Installed the controls cables after the wings were finished. No major
problem. Just tape the cable to a long pole or broom handle, and stick the
cable though the correct lightening hole. No probs. Having said that, I
would still purchase the controls kit earlier in the process. Canopy can
wait.

Really?...I doubt that was as a result of the stem coming out at the
speed of a bullet...They really don't work that way (at least mine
doesn't) Are you sure the cup wasn't full and it was the problem of
trying to stuff one more stem into an already full cup?
If you take the cup off how fast to the stems 'fly' out of the back?

List,
What are 912 flyers using for engine oil?
The Rotax "Service Instruction" (SI-18-1997) that I have is several years old.
Possibly this isn't the most recent list of recommended oils, but I have noticed
that some of the wording used in the "Description" column does not match the
labels on present-day products.
Maybe I've overlooked a later version of this listing.
As an example, Rotax lists "Mobil 1". There are at least three versions of Mobil
1; automobiles, 4-stroke motorcycles, and V-Twin motorcycles; Rotax doesn't
specify which.
The glossy brochures pitch all the benefits (usual manufacturers' hype) but there
is a difference stated.
The motorcycle version is said to contain gear-lubricating additives.
Likewise there are other slight differences between the Rotax list nomenclature
and what is actually on the shelves of Wal-Mart, NAPA, AutoZone, etc, etc.
It looks like a slow day, so everybody jump in here......we might all learn something.
Thanks, and don't forget the flowers for Mother's Day!!

Chris,
I just returned from a trip with my wife last night and am at work today.
Will get off work at 06:00 tomorrow, then off to a funeral. My plan is to
attempt to put out some more detailed information tomorrow, but may not get
that done before Monday due to work. The details will include pictures,
costs and all the rest.
I have to leave to get some work done with the crew - more later.
The airplane is about 30 miles south of Tucson, AZ.

one of our assembly teams at work uses quite a few different rivet guns. All
have had the cup removed for ease of use. It works pretty well, just sweep
the floor at the end of the day. So far no one has lost a forehead in the process!
: ) There have been quite a few flying rivet stems, but they have little
mass and cause no damage. I mean, hey. We can strap a thousand pound piece
of aluminum to our butts and take to the air. I think we should be able to
dodge a few rivet stems without worry. : )

Hello Scott,
I have been using the Harbor Freight riveters (about 6 at a time always) in
my factory since I knew about HF, could be since early 90's.
This is 8 hrs a day, until they just fail (they last several years a piece)...
The cup is the first thing to get lost. Never had a stem ejected. the only
problem is when a stem gets caught inside the jaws and need to be desasembled
and cleaned, then back to work...
Cant imagine how this could happen. with a straple gun, one worker bulls eyed
a lamp in the roof and got fired, he was practicing "straple shooting". But
this is another tool and story :-)

The oil we are using here (Mexico) is a blend oil sold for the big 4 cycle Honda
motorcycles... We had this advice from the owner of Kodiak and Luis Gallo
(the Rep of Kodiak for Latin America) one time they visit our Club and gave
us a complete mantainace course.
So any good quality blend oil that has aditives for using as a transmision oil
will work.
In short: Blend means that uses part sintetic and part mineral in his formula,
pure sintetic oils dont "work" properly as heat tranfer in aircooled engines
and dont "transport" the lead from AVGas...
Sintetic are good for water cooled engines that use autogas.
This is what I learned, but could be wrong, But happy to learn with facts.
Note: Rotax has water cooled heads, but uses oil as cooler also.

Per the service bulletin (don't remember the number offhand) and per conversations
with a tech rep from LEAF, and per a talk with Phil Lockwood, I use Valvoline
Durablend 10w-40. It's a semi
synthetic oil that is compatible with both mogas and avgas usage. And also should
be available at your local auto parts dealer.

The above part numbers are a fitting and a support that attach on each side to
the instrument panel, one left and one right. What is intended to be held by
the fittings? I got these same parts with both the Zenith kit and the JabiruUSA
FWF kit. So evidently both companies intend that these parts be used.
I also have a question about the panel thickness. Installing the JabiruUSA dual
throttle option, it is clear to me that the panel is simply too thin to easily
operate the two cable throttles. The panel is too flexible to hold the throttle
still. Are the above parts somehow supposed to be involved?
Thanks for any light you can shine on this.

Chris,
Back in the firehouse and have a few minutes to provide some additional
information.
The CH701 is a kit from early 1990 's with a gross plans weight of 1,100lb.
It will take the larger Rotax 914UL or 914S and I have an engine mount for
that application. I have a 66HP Rotax 582 with 50 hours on it and the mount
- this is the engine that I am (was) going to use. The slats, flaparons,
wings, fuselage, and tail are complete. The tail is attached, landing gear
is attached and most of the cockpit is completed. Joints, wing interior,
etc. are zinc chromated.
Whomever purchases the kit will need to finish installing the header tank,
instrument panel, upholstery, attach wings, windshield, doors, install
instruments, complete engine compartment and install engine, paint, etc. I
also have a propeller, set of instruments, lights (wing lights installed),
door pats (not for bubble doors though) and various other parts, pieces,
etc. Several sets of plans and other misc. items.
The airplane will fit into a 24' U-Haul Truck without any real problem (jus=
t
care in loading and securing) for transport. Might work on a good trailer
too, but the U-Haul protects the airplane much better during transport. We
live 30 miles south of Tucson, Arizona.
I am asking $14,000, which is a pretty good deal - however, I might conside=
r
other options such as purchase of the airframe without the engine, etc. We'=
d
would have to discuss the cost if this type of sale were made.
I will get pictures and other information together this weekend.
Steve

Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone is using a manual flap activator system instead of the
electric flaps on the XL. I did an archive search and found a couple of people
asking about this a while back, but no real answers. Seems an early factory
prototype had manual flaps, but looks like they were scrapped for some reason.
I'm wanting to keeps things as simple and foolproof as possible. Did anybody
ever have any luck with this? I'm going to contact Zenith, but thought I'd ask
here first. Thanks again for all of the great discussion.

All--
Tony is correct--- I talked to Nick at Zenith (several months ago) when I had
to decide which size tab to put on my XL---My plans showed the small tab, and
the updates showed the larger tab------ Nick told me that, " the smaller size
tab was a transition from the HD model which did not have flaps-------- With
flap use on the XL the smaller tab is not big enough to get rid of all the stick
pressure, therefore the bigger tab was introduced."
My decision was: I built the smaller tab, as (1) I prefer some back pressure
in the landing configuration and (2) the trim wouldn't be so sensitive in the
cruise mode.

They're intended to help strengthen things. You might follow the example of
several other builders and just go with a thicker panel. While you're at it,
the panel is one of the areas where a custom plane can really shine. By this
time in the build, you're already familiar with most of the fabrication techniques
needed. There are hundreds of great examples on the builders' web sites
out there.
Let me know if I can be of help if you go with the thicker panel. I can get
one laser cut for you in short order. Cost is pretty reasonable.

throttle option, it is clear to me that the panel is simply too thin to easily
operate the two cable throttles. The panel is too flexible to hold the throttle
still. Are the above parts somehow supposed to be involved?
Thanks for any light you can shine on this.

My (uninstalled) trim tab fits between the two riblets and is about 530 mm
wide. It is shown in 6-ATO-1 dated 2/04. Is this the older, narrower design
or the newer, wider one? If the narrower one, how does a wider tab fit
around the riblets?

That's pretty much what I've got planned. Looking back though it would have been
nice to do while the wing was sitting open on my work bench.

My elevator was completely skinned, than I cutout and installed the trim tab afterwards.
I used plans dated 02/03 page 6-T-6. the cut out calls for 417mm (between
inbd and center ribs.-------- my finished and installed tab is 410mm.
Using updated plans 08/05) calls for a cutout of 900mm and a tab length of 895mm------
the aft (cutout area) of the center rib would have to be cut also if
built to the old plans and installing the (new) larger tab. The new tab drawing
is shown on the Zenith builders site updates.

I see a list of Acrobat files which describe changes to the plans at:
http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/xl/xl-up-drawings.html
Are you saying the actual updated drawing are on the web site? If so where?

They can be found in the builder's area: http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/xl/xl-up-drawings.html
If you are still unable to locate them, email me and I'll send it to you.
The trim tab is very easy to add, even if your elevator is already skinned.

Craig-
You are in the general area: but, find:
ZODIAC XL PHOTO ASSEMBLY GUIDES, scroll down to: 6-T-6 (2 listed), second one
is titled: DRAWING: trim tab. Click on the 6-T-6 and the drawing should appear-----
I'll see if I CAN post the link in a different message.

If you are using only automobile gas then a synthetic like Mobil 1 is good
to go. However, if you are using AVGAS for a good portion of the time, you
need a semi-synthetic oil. I'm using Aeroshell Semi-Synthetic.

List,
What are 912 flyers using for engine oil?
The Rotax "Service Instruction" (SI-18-1997) that I have is several years
old.
Possibly this isn't the most recent list of recommended oils, but I have
noticed that some of the wording used in the "Description" column does not
match the labels on present-day products.
Maybe I've overlooked a later version of this listing.
As an example, Rotax lists "Mobil 1". There are at least three versions of
Mobil 1; automobiles, 4-stroke motorcycles, and V-Twin motorcycles; Rotax
doesn't specify which.
The glossy brochures pitch all the benefits (usual manufacturers' hype) but
there is a difference stated.
The motorcycle version is said to contain gear-lubricating additives.
Likewise there are other slight differences between the Rotax list
nomenclature and what is actually on the shelves of Wal-Mart, NAPA,
AutoZone, etc, etc.
It looks like a slow day, so everybody jump in here......we might all learn
something.
Thanks, and don't forget the flowers for Mother's Day!!

Jeff,
You might just deviate from the plans enough to construct something with
more support behind the panel and then as I did,
place a panel of .062 in front of it. Very rigid, removable en total,
or just the 6-pack area. Adds a little time, but well
worth it in the long run.

-Snip-
"What is intended to be held by the fittings" is the
aft attachments of the mounting straps, for the
fuselage header fuel tank (if installed).
If you don't install the header tank, you might want
to leave the supports in as panel reinforcements.
Leave the fittings off to save a few ounces.

I was thinking about adding a tab on the tab. That would be a tab riveted to the
bottom of the exsisting tab that would stick out another inch or so past the
trailing edge of the elevator. Anybody done this yet.Jack in Los Osos Ca

Jack,
I have the same problem with my XL relative to running out of elevator trim
with flaps. In flight, I use very little trim and most of the time my trim
setting is pretty close to neutral so I do not want to change the incidence
of my horiz stab.. I automatically trim full nose up as I lower flaps and
still have to hold back pressure. I believe the solution is to go to a full
span trim tab as per the latest Zodiac dwgs.
