I also used the AFS paints, mainly for the safety issues, it's not flammable, and
it's easy to clean up.

I am intending to modify my 701 to dual sticks shortly based on the 601 dual stick
option. Apart from some dimensional and proportional differences I see no
big problems. I would appreciate any input. In particular, DIRK from Piketberg

I've done a dual stick mod on mine, if you're interested.....

You might be interested in the way I designed my dual sticks. It's a total
retro-fit that allows you to put back the "Y" stick with little effort. See
it at http://www.skyhawg.com/sticks.html, or any questions, let me know.
Update, finally got my prop back from Warp Drive. Took almost a month.
Seems like painting the tips really got them out of balance. They
re-balanced them at no-charge. Got'm back on and starting my ground time
to tweak the prop. It's time to send in the paper work to the FAA for my
inspection.

Geoff, I flew the HD, HDS and XL with center stick. When I built my XL I
installed the duel stick and it is a joy when compared. The ability to change
hands and freedom in the cockpit have some real safety benefits (imagine trying
to
get to your fire extinguisher while flying left handed) and the feel of
"yanking and banking" with the stick at your knees is a true pleasure. FWIW, Bill

Dear Thread Friends, I made a mistake of not including the right side with
toe brakes when I built. Now I want to add the second side. Who out there has
accomplished this trick of standing on you head modification and addition ? Did
you purchase a second set of stuff from ZAC or did you just make the parts ?
I also plan on including a parking break valve. A second mistake and error on
my part that I should have done when building. Anybody have one of those and
where did you put it ? Best regards, Bill of Georgia

Hi Bill:
Scott Laughlin here. The guys at Matco
(www.matcomfg.com - (801) 486-7574) are helpful and
will walk you through the process. They have all the
parts needed for this modification except the actual
pedal modification. They also have some good diagrams
on this page:

Hello all,
I am finishing the center wing section and nearing the last four steps of
the center wing work report of compressing the bungees. The original manual
says that everything except the top skins can be riveted at this point. Is
this correct? I could not find anything directly answering this in the
archives, and looking ahead in the plans I did not find any conflicts.
Thanks

Geoff, perhaps I can help, save you some time and effort!
The 601 dual stick option is not a retrofit to the 701, there are a number
of changes, not rocket science, but time consuming.
Contact me off list, I can send you some pics.

Scott, thanks. Did you install dual brakes? and the parking brake valve? I
flew to a strip in Tennessee the other day and the whole place was the side of
a ridge, strip as well. Just try to park and exit a rolling XL while your
trying to get around it to chock the tires and you'll know why the parking brake
modification is a plus. Bill

John,
Hold off putting rivets in the top skins until there are no more
plumbing issues, brakes, fuel, electrical
etc. I riveted the skins after the fuselage firewall and side skins
were on my 601HDS. All plumbing etc
is much easier to get at and work out. If you haven't, you might
consider the addition of nylon bearings
for the struts beneath the skin doubler and plate and on the gear boxes
as it will add considerably to the
lifespan of the bearings.

Hi Peter,
I am not sure what is available in Germany but here we have a sort of
plastic corrugated signboard available in hardware stores and salvaged
from discared yard signs that is very light and strong. It is
constructed exactly like cardboard-- flat surface of material with
sandwitch or corrugated plasticised material in between top and bottom
sheet. It weighs very little for it's strength, is water proof and one
or two layers of it on the bottom of the locker should prevent anything
of moderate weight from creasing or punching the bottom skin. I think
the material is called Corform, but am not sure. I bet another lister
can name it for you.
Good luck and great to hear from a 601HDS in Germany.

at the flimsy 0.4mm (0.016 " for most of you) bottom skin, I fear that my wing
will be destroyed the first time I put anything into that locker. In my imagination
the only baggage possible in these lockers are pullovers and jackets without
zippers. When flying through some rough turbulence, even a soft carry all
or travel bag would make nasty dents when not properly secured.

Even the high detail builder pages of Michel or Lance did not give a
clue.

Very od behavior indeed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there some reason, that you can't share your modifications
for everyone. Ie. putting those pictures to some free home
page? I HATE people, who won't share their information
for everyone, especially, when we are not talking about
space shuttles.
I "fight" against this kind of behavior in finland time to time.
"Old farts" keeps their information under their butt and when
you are going to ask something from them: "I haven't time....".

Here's a better pic of the handle linking the two valves together. Step on
the brakes, pull the handle back, and the pressure is locked inside the
wheel cylinders. I've left it "in park" for weeks without any loss of
holding power.

Is there some reason, that you can't share your modifications
for everyone. Ie. putting those pictures to some free home
page? I HATE people, who won't share their information
for everyone, especially, when we are not talking about

I "fight" against this kind of behavior in finland time to time.

Subject: | Yet another wing locker question. |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Allen Ricks" <allenricks@verizon.net>
Fellow listers,
I'm building the CH 601XL with the newer (read goes further back)
baggage area behind the passenger compartment.
After reading various problems, questions, and issues with the
wing lockers (water intrusion etc) I'm beginning to question if
I really need the wing lockers.
Can anyone who has finished tell me if I really need them?
Do you have issues with CG when using the baggage compartment
behind the seats. It would seem there is enough room other than
for extensive camping expeditions.
Do you really need the extra space the wing lockers provide?
Has anyone retro-fitted the lockers after building, and how much hassle
was it to do?
It would save time to leave them out... Build quicker, fly sooner.
Thanks in advance

That is what I did with no problems. I still haven't riveted the top skins just
in case. Of course, the soft aluminum trim between the fuselage side skins
and the wing top skin has to wait also.

I have never tried and do not know how to post pics up here yet. (I guess I need

Allen,
Yes. You should put in the wing lockers.
Although my wing lockers have a water intrusion problem, I use them all the time.
They are located at the CG and carry up to 40 lbs each in my factory-built
SLSA, a total of 80 lbs. The baggage area behind the seats is cavernous, but
is limited to 40 lbs total. Without the wing lockers you are limited to 40 lbs
of baggage. With wing lockers you can carry up to 120 lbs of baggage. Of
course you are limited by the useful load (mine has 591 lbs), but in certain circumstances
you will be glad you have the extra baggage capacity.

Allen, Jari need not do what Jon, David and Myself have already done.
www.ch601.org www.ch701.com are websites for all builders to share. If
someone has something to share to the group they send it to me and I add
it to the site. Jari's tone was a bit off from his usual postings but I
will just add that to a frustrating day he had and he may have just
vented in the wrong direction instead of suggesting to send the
modification to www.ch701.com for everyone to share. I volunteered to do
these websites quite some time ago, now I need you to send me stuff to

Ken , try the builders resources of www.ch601.com I just checked them
and they work fine. But remember to check your plans against the layout
as some parts have gone from .016 to .025 since those layouts were made.
There are also a few new pieces that are in the newest version of the
plans that are not on the layouts.

Subject: | Wing Tip Coordinates - 601 |

I have a slight discrepancy in wing tip coordinates between the
chart on the drawing, 6-W-9, and where the spar and channel ends would seem
to indicate they should be. If anyone who has completed this stage is
willing, I'd like some finished dimensions as follows:
"wing tip rear skins" chart, Y bottom, the drawing says 365mm at
station 0, 389mm at 790, with straight line between. My 0 station looks like
it should be 10 - 15mm shorter, and my 730 station 5mm longer than these
figures. I would like the dimensions on other finished wingtips from
the rib 9 rivet line to the finished skin cut, bottom side, at these two
stations.
I hope I haven't made this sound too confusing to
understand.
Thanks,
Lynn

How do strings get so far off topic, people?
I'm right at the point where I have to decide whether to go with single
or dual sticks myself, and none of the list entries have addressed what I
consider to be the important questions. I've flown all my life with a yoke,
and don't know s_it from shinola about the "Feel" of flying with a stick: I
have both the factory supplied Y stick and plans for duals. The question is,
which way to go based on experience?
From a design standpoint, the factory Y stick seems to have been adopted
for occupant comfort and economy of construction. On the other hand, dual
sticks might have an operational advantage.
How about input from the high time flyers out there? What are your
comments as far as ergonomics versus the cost of fabricating other than
factory supplied parts and specially designed seats to provide clearance for
the sticks?
Appreciate your input.

Hi Allen,
I have built the wing lockers in two of my three wings now. They are
a bit of effort, but not outrageous to build. The biggest problem is
there are no instructions, just drawings.
I think you would be best off to include them in the first pass. It
would be difficult to add them after riveting the wing skins.
Whether you need them or not is a decision I can't make for you. I
liked the extra space right at the CG. Also I opted for standard
fuel tanks so I have plenty of weight allowance for baggage. I don't
really plane to go camping in my plane, but that is always a
possibility. The wing lockers might also be a good place to store
those things you only need sometimes like tie downs, chocks, or extra
fuel cans.
Good luck,
Paul

Hi Lynn,
I don't have the dimensions handy, but I just finished cutting the
curve on my top rear skin today. I decided to use the ends of the
spars as the endpoint of the tip rather than the dimensions on the
drawings. I was off by around 5 mm or so. I think the front spar
was 5 mm short and the rear channel was a little bit long.
I think you will find it is more important to have a good rivet
spacing on the angle you have to bend to meet the spars than it is to
have the exact wing length in the drawings. I wouldn't be surprised
to learn the drawings are off a little anyway.
Good luck,
Paul

Subject: | CH-801 STOL project for sale |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jeff & Evelyn Green" <jegreen@apexmail.com>
Due to my transfer to another city to complete my engineering degree, I will
be in a situation where I will not be able to continue work on my CH-801 for
the next couple of years. My plan has been to put the project in storage
during that time; it can easily be suspended from the roof of a hangar. But
in a way, I hate to see the project sitting for so long. And storage could
cost quite a bit. So I've decided to put my project on the market. This is
not a desperation sale! I still have the storage option. Still, considering
the time and craftsmanship that have gone into it, this is an excellent
value! Especially by comparison to the factory price for a quickbuild.
I am an A&P mechanic, and have been in contact with the factory throughout
the building process. I completed the rudder, horizontal stabilizer, and
rear fuselage. I'm working on joining the cabin and rear fuselage. I've done
meticulous work, and have one phase inspection signed by an EAA inspector.
In order to complete the project, one would need to purchase the wing,
landing gear, and controls kits directly from Zenith, as well as the FWF and
instruments. Included in the sale is about $800 worth of tools, including a
14' x 4' flat and infinitely adjustable work table, jigs and fixtures. The
price is $9999.
Email me directly if you have any questions.

Bill,
I've flown both and find the Yoke is a serious advantage for getting in
and out, both passenger and pilot.
The dual stick provides a problem when you have to stick your head down
near the header valve or the brake pedals
to fill the reservoir. I can't see any great reason to reinvent the
standard stick for each seat. Cost is not at issue,
but simplicity is hard to duplicate, especially when it is functional.

There is a simple way of posting a picture, regardless of web sites:
All you have to do is to go to the Matronics forum, write a note and attach the

Those the frequent the forum will see the picture there, while those that receive
email, will get
a link to the forum post, as in my recent test below.
Note that to post a messge on the forum, you need to register, a relatively painless
process.

Thanks, Larry.
Cost IS an issue, if you already have the factory component!

The list Mark is talking about is what I am using as a check off. I was fortunate
to have purchased most of the material from one individual who could not continue
the project.
Cross check that list back to the drawings as you make up the final list. I know
Mark would be glad to post an updated list if you can supply it.

I want to buy some Scotch Brite pads. I have tracked it down to these.
3M 7447 (maroon)
3M 7448 (grey)
They are silicon based one coarser the other finer.Based on your experience
are these the best for aluminum? If not what do you recommend?

I would start with 20 of each, I believe that I used more than that. I
primed all my parts in and out.
