I will work on the outer tank connection today. As soon as I have photos of the
installation I will post them on my website.

I just checked the space between nose ribs #5 and #6 (approx. 0.4 inch). It is
hardly possible to install an access panel that also gives access to and allows
changing of the finger filter. In my opinion it is impossible to change the
finger screen at the outer tanks without removing the tank.
Well, how often does it happen that you have to change finger screen filters? It
would be probably easier to flush the fuel line/finger screen/outer tank in
a reverse way with water or so (for cleaning of the finger screen, after a certain
amount of flight time).

I found the below in my "archives". I also believe I asked Nick at Zenith
about the lack of an access panel for the outboard aux tanks and received
the same reply, but could not find his reply. After studying the access
cover size, I figured it was marginal for any maintenance function and
possibly impossible to use. I did not install the finger screen access
covers for either inboard or outboard tanks.

Here's 2c worth about providing access to the fingerscreen ( fuel tank
outlet)
through the LE skin. If you want to put in the cover with its nutplates as
shown on the plans, leave a rivet-free zone when drilling the skin to the
noseribs
NR-3 & 4. It's not mentioned in the manual, and I had already drilled the
holes when I discovered it. ZAC doesn't have this on their demo ship, but
added
it to meet anticipated LSA requirements. I decided to cut the hole, and made
a cover to be riveted on with the skin.

We are building a 601 XL The airplane will not have the extra tanks installed,
but I will like to post my point of view:
If the space for mantainance of the finger screen and replacing the hose, is
limited by the rib, then. Why not making a reinforcing plate of aluminum (could
be from the same 0.025 or a little heavier) inside and of course around the
inspection hole, then cut the piece of rib only enough to have space to work?
Will be good idea to ask ZAC, I am sure the area will be structuraly sound with
almost the same weight., that is the point in first place.
Will study that part of the plans tonight, I am almost sure that I have the
drawing with the option in my set of plans, just I am not completly sure because
I will not have the option installed.. so dont remember studying it,

Thanks Bill: After flying this morning I think the Extra 1" I added to the trim
is working fine for the trim now. This trim difference may have something to
do with the difference in our empty cg's. Mine is 311 empty and I think I may
be a little aft of what others have been reporting. Now that I think about
it a aft cg would make it easier to flare on landing so forget what I said. Anyway,
it is working ok now and now I have a little oil leak on the oil pump of
the Jab. This will be an easy fix and I will be confident with leaving the pattern
now. The heat issue seems to be ok also. Today I saw 145mph with full power.
I think I will easily get 130 cruise with no wheel pants. Jack in Fresno

Jack, my knowledge of what makes "it" go up and down is very limited,
especially when "it" doesn't seem to be doing what "it" should. Have you called
Nick
and Roger at ZAC with this ? When flying I have a touch of down trim when
near max load and even less when flying alone. I neutral both aileron and
elevator trims just prior to base and land without or with full flaps and pitch
control all the way to stall on it's tail. I think I even scraped the rear tie
down
loop last summer and recovered to set it on the mains with gentle pitch
control. I wish I had an answer, maybe calling the "brain trust" at ZAC can offer
a
solution. Best regards, Bill of Georgia

Does anyone know if the landing gear arrangement and dimensions of a Savannah are
identical to a 701?
Specifically, I have been offered a set of CZAW floats (the type with a separate
nose wheel in the middle) that came off a Savannah and I'd like to know if they'll
just bolt straight onto my 701.
Thanks,
Chris

Jack, great to hear your progress ! I to flew this morning. Had business in
Waycross about 160 miles south east and instead of driving for hours and hours
I touched down after flying about an hour 10. Had a little tail wind. First
real productive thing I have accomplished in three years of building and a year
of flying. About a thousand more and I break even. Ha. Coming back the weather
turned harsh and landed with a wicked cross wind, 20 gusting to 25 kts. She
was frisky, but the Big Pilot in the Sky helped me get her down. Thanks to CH @
Zac for that extra strong landing gear. It will take a bump. Best regards,

hi list:
i am fitting my hor stabalizer on the aircraft and
trying to have it in line with the upper longeron i am
wondering how precise it must match. I think it is
within a few degrees. What is the effect of it being
off a little. i know it will effect the nose up/down
attitude, but is it serious or annoying. it seems
that this would be the best place to adjust the
incidence after completion.
I have it dead center on the centerline,ie
perpendicular to the flight path. i am actually
hoping that all of the little variations in
installation will even out and my machine will fly
right.
this is getting fun.

The angle of the main wing affects the pitch attitude of the airplane. The angle
of the horizontal tail only affects the trim forces required to maintain level
flight, not the pitch attitude. If the angle is correct, you should be able
to use the trim tab to cancel out elevator forces from cruise speed down to slow
flight speeds. If it is a few degrees off, the plane will still fly but you
may have to hold pressure on the stick to mainrtain level flight.
On my plane, I couldn't trim out the elevator forces in level flight even with
full nose up trim. It flew just fine but I had to hold a little back pressure
on the stick all the time. I solved this problem after the third flight by lowering
the nose of the horizontal tail about half and inch by making and installing
a new set of front attachment brackets. Since each of these airplanes is
hand built and unique, you may find the need to make some minor adjustments. That
is what you will determine in your first few test flights.

I'm curious how many different flap positions people use. Do you put in full
flaps, half then full, 10, 15, full, what? And when do you do what on
approach?

John,
This is a good place to have the stabilizer center line really aligned
with the longeron.
Easier to work out balance and trim in flight if you start there. See
link and place a rule
along the rivet line and then the centerline of the stab. This plane
will fly hands off in nearly
any trimmed for balance condition. Otherwise you'll work against an
easy trim on the elevator.
It could be serious and annoying.

I spoke with Nick about this at Sun'n'Fun. He said it's pretty hard
to determine exactly the level of the horizontal stab, so just come as
close as you can. He didn't seem to think precision was all that
important. As Bryan says, no matter how exact you get it you may
still have to adjust it for your particular airplane, so you might
want to keep this in mind as you shape that aft topskin.

One important warning:
We all have to be sure that the Weight and Balance is correct in our airplane.
Sometimes a wrong (and dangerous) W&B can be compensated with the stabilizer
angle position.... But the bad stability (AFT worse) of the airplane remains.
Lost a good friend pilot this way several years ago in an engine failure at
take off.
