BlankI am changing props if I can sell mine. I have almost $1000
invested and will take less. It is a 64" three blade Ground adjustable
Warp Drive HP prop with a HP hub and has nickel leading edges. It has
never been flown. The black primer color Warp Drive uses was removed,
then sanded lightly to reveal the carbon fiber pattern. The tips are
painted white, entire blades clear coated with blue pearl in the clear ,
absolutely beautiful! I sent the blades back to Warp Drive after
painting for a re-balance.
The (H)igh (P)ower hub is a SAE-1 (4 3/8") bolt pattern 3/8"x6.
The prop is clockwise rotation from the cockpit. This is a high speed
prop. At 3600 RPM, 80 degrees, it is at 0.883 mach. Of course it can
be used at much slower max speeds.
It was intended for my direct drive Subaru. Before I flew it I changed
to a Harley engine with a re-drive thus I don't need the HP prop setup.
I want to move to lighter longer prop for my 701.
I will make someone a deal. All offers considered. Contact me via
e-mail at lrm01@centurytel.net.

Bruce, I have an indicator on my XL and have never had the time while landing
to try to find it. As you say, if I needed to see it, a quick peek out to the
left would do it. Also, I have found on the XL, flap landings are the rarity.
With any cross wind at all you will not enjoy the ride, and you don't really
need them. By the time you bleed off the speed just short of stall you are
barely moving anyway. Best regards, Bill of Georgia

I agree with Bill. Although I only have about a dozen landings in the xl now I
don't like landing with full flaps. I have decided that my landings are much
better with no flaps or only 10deg flaps. Jack at Fresno- Chandler right now..

All - I flew down from Seattle for this event and had a great time. Sebastien,
Nicholas and Roger were great hosts and it was fun to see the factory demonstrators
(thanks for the ride in the 701 Roger!). The new CNC machine is a beauty.
I even picked up some parts for my 701 while I was there.
I enjoyed meeting William, Grace Ellen, Bill and Mark and listening to William
talk about his passion for the Corvair powerplant. While he has taken some lumps
for being the "Authority", I found him to be very engaging in person and highly
committed to making aviation accessible to people of decent mechanical skills
and a willingness to listen and take advantage of his experience and the
hard work he's put into making the Corvair a viable option.
For those of you who haven't met him, make the effort. He may be the "Authority",

The compressor mentioned below is less than 2HP...120V* 15amp ignores
the power factor of the motor which can be assumed to be about 0.8.
So 120V * 15A *0.8/ 0.746 = 1.9HP motor horse power

had one showing the same 6.4 scfm @ 90 psi, 33 gal. tank but was rated
at 2.2 hp. for $279.99-------- goes to prove not to pay attention to the
"advertised hp" but rather the performance of the unit.----- Again, I am
very pleased with my unit for the price, it does the job very well.

1 hp (electric) = 746 watts
120 volts * 15 amp = 1800 watts.
So your compressor motor is actually only 2.4 HP. This is not
surprising, there is all sorts of weird claims when manufactures (of
almost any kind of power tool) state their horsepower.

List,
Has anybody tied a 912-powered craft to a spring scale to determine "thrust" at
max RPM?
In digging through my extensive assortment of stuff brought home by a pack rat
I found a 0-400 pound spring scale with hooks on both ends........weighs equally
well vertical & horizontal.
Obviously there are variables but it might be interesting to know just how much
"pull" exists during run-up.

Hi Zed,
I don't have your answer regarding static thrust, but I do have a
warning. This can be a misleading piece of information.
Static thrust comes from a combination of engine torque (HP) and
propeller pitch and length. It is OK for looking at the condition of
your engine, but it can kill you if you use it to maximize thrust for
flight. The problem is that the low pitch which works great when the
plane is standing still will not generate any thrust at all after it
reaches a relatively low speed. This means you won't generate good
flying speed even though you have reached a high static thrust. The
long pitch angle that works best in cruise flight will not work well
in the static condition.
This test is similar to measuring the pulling strength in a car in
first gear. It has some value but will not tell you how fast your car will go.
Good luck,
Paul

Its most definatly the inflated number. If you think about it the most
you can get reasonably is about 15A, Yes I know you can get 20A in the
US but the in-rush current on a true 20A motor would probaly pop 20A
panel breakers regularly.
So 15A equates to less than 2Hp on a 120V supply. The max you would get
even on a 240V supply would be aroud 4Hp. Personally I would avoid a
240V machine unless you are sure it will be permanently in one place.
Yes I agree the SCFM number@ 90psi would be a better comparison but even
then you have to read between the lines...I mean what if the SCFM number
is shown at 70psi...Whats the comparison?
All the domestic quality machines are going to run about the same
efficiency so you can get a rough idea on the max amps the thing draws.
I.e 15A= 2HP. 7.5A = 1HP etc.
What we do know is a 15A machine with a 30 Gallon tank is more than
adequate to do everything on an airplane and in the shop.
Incidently, I would be wary of Harbor Freight compressors. I have a
small HF pancake compressor for portable jobs like nail guns etc and it
works great for the $80 I paid for it. Occasionally though it will stall
on start up. This is not what you want if your in the middle of a paint
job, you got to turn it on and forget about it till the end of the day.
As an owner of more HF tools than you can shake a stick at I would say
the compressor is the one place I personally would NOT buy Harbor
Freight.

Hello Listers,
I just wanted to send out a reminder to all of the Listers regarding the new-ish
BBS (Bulletin Board System) Forums that are available at Matronics for the Email
Lists. The BBS Forums give you Web-based access into the same email content
that is generated by the Email Lists. When an email message is posted to
any of the email lists, a copy of the message is also copied to the respective
List forum section on in the BBS Forums. By the same token, when a message is
posted within the BBS Forum interface context, it will also be posted to the
respective email list.
Basically, the BBS Forums give you yet another method of accessing the Matronics
Email List content. Some people prefer email, some prefer web forums; now you
can have it either way or both with the Matronics Lists!
You'll have to register for a login/password on the BBS Forum to _post_ from the
BBS, but you can view message content without registering for an account. To
Register for an account, look for the link at the top of the main BBS Forum
page entitled "Register". Click on it and follow the instructions. Site Administrator
approval will be required (to keep spammers out), but I will try to
get these approved in less than 24 hours.
If you haven't yet taken a look at the Matronics Email List content over on the
BBS Forum, surf on over and take a peek. Its pretty cool. The URL is:
http://forums.matronics.com
I want to stress that the BBS Forums are simply an adjunct to the existing Matronics
Email Lists; another way of viewing and interacting with the Matronics List
content. If you like Email, great. If you like Web Forums, great. If you
like both, great. Its up to you how you view and create your content.
You will also find a URL link at the bottom of this email called Matronics List
Features Navigator. You can click on this link at any time to find URL links
to all of the other great features available on the Matronics site like the Archive
Search Engine, List Browse, List Download, FAQs, Wiki, and lots more.
There is a specific Navigator for each Email List and the link for this specific

List,
Thanks to all for the pointers/web sites, etc, as to the "thrust" produced by a

Having an idea as to the range of values others have experienced is nice to know.
Have any of the Corvair-powered machines managed to squeal the tires on takeoff?
Or is that the Harley that does that?
Regards,

Corvair-powered planes are so fast they land before they take-off.

List,
Thanks to all for the pointers/web sites, etc, as to the "thrust" produced
by a 912.
Having an idea as to the range of values others have experienced is nice to
know.

BlankWhat's the deal about painting prop tips? I thought it was
required. It is on the EAA check list. I asked IVOPROP about it and
they said not to do it, it would affect the balance. I can't find a FAR
about it. When I had my gyro inspected, the DAR told me to paint them.
"Are the propeller tips painted for visibility?" That's off the EAA
check list.
Do we or don't we? Anyone know for sure?

All I know is that when I fly with corvair power my useful load goes way
down due to the fact that my wallet is so fat from all the money I have
saved...LOL
I'll take that trade off any day.

father did.

I've been on hand for two Excalibur initial airworthiness inspections...
neither had the prop tips painted... both were certified without any hassle
about painting the tips..... both of us yell "Clear Prop!" before start
up... neither of us have hit anything or anyone with the prop. Well actually
my prop hit a home run with the tennis ball as it blew off the exhaust at
start up...... twice so far. Found it both times after a bit of a search. No
charges were pressed. Four runs batted in.
