I got tired of the rip off of paying more for a replacement batterey than the entire drill, charger and two batteries cost originally. I decided to get some commonality working in my favor. I bought a Dewalt 1/2" 18 volt drill with 2 batteries and a charger. Then I saw a package deal on six Dewalt tools plus 2 more batteries and another charger that included a mail in offer for one more tool of my choice. Then I picked up a couple more tools individually later on, all of which use the same 18 volt extended life batteries. I now have virtually all the cordless tools I want, plus six batteries and two chargers so that I'm never down, even on a big project. The batteries are pricey but not robbery and are perpetually available online on Ebay and elsewhwere. Cordless drills offer slow speed ranges that are nice for some airplane building operations, the 1/2" drills have plenty enough torque and they don't gobble up a lot of SCFM fom a small air compressor that runs the chip blower and rivet gun satisfactorily. If you believe that you will continue to be able to buy batteries for the Chinese tools, go for it. I like the Dewalt tools. I would agree that it can't mean an aerodynamic stall as that should virtually no effect on the engine. It is probably not suitable for aerobatics, but are any of the engines commonly used in a 601? I just returned from 3 hours of shopping for what I = consider to be the best deal available in our area. This is long, but = it's worth reading because you can probably empathize- 1. I couldn't find one CORDLESS drill made in the states. Plenty of = corded, but no cordless. The only drill offered that wasn't made in = China was the DeWalt, which is made in Mexico. Considering the DeWalt = came from the home of craftsmen like Gary Gower, I would now own a = DeWalt if it weren't for the fact that it had a lower torque spec, twice = the charging time, and nowhere near the warranty. 2. If the US is morphing into a service economy, we're in big = trouble. I originally picked out a different model from a different = vendor and placed my choice on the (Unattended) checkout line. I waited = for a good 5 minutes, coughing frequently, pulling my credit card out = and throwing it on the counter, etc. Several sales people glanced my = way, then turned around and continued talking to whoever it was they = were talking to.=20 Finally, a salesman came out of the back room to the register and = wanted to know what I wanted. I told him I'd made my choice- run my card = and I'm out of here.=20 His reply was that they were busy, he'd only come up to look up a = price for someone else and I'd have to wait.=20 I figured that if that was the type of treatment I get trying to = SPEND my money, imagine what kind of treatment I'd get trying to get = service! Needless to say, I went elsewhere. 3. My final decision was based on specs and warranty rather than (As = you will soon find out) price.=20 After comparing Ryobi, Craftsman, Makita, B+D, Skil, DeWalt, and = Milwaukee, (Among a half dozen no-name brands) I came across Ridgid. The = hook is they're offering a lifetime warranty on everything including = batteries as part of the original purchase price. In addition, they have = the fastest recharge time of any brand I looked at (20-30 minutes) and = the highest torque. The salesman said that I had to have two sales slips = made out and pick up a registration form from the cashier. Refer to (2). I get to the checkout, and they try to sell me an = extended warranty. I told them what the salesman said about the lifetime = warranty and they were clueless. I told them that if I didn't get the = lifetime warranty, I didn't want the drill. We don't know what you're = talking about, yada, yada, yada. When the cash register opened after the = guy BEHIND me makes his transaction, guess what's in the till! On the way home it occured to me that the drill I just bought had a = 1/2" chuck and probably wouldn't take drills less than 1/8". I'm driving = through the gamelands and spook up a couple of eagles- I think they were = Ospreys. I have a superstition that seeing big birds is a good luck = omen.=20 Got home and the 1/2" chuck will accept bits down to 1/32. =20 Ridgid model R840011 1/2" chuck cordless drill w/2 batteries, 1/2 = hour charger, carrying bag, 3 year regular and lifetime limited = warranty, including batteries- $189.95 at Bone Depot.=20 Wow, my battery's already charged! Back to work on the garanger. = Good building! Most of the cells will be Pansonic or some other battery cell from the eastern rim... probably China. One can either go to a place like Batteries Plus and have them replaced or Harbor Freight where they are currently $9.95. Your DeWalt will probably bounce better than the HF models. That is their big advantage. ________________________________ Message 10 ____________________________________ Time: 04:55:43 PM PST US From: Matt Dralle Subject: Zenith-List: List Enclosure Support --> Zenith-List message posted by: Matt Dralle Dear Listers, Over the years, I have resisted the urge to enable enclosure support on the Matronics Lists for a number of reasons relating to performance, capacity, capability, and security. However, its now 2006 and most everyone using email these days is on an email client that, at some level, supports the viewing and handling of enclosures. I get a fair amount of email each month from people on the various Lists asking why their posts of this or that picture didn't go through. Back quite a while ago by popular request, I enabled enclosure support for a few Lists such as the RV10-List, Kolb-List, and the Tailwind-List. Contrary to my fears, there really hasn't been any significant issues on these Lists relating to the advent of enclosure support and for the most part, members have policed themselves well with respect to the size of things they have posted. Having enclosures enabled on some Lists and not others has given me a fair amount of headaches with respect to filtering messages and content since the formats are often quite different between a typical MIME encoded message and a generic plain-text message. The spammers are getting more cleaver all the time and are constantly trying to thwart my best efforts at keeping them from posting to the Lists. So, for these reasons, I've have decided to go ahead and enable limited enclosure posting on all of the email Lists at Matronics. This will not only increase the utility of the Lists, but will afford me a better opportunity to filter out the chaff. Here are some of the features and limits of enclosures on the Matronics Lists: 1) Enclosures will only be posted to the Real Time version of the Lists. 2) Enclosures will NOT be included in the Daily Digest version of the Lists. 3) Enclosures WILL BE forwarded on to the BBS Forum Web site. 4) Enclosures will NOT be appended to the Archives. 5) Enclosures will NOT be available in the List Browse feature. 6) Only the following file types and extensions will be allowed: jpg, bmp, gif, txt, xls, pdf, and doc All other enclosures types will be rejected and email returned to sender. The enclosure types listed above are relatively safe from a virus standpoint and don't pose a particularly large security risk. 7) !! All incoming enclosures will be scanned for viruses prior to posting to the List. This is done in real time and will not slow down the process of posting the message !! Here are some rules for posting enclosures. Failure to abide by these rules could result in the removal of a subscriber's email address from the Lists. 1) Pay attention to what you are posting!! Make sure that the files you are enclosing aren't HUGE (greater that 1MB). Remember that there are still people checking they're email via dial up modem. If you post 30MB worth of pictures, you are placing an unnecessary burden on these folks and the rest of us, for that matter. 2) SCALE YOUR PICTURES DOWN!!! I don't want to see huge 3000 x 2000 pictures getting posted that are 3 or 4MB each. This is just unacceptable. Use a program such as Photoshop to scale the picture down to something on the order of 800 x 600 and try to keep the file size to less-than 200KB, preferably much less. Microsoft has a really awesome utility available for free that allows you to Right-Click on a picture in Explorer and automatically scale it down and resave it. This is a great utility - get it, use it! http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Look for the link "Image Resizer" 3) !! This would seem to go without saying, but I'll say it anyway. Do not post anything that would be considered offensive by your grandmother. And you know what I'm saying; I don't want to see anything even questionable. !! 4) REMEMBER THIS: If you post a 1MB enclosure to a List with 1000 members subscribed, your 1MB enclosure must be resent 1000 times amounting to 1MB X 1000 = 1 Gigabyte of network traffic!! BE CAREFUL and BE COURTEOUS! I hope everyone will enjoy the added functionality of enclosures. Please police yourself and use good judgement when posting messages with enclosures using the guidelines I've outlined above.
