When my 701 is finished I'll put a dedicated unit in it. Probably a Garmin 296. The AW map on my Ipaq worked just fine. I liked it a lot. It does all they claimed. Refresh was a litttle slow but the Ipaq was a 2002 model. What turned me off was that it was installed in volatile memory and if I let it sit for a month the batterry would die and lose the AW map. Soooo I had to keep reinstalling it. You can move it to a non volatile area of memory but the installation has to be just right. I personally think it was too much trouble. I have an older black and white unit that I havn't used for years and I know that I can turn it on tomorrow and it will pick up 3 satellites and give my location within 2 minutes. Maybe the pocket PC's they make today are better in this respect, probably. Cut a long story short. Their customer support is VERY good. At Oshkosh and Sun Fun they update = any Controlvision unit for free. The display and its operation keep me using it. The thing that gave me trouble at first was the fact that I'm not = computer literate and downloading updates always hit a snag. Solved it = by having the program loaded to a flash card and keeping it with the = unit. If the battery on the pda runs down it dumps the program and must be = reloaded, big problem for me if doing it on the computer ,no problem if = using the flash card. Takes about 5 min. For a nominal charge I got Control Vision to burn a card for my wife's = PDA as well so I can carry a backup for less than $50. I use an Ipac PDA, a larger screen on a tablet computer would be worth = the money. I don't know about alodine. Allot of airframes are bonded (glued sheet metal) construction. I wonder if they have any problems. Nick at ZAC didn't like the idea of = drilling holes in the spar web. I am running as much as possible = beneath the canopy sills. I am running the hydraulic lines and flap = wiring through the holes in the forward, outboard seat bottoms ( in = separate conduits). I was able to get the elevator trim and tail light = wires under the l/h canopy sill. I ran the comm and GPS antenna cables = under the r/h canopy sill. I used spiral wrap or clear plastic tubing = to protect the cables and hoses. I have not run the pitot/static lines = yet, but plan to bring them through the same hole (in the seat bottom) = as the brake line uses. Hopefully the upholstery will cover most of = this up. I seriously considered making a tunnel under the floor to run the large = amount of wires and tubes, It would have been nice if ZAC provided some = means of penetrating the spar. I wonder how they ran the wiring on the = demonstrator? I really like the Anywhere Map program and the capabilities of the PDA - the MIO even has a built-in street map GPS that comes with it free - but it is not a very bright screen, and is less than optimal in bright daylight. You can still see it, but it's not nearly as bright as I want it to be. I was also given an "AvMap GeoPilot" (Sporty's exclusive) that is much brighter, but has fewer cool options, no street map, and is not a PDA. I use the GeoPilot for flying and keep the MIO/AnywhereMap in my flight bag as a backup and as a street map GPS. (The MIO PDA also does Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and hooks in to other computers for email and web-browsing). I have thought about selling the MIO a few times, and might be persuaded to sell it at a reduced price - but I kind of like having a backup and the street map, too. I've had it for a year and have subscription updates through September. It runs under the control parts for the center yoke and rudder cables. I was able to use the round, split-loom clamps to hold it out of the way of the controls. I plan to tie-wrap the tubing to this also to hold it out of the way of the controls. I have a lot of wires in my yoke for PTT, trim tabs, and frequency switch that are contained in split loom also and tie-wrapped to the yoke. I'll try to take a photo of the loom, etc. this afternoon and post it. Made it a ton easier. You have to fish a special wrench inside the center spar to hold the nuts for the bolts that attach the stick brackets. Also, the rear bracket that holds the center control tube is different from the center yoke tube and has to be bolted on. So easy from the sides, a difficult event from the top I suppose. On the fuselage I recommend you hold off as long as possible before riveting skins as the ability to get in and under for instruments, wiring, cables and plumbing is greatly limited once all is nailed down. It is an interior corrosion treatment that works itself between all parts. Alodine will "kill" corrosion. Mechanically clean the area first, apply the cleaner, wash, apply the Alodine and wash.
