Almost :-) I don't want to count how many "Argon-bottles" it had taken...
One 30 liter "bottle" cost's about 100U$ from AGA reseller.

Subject: | Silly Putty Welding |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: N5SL <nfivesl@yahoo.com>
Fellow Builders:
I've been doing quite a bit of welding while building
my canopy arms the last few days. I rarely use my MIG
(wire-feed) welder but yesterday I had a chance to use
it and it came in real handy.
I'm working on my canopy latches and each one has
three springs inside that I thought would disintegrate
if I tried to weld near them. I know that if I used
my gas welder, the time to heat up the parts would
ruin the springs. This left me with the idea of using
the wire-feed welder a little at a time to avoid
building up too much heat.
I still didn't feel comfortable welding near the
springs so I decided to try something. I spotted my
handy, Silly Putty egg on the shelf and decided to use
the putty to shield the springs. It worked great!
The springs weren't even discolored after welding
milimeters away from them.
I posted picturs here:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/6_6_06_Canopy_Latch1.JPG
and here:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/6_6_06_Canopy_Latch2.JPG
You can see the residue from the Silly Putty on the
second picture near the spring. I do have less Silly
Putty now for hole spotting because it gets burned up
in the process, but the springs are still working and
I'm one step closer to installing my canopy.
Happy Building,
Scott Laughlin

Actually, the redneck comedy of Ron White is more appropriate for experimental
aircraft builders. Consider the routine about a commuter airliner flying along
at the speed of smell, and the observation that the second engine is good to
get you all the way to the scene of the crash. If fact you make such good time
on that one engine that you'll beat the paramedics to the crash site by almost
an hour.

Scott, good idea. I have used wet red clay as a cold pak to protect threads
and such when welding. Also protects from metal splatter. Course you folks up
north may not have any red clay ?? I get mine from the back yard. I heard from
Ron D that he received his LRI from you. Are you still making them ? I have a
new hole in my panel and an AOA LRI would be a fine addition. Hope to hear
from you, Best regards, Bill of Georgia

I could not determine if the detail gun is indeed the true HVLP gun or
not...It says its HVLP but then lists the required pressure as 43psi.
This would defiantly make it NOT HVLP.
Notice the $60 detail gun (90978-2vga) list the required pressure as
29psi...Which is what my big HVLP gun requires.
Do you know for sure this is the HVLP gun?...I have a friend going HF
this evening...:)

In reading this further I see they list the Cap pressure (which ssume is
nozzle pressure) of 10psi...I think this is what defines and HVLP as an
HVLP gun!
OK I'll have my buddy pick one up and I'll try it out...I have the
borrowed one so it would be a good side by side comparison. I should
have some trim I could paint tomorrow so I will report back on how well
it works...If its like the one I borrowed its just so sweet..More like
an airbrush than a spray gun...:)

I noticed that when spraying a lot (and breathing the compressor air),
the compressor is working hard and the receiver tank gets warm. This
means I will get water at the gun when it comes to painting really big
things like the fuse or wings.
I will be buying the HF 5 gallon ai tank and welding on a couple of
fittings. With a garden hose set to trickle over the outside of the tank
this will make a superb water trap!

No Frank, I don't know for sure. I would think though with it being gravity
fed, and smaller nozzle orifice implies lower liquid flow, you could get by
with much less than 43psi.

Actually no you won't...Well "getting away with" is not a term that
works when pinting an airplane. Remember I only got good results by
turning UP the pressure. The 20Oz gun requires (they say) 28psi...I got
marginal to poor results (i.e BAD orange peel) at 28psi and excellent
results at 50 psi.
I tried 55psi this morning but the results did not improve so I will go
back to 50psi from now on.
The touch up gun I also run at 50psi and the results were just stunning.

Degrees or conibears?
Having 3 degrees just proves that by the time you graduate with one,
the bar has been raised and you have to get another. Having 3 conibears
on your workbench means you still have all your tools, and there are a
batch of moochers walking around in casts.
Sheesh! When I hit the wall (Or more accurately, the size of the
basement door) I couldn't wait to get started on the garanger. Now that
I've hit the wall on the garanger (Waiting and waiting and waiting for a
garage door) I can't wait to get back to work on the plane.
With the entire list as my witness, I swear I will never contract
out anything I know I can do myself. If I would have just had the pad
poured and let it go at that, I'd be done by now.

Tracy-
GARagehANGER. I plan on trailering the plane to a local airport and
putting it up in the communal hangar during flying season, then bringing
it home at the end of the season for annual, etc. We really only have 6
months of flying around here, except for the uncomfortable kind. If I
wanted to taxi down the road and fly off my neighbor's field, I could do
it in a 701, but not a 601. I TOLD you people I live out in the middle
of nowhere! Plan on building Larry Mac's wing installation jig.
I designed and built my own home with no other help than my father
in law, and he was 70 at the time. Best alarm clock you could ask for-
couldn't have done it without him.
Contracted out the foundation (I can't lay a block to save my life),
and built everything else. Got the building permit on May 17, and moved
in November 19th the same year. Missed 4 days of work, as I remember.
The last gargage door I installed (About 3 years ago), it took me a
weekend, including the opener.
Uh, think about it. If you're crazy enough to take on building your
own plane, a garage door is a piece of cake.

I got the Superfil From ACS. It was left over from my RV. (Its also great
for hiding rivet gun smiley's.)

Even the tips on the Cessna's don't fit to perfection. The Superfil is
probably an excellent idea as the composite tips and the metal stab will
have differing flexibilities and the Superfil will probably protect from
later cracking of the tips.

Tim-
I think we all experienced that problem. On mine I got as close as
possible, filled with Poly-Fibre Superfil and then sanded to a "pleasing
contour." Not flying yet but it sure looks good.

Michael,
Here is a picture of one of my fuel senders. I didn't have to remove
anything to get it to fit under the skin on my 601XL. The part is a
Volkswagen sender supplied as part of my wing kit from ZAC and uses a
flat spade electrical connector.
Good luck,

We be a haven lots a dese critters in the desert area of Apple Valley,
Calif. We calls'em Mojave Green and they are ONLY 12 times as deadly as an
everyday sidewinder & unlike most snakes they WILL come after ya'll.
Bad news with a bad attitude. Local paper runs a full section on them every
summer.
'bout 6 years ago I was so low I walked under one with my top hat on and
never touched the belly skin. But I'm kinda better now. KABONG Do Not
