In here, in Europe, almost all vehicles has two or more engine choices.
Gasoline, diesel, gas (butane)...

Hmmm.... So we have figured out the conflict. Scotchbrite apparently says yes,
Heintz says no. Does the newsletter explain Heintz's reasoning? Perhaps he
was following Scotchbrite's own recommendation that has changed?

It says that using Scotchbrite S is prohibited on aluminum, magnesium, and
copper, and Scotchbrite A is recommended on aluminum. S is ok for steel and
corrosion resistant steel.

Check this out
http://store.yahoo.com/fittingsandadapters/femjic37swiv.html
You want the JIC 4-6....JIC is the same thread and seat angle (37deg) as
the AN series of fittings. Theyy may also have them at your loacal
hydraulics shop...Check www.summitracing.com also as they may have the
equivilent in aluminium.
Of course you will want the AN6 nipple to connect the alu tube to the
fitting shown.

Making the engines run on alcohol is no trick. But most of the seals and
rubber parts in the typical engine are not compatible so would have to be
changed - not sure how because I don't think you can run down to the nearest
NAPA store and buy ethanol compatible stuff for your <insert your engine
type here>.
It does take almost twice as much alcohol (volume) to make the same power so
you'd be burning twice the gph as with gasoline. One must open up the main
jets to get enough into the cylinders. Even if the fuel half as expensive
it's not even a break even deal considering the cost of modifying the engine
to be compatible.
And last but not least, the vapor pressure of alcohol is way less than
gasoline so the well-worn warning of vapor lock in the lines between the
tanks and the engine is even more likely with ethanol than with gasoline.
Not to mention the ability of alcohol to absorb water....(hummm, that might
be a good thing..?)

I have the ZAC furnished wheels, tires & tubes. The tubes have 90 deg valve stems
and are threaded for a thin nut at the base of the stem.
What's the trick for getting the nut on after the tube is on the wheel? It seems
to require higher dexterity or more hands than I currently possess.

Silicon carbide is a compound of silicon and carbon. Carbon and aluminum don't
play well together, they're far apart on the table of electronegativities (large
potential for galvanic corrosion). This is probably the concern
Chris has for this type of abrasive. Although, as I understand it, the carbon is
pretty tightly bound to the silicon in this compound and might not pose a large
corrosion problem.

Doug,
CH is simply repeating what is said in AC43.13-1B
Chapter 6, Page 6-22, Table 6-1. Silicon Carbide is
only for use on Ferrous or Titanium. Aluminum Oxide or
Garnet for Aluminum and Magnesium. It seems that no
matter what "anybody" says, people will use what they
want because "somebody" said it was OK. As for me, I
will follow "The Book".

It is probably the same reason that a regular lead pencil (graphite) should

Note that the nuts are left-hand metric thread. Pull a five pound vacuum on the
tube and put 'em on from the back side.
If that fails just don't use the nuts; they were supplied to prevent the tube from
departing as a result of landings in excess of 200 kts.
Mine don't have any nuts either.

Kevin,
I've got the wheels and tubes like you used. Don't have nuts on mine,
but used a S-83 Michelin Tire
which is 3.50 x 8.00 and has perhaps a better profile than the ones from
Zenith. I recommend you
put a rubber fender washer on the stem before putting the wheel together
and it will protect your tube
from damage. I found mine at farm and fleet when tubes became leakers
and were replaced. The edge
of the wheel where the stem exits is too sharp and large a diameter for
the stem. see links,
http://www.macsmachine.com/images/gear/full/tubecrack.gif
http://www.macsmachine.com/images/gear/full/tubetireandwasher.gif
http://www.macsmachine.com/images/gear/full/tubewasherassy.gif
I smoothed the radius of the stem hole, added the rubber washer and that
solved both problems

However, I haven't spent too much time on the Smart car at all, so it was

For our American friends (since the Smart is not sold in the US): The Smart
is a 2 seater car made by a JV with Chrysler Daimler. It is tiny even for
European standards - you probably can load two of those things on the flat

airplane use . The engine is light weight, burns mogas, and produces around
100 hp.

Hello everyone,
Just joined the list. I am in Alaska and looking for a kit plane project to start
on. I have over 2000 hours in various aircraft from the age of 16 (now 48)
and am looking for something I can fly in and out of my 300 X 600 foot piece
of property I now live on.
From what I have found so far the Zenith air CH 701 will do what I want but I
ran across the Savannah knock off of this aircraft on the web last night which
appears to be a better choice for me, although more expensive.
Any opinions pro or con between the two here?

Christopher,
You might add the 801 to that list because Alaska is a place that the
801 would
seem most suitable. Easy to access your place as well. Recently there
was an
801 partially done for sale, but you'll only have to search a bit for it.

Subject: | Zenith air CH 701 vs. skykits.com Savannah (knock off). |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Allen Ricks" <allenricks@verizon.net>
Hi Chris,
I was looking at the Savannah last year. I went to the Arlington
airshow to look at the 701 and the Savannah. Shortly before the
Arlington airshow, a Savannah aircraft had a structural failure, A wing
collapsed,
and the aircraft crashed killing the pilot, and I believe a passenger (this
occured
in one of the Scandanavian countries if I recall correctly).
At the Arlington airshow, I asked the Savannah guy about a ride and
he stated that they "could not easily take the aircaft out of the
tent" and he therefore could not give me a ride. After that I asked
him about the accident and he said "you heard about that huh? I'm not
trying to hide anything from you". I believe at the time his aircraft
was grounded due to the aforementioned structural failure, but he was
never really clear on that.
I know that accidents happen, and it had been postulated that the aircraft
in question had not been properly cared for, not properly inspected, yadda,
yadda, yadda. I also heard there were sturctural and inspection related
changes that were made after the accident.
I just didn't get a good feeling from the dealer. Your mileage may vary.
I then went over to the Zenith display. I looked at the 601 and 701. I
talked
Nick in to a ride in the 601. I then told Michael that I wish they had a
quick
build 601. That was a VERY expensive wish, as he showed me the 601
quickbuild
that would be released at Oshkosh. He was willing to sell me one at
Arlington
though :)
I'm not sure when (or if) the 750 is supposed to be released, but you might
ask about that.
It's a completed version of the 701 with a higher gross for the LSA market.
You also may ask about what the new CNC machine has changed in the 701. If
many of the
holes get drilled, it may be a good option.
Like I say, the Savannah may be a perfectly good aircraft, but I didn't have
a good feeling
after talking with the dealer. There are also a whole lot less people (like
all those on
this list) that would be able to help you if you run in to issue building
the plane.

Hello everyone,
Just joined the list. I am in Alaska and looking for a kit plane project
to start on. I have over 2000 hours in various aircraft from the age of 16
(now 48) and am looking for something I can fly in and out of my 300 X 600
foot piece of property I now live on.
From what I have found so far the Zenith air CH 701 will do what I want
but I ran across the Savannah knock off of this aircraft on the web last
night which appears to be a better choice for me, although more expensive.
Any opinions pro or con between the two here?

Does anyone know the key to being able to contact WW, the Corvair Authority?

Thanks for responses.

Thanks for your responses everyone, some in private.
I have much to consider now and am also looking at the 801 too. I am going to
an EAA meeting near here tonight where I hope to meet Jim Frisby and will probably
be able to get an in person look-see at his 801 sometime soon.
I like the 801 more but have concerns if it will be able to get in and out of
my 300 X 600 foot piece of property. In the short direction I have a run 300
feet long which is clear of fenses with long open stretches of clear land on the
departure end (prevailing winds come from that direction). The other end has
some 25-50 foot tall cotten wood trees and brush which I can probably get permission
to clear.
The long way across the property clear but also slanted down until it gets to
a 100 foot tall hill on the north end which rises fairly quickly beginning at
about 700 feet from the end of my property. The opposite direction, the uphill
slant is fairly flat for the first 300 feet and then begins a gradual upslope
for the remaining 300 feet of the run with a 35 foot tall building near the
south end.
I believe the downhill 600 foot run is no problem and may actually help me get
off quicker without the hill on the end becoming a factor at all for the Ch
701 and that the cross direction 300 foot run is enough for the CH 701 but I have
doubts a gross weight 801 can use that run without a fairly stiff headwind.
Of course, my opinions are based on little information and impressions I am getting
from things gound on the net. I'd sure appreciate feedback from people
who have flown either the 701 or the 801 to understand if the 801 is just too
big for safe in and outs of my place. I don't mind pushing it up to within 20
percent of maximum performance on an occasional basis but don't like doing that.
I'd be happier if I don't have to use more than 60% or less of what the aircraft
is capable of on a regular basis.
I used to fly a PA-12 with a 150 HP engine into and out of a place where I had
15 percent or less length of a run left over for fudge factoring but didn't
like to do that too often.
How wide an area should I clear of trees for a good solid short field with this
aircraft?

Christopher,
You might add the 801 to that list because Alaska is a place that the
801 would
seem most suitable. Easy to access your place as well. Recently there
was an
801 partially done for sale, but you'll only have to search a bit for it.

Reaching William is hit and miss. Best way these days is to call the hanger:
(386) 478-0396. In my experience repeated calls are more effective than
leaving a message but it depends on the situation.
Currently he is busier than usual between the summer air shows, a road trip
to Canada and some (good) things happening in his personal life.
I suspect that if you are posting your question on this list then you may
not know about the Corvair-aircraft-specific list. That is certainly a great
place to ask questions that don't require a answer directly from William:
Search the CorvAircraft archives at
http://www.maddyhome.com/corvairsrch/index.jsp
Other CorvAircraft list info is at
http://www.krnet.org/corvaircraft_inst.html
The correct etiquette is to search the archives before asking a question.
You can also search William's extensive web site for answers to general
questions. Try:
http://www.davemorris.com/SearchFlyCorvair.cfm
Or try the Google box at the bottom of William's home page:
www.flycorvair.com.
For general questions the first thing to do is look for the answer in
Williams conversion manual. He is also more receptive to answering questions
from people who have purchased the manual.
This is undoubtedly more than you wanted to know - hopefully some of it will
be helpful.
