would be influenced by where and how it was mounted, etc.
The competing unit is Mallory's 29000. I can't find much on it. The
instructions may simple not address the point which leaves us free to assume
both legs can be used simultaneously. I believe that both the MSD and
Mallory units were dissected and found to contain differing numbers and type
of diodes. Way-too much information on the subject can be found in the
archives of the Corvair e-mail list at
http://www.maddyhome.com/corvairsrch/index.jsp
The "silent failure" issue is much more interesting to me.

Thank you Chris:
I talked to William recently and he told me something
that is noteworthy to you and other 701 builders (if
you don't already know). William is driving this
weekend to the ZAC Mexico, MO facility to pick up an
entire 701 kit in a box and has plans for a
world-record-speed-build of a CH701 with a Corvair
engine. Since you are doing the same (but maybe not
at world-speed-record pace) I suggest you find the
time to fly to Florida to visit William's hangar
during the later stages of this build. At the very
least, you will have William's web updates with
pictures of the Corvair installation in a 701.
I have been following his 601XL/Corvair build and
flight testing for a few years now and it has been a
tremendous help with my project. You should reap some
big rewards from his efforts. I suspect they will
have the thing up and flying in a matter of months.
The airplane will be owned by Merrill Isaacson who
works at William's hangar. I can't wait to see what
they come up with and how fast they accomplish this.
The Heintz family has been working with William over
the last few years to perfect the 601XL installation
and I expect no less with the 701/Corvair
installation.
Good luck with your build,
Scott Laughlin

That's great news. I'm heading to Cloverdale, CA this weekend for the Quality Sportsplanes
Fly-in where I hope to see more. Florida is on my list.
My 701 will not be standard. I've hesitated to post this due to responses like
you received earlier, but I'm actually building a 701 at 110% of stock dimensions
and using a 601 firewall, just so I can use the Corvair powerplant and go
for 1320# gross.
Now, before I get flamed, I spent two months reviewing the standard 701SP plans
and reviewed every on-line 801 drawing I could get at Zenith's site. Only then
did I calculate structural and material changes required to get a little more
interior room, the higher GVW and the ability to use that lovely Corvair powerplant.
I submitted 2 pages of proposed modifications to Chris Heintz for review and other
than a suggestion for a .032" HT spar material thickness, my plans were approved.
Mathieu tells me that my proposed mod's are very similar to the working
calcs for the briefly mentioned CH750. And sorry, no, I won't share my changes
with the open community as I don't want to be on the hook for anyone else's
skin but my own...
I'm glad to hear that William is giving it a go with the 701. His relationship
with Zenith and the Heintz family can only bring good things for all who are appreciative
of the harmonious ZenVair.
Those who don't care for this combo are welcome to continue flaming away. We consider
the source of all of the prattle that can fill these boards. To each, his
or her own, and may everyone enjoy this amazing hobby.
Thanks again to everyone in this community who have so freely shared USEFUL information
with those of us who have chosen to LEARN, BUILD & FLY.

on with pride. When WW gets done with what he does, it is bound to be another
GREAT combination of William Wynn and Chris Heintz's accomplishments. Which
will benefit those who respect, and appreciate what these two individuals
have done for the experimental market.-------- Fritz

Wonderful story Michel. I'm sure your mother was proud of you and told all
her friends of the experience. These are the moments we never forget.

The bore on my Rotax is 84mm (3.3"). I'm not sure what size the corvair has
but I'll bet it's larger. The Rotax has a dual plug system with dual
ignitions that are checked just like the Lycomings and other similar
aircraft engines. I get a rpm drop when switching one off just like they
do. And just like the others my ignition switch grounds out the ignition
circuit so a switch failure is more apt to keep the engine running than kill
it...but that's for Murphy to figure out. One check I do is when shutting
down the engine I let turn off one set 5 seconds before the other. Shut
down is smoother and I get a "Mag" check on shutdown too.

The piston area of the lycos is so large that
running both spark plugs will produce a much more
complete fuel burn, as proven by the RPM drop on mag
checks. The same results would likely not be realized
in the corvair with such a small diameter piston, even
with two spark plugs, so running both ignitions does
not help there.

Subject: | Pneumatic Blind Riveter Questions |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Debo Cox <sky_ranger161@yahoo.com>
Hi guys,
Just got my new el-cheapo $24 Harbor Freight pneumatic riveter and wanted to
ask a question or two about its operation since I've never really seen one in
action.
a. When I pull test rivets they set normally, but the mandrel doesn't seem like
it's being pulled straight back. Pulled rivets appear to be bent slightly over
to the left side. My hand-pulled rivets always seem to be pulled back squarely
onto themselves. Is this: (a.) a loose or slipping jaw in the riveter, and
(b.) ok if the rivet appears to be pulled slightly off-center?
b. Is the mandrel supposed to be deposited in the plastic cup at the rear of
the tool? Mine are staying in the nosepiece until I remove them by hand. I was
thinking that this may be a symptom of a mis-adjusted jaw as well.
Thanks for dealing with such mundane questions, but there are serious consequences
if the rivets aren't being pulled correctly, so I thought I'd ask.

She enjoyed it (even though she
would have prefered I fly straight all the way with no
turns). =
After a good breakfast, we said goodbye to each other
and I came back home, making some detours around areas
I like in Eastern Township (my uncle house near Magog,
Mount Orford, etc etc). =
I was home for lunch and then got back to work.

I can vouch for the wonderful design and engineering that Chris Heintz d=
id on the 801. When I floated my desire to install a V-8 Ford in my 801 =
all the guys at the ZAC kinda wished me well but none expressed any real=
doubt of the results. Now after reaching 100 hours I am sure the airfra=
me is more then strong enough. It shows absolutely no signs of deforming=
at all the attach points. The two real things that I fought through the=
first few hours was...
1- Trying to keep the beast from overheating,... I have attributed t=
hat to the fact that the 801 flys sooo slow the actual ram air pressure =
going through the rad and oil cooler was not enough to exchange heat to =
the airstream. Those issues are in the past..
2- The one area that almost bit me was taking off with full flaps and =
full power. I have a 0-150 mph airspeed indicator. I once tried to keep =
the stick all the way back and let it fly off. Just as the needle came a=
live, somewhere about 28 mph, the plane lifted off. Because of the rathe=
r large prop blast the tail feathers work to a degree, the real problem=
is that the flaperons when fully deployed are not effective at that slo=
w of an airspeed. The plane torque rolled and tried to hurt me !!!!!!!! =
Needless to say I will not repeat that stunt again, I will not rotate t=
ill I see at least 35 mph now. With that all said, I LOVE my 801 .!!!!!=

That's great news. I'm heading to Cloverdale, CA this weekend for the Qu=
ality Sportsplanes Fly-in where I hope to see more. Florida is on my lis=
t.
My 701 will not be standard. I've hesitated to post this due to response=
s like you received earlier, but I'm actually building a 701 at 110% of =
stock dimensions and using a 601 firewall, just so I can use the Corvair=
powerplant and go for 1320# gross.
Now, before I get flamed, I spent two months reviewing the standard 701S=
P plans and reviewed every on-line 801 drawing I could get at Zenith's s=
ite. Only then did I calculate structural and material changes required =
to get a little more interior room, the higher GVW and the ability to us=
e that lovely Corvair powerplant.
I submitted 2 pages of proposed modifications to Chris Heintz for review=
and other than a suggestion for a .032" HT spar material thickness, my =
plans were approved. Mathieu tells me that my proposed mod's are very si=
milar to the working calcs for the briefly mentioned CH750. And sorry, n=
o, I won't share my changes with the open community as I don't want to b=
e on the hook for anyone else's skin but my own...
I'm glad to hear that William is giving it a go with the 701. His relati=
onship with Zenith and the Heintz family can only bring good things for =
all who are appreciative of the harmonious ZenVair. =
Those who don't care for this combo are welcome to continue flaming away=
. We consider the source of all of the prattle that can fill these board=
s. To each, his or her own, and may everyone enjoy this amazing hobby.
Thanks again to everyone in this community who have so freely shared USE=
FUL information with those of us who have chosen to LEARN, BUILD & FLY.

Lynn,
I am using PPG one coat urethane. I just painted
one wing, and will start on the other wing when I
return from All Red Star on Sunday. I am not a very
good painter, but results can be deceiving with this
product. It goes on like silk, and is almost as tough
as powder coat. I'll never shoot acrylic enamel
again. As soon as I get the other wing painted, I
will update my website with fresh pics. I am doing it
very differently from most guys and painting as I
build. For me, it is much easier, and breaks up the
painting task. I painted the underside of the center
wing and aft fuselage before joining them together
(pic on website), and painted the tail, side fuse, top
fuse, cowling, and wings all separately. It could be
prettier, but then it could be a whole lot more
expensive too. I just don't let anyone within 5 feet
of the plane so they can't see the paint defects!
Nothing wet sanding and buffing can't fix, but I'll
save that for after it is flying...
I'll get anyone the part numbers of the paint if
you are having problems finding it, but PPG one coat
urethane should suffice. It is quite expensive, but
worth it. I think I am down $800 for paint, but I
can't remember, and really don't want to know.

Dave,
You are correct. The corvair stock cylider size
is 87.2998mm. If you get an RPM drop on the Rotax at
84mm, we probably would on the Corvair with two spark
plugs. Thank you for chiming in. I sit corrected...

Subject: | Re: Pneumatic Blind Riveter Questions |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Paul Mulwitz <p.mulwitz@worldnet.att.net>
Hi Debo,
Yes the stems normally are left in the front of the nose piece and
fall out if you tip the gun down. Sometimes they get jammed and you
wind up smacking them a little and they wind up in the little plastic
cup in the back. I think the cup is just to keep from sending the
odd stem flying back at the user.
I too had plenty of problems with rivets not set completely straight
with the work piece. I think this is a natural problem with the
shape of the rivet heads we use and the very narrow nose piece front
end. I solved it for most uses by making nose pieces with wide front
ends. That makes it easier to see when the nose piece is aligned
with the surface of the work piece. This can't be used in all cases
- it seems to make the rivets even more crooked when they are set at
a really bad angle. For those cases you can use the narrow nose
piece or a special one with the front end ground at an angle.
I think this is a bigger problem with the pneumatic riveter than the
hand riveter because of the speed the rivet is pulled. With the hand
riveter the process is so slow you can realign the rivet as you are
pulling it to make it straighter. That is not an option when it is
all pulled quickly by the air. It is much more critical that your
rivet stem is at a right angle to the work piece when you pull the trigger.
One last little bit - When I made the first few new nose pieces on my
lathe I didn't get the back end the right length. This caused
strange effects including requiring two pulls of the trigger to get
the rivet stem to break and rivets getting jammed in the riveter. I
found that if I made the ratio of the back portion of the nose piece
to the diameter of the rivet stem the same as all the nose pieces
included with the riveter all the problems go away. I know this
sounds complicated but is really simple in practice. Anyone who gets
in this little mess is welcome to write to me for a little help.
Good luck,
Paul

FWIW I have an MSD coil joiner on my Stratus engine and have run with both
ignitions continuously for 490 hours now without problems. Each ignition
system has its own switch to preclude a switch failure resulting in engine
failure.

This whole diatribe leaves me with two big questions:
1. What is wrong with having both ignitions operating at once as is
commonly done on certified aircraft engines? This allows the pilot
to spend his attention on flying the plane instead of managing the
engine in the (apparently common for William's resurrected Corvair
engines) event of an ignition failure.
2. I find it ironic that a salesman who says the weakest part of his
customer's system is the customer gets such a zealous following.
