In the early days I may have looked out at the flaps (not easy to do at night), but I normally just moved them by counting seconds and the feel of the aircraft. The only XL I have flown was the exact same way. So I am not planning to use an indicator in XL. -Bruce Johnson- 601XL N601BK (reserved) SLC, UT I'm curious how many different flap positions people use. Do you put in >full >flaps, half then full, 10, 15, full, what? I posted this on the Engine list with only one response. I am collecting parts for a Corvair conversion, hoping to build a 601XL. I found the alternator & regulator that William Wynne suggests on the John Deere site but I'm looking for a better price. It seems to me that some of the tractor supply houses would stock them but I don't know what tractor they are from. Where have you other Corvair guys gotten yours? Does anyone know what tractor they come off of? I'm looking to save as much money as I can, at the same time not skimping on quality parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. But I am still interested in how to seal the fittings... I cut the Y stick just above where it attaches to the aileron control rod. I used 4130 tubing to make the dual sticks and welded the assembly to the stub of the Y stick. For ease of ingress and egress I am using a pin (I call it a pip pen) to connect the dual sticks to the aileron control rod and when removed, the dual sticks simply fold down to the floor. I haven't flown yet, but, setting in the seat the control feels good and I think it will work out fine. I can provide pictures off line if desired Jim Fosse N329F Goreville, IL ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 10:12:25 PM PST US From: "Dave Thompson" Subject: Zenith-List: Air tools & Compressor --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Dave Thompson" Hi Guys, I'm building a Corvair conversion using WW's manual. After I get it running, I plan to purchase a 601XL kit. Meanwhile, I'm tooling up. I got a great deal on an assorted box of "Asian sheet metal air tools"; die grinders, saws, shears, rivet guns/squeezers & stuff. Not all new or of the best quality. I plan to take advantage of them anyway. I know they are cheep, but If I like a tool and it breaks, I'll replace it with a high quality one. My current air compressor is a 1 hp and needs to be upgraded. My question is: What CFM & HP do you guys suggest I look into for my new air compressor? The specs are overwhelming. I've been considering a 5 HP 6.5 CFM @ 90PSI, 120VAC, at about $300.00. Should that be enough for the tools that I'll need? I need to install a dedicated outlet anyway so 220VAC is not an issue. I've got a very small shop and it needs to have wheels. If you don't need 175 psi, single stage compressors give you more volume for the hp. Had to explain the above to MANY plant engineers over my 32 yrs of selling air compressors in the industrial market. Buy the best air compressor you can afford, it will be a tool you will use for life. LOW &SLOW John Bolding" -- Craig
