I rarely use my MIG (wire-feed) welder but yesterday I had a chance to use it and it came in real handy. I'm working on my canopy latches and each one has three springs inside that I thought would disintegrate if I tried to weld near them. I know that if I used my gas welder, the time to heat up the parts would ruin the springs. This left me with the idea of using the wire-feed welder a little at a time to avoid building up too much heat. I still didn't feel comfortable welding near the springs so I decided to try something. I spotted my handy, Silly Putty egg on the shelf and decided to use the putty to shield the springs. It worked great! The springs weren't even discolored after welding milimeters away from them. I posted picturs here: http://www.cooknwithgas.com/6_6_06_Canopy_Latch1.JPG and here: http://www.cooknwithgas.com/6_6_06_Canopy_Latch2.JPG You can see the residue from the Silly Putty on the second picture near the spring. I do have less Silly Putty now for hole spotting because it gets burned up in the process, but the springs are still working and I'm one step closer to installing my canopy. This means I will get water at the gun when it comes to painting really big things like the fuse or wings. I will be buying the HF 5 gallon ai tank and welding on a couple of fittings. With a garden hose set to trickle over the outside of the tank this will make a superb water trap! Remember I only got good results by turning UP the pressure. The 20Oz gun requires (they say) 28psi...I got marginal to poor results (i.e BAD orange peel) at 28psi and excellent results at 50 psi. I tried 55psi this morning but the results did not improve so I will go back to 50psi from now on. The touch up gun I also run at 50psi and the results were just stunning. I plan on trailering the plane to a local airport and putting it up in the communal hangar during flying season, then bringing it home at the end of the season for annual, etc. We really only have 6 months of flying around here, except for the uncomfortable kind. If I wanted to taxi down the road and fly off my neighbor's field, I could do it in a 701, but not a 601. I TOLD you people I live out in the middle of nowhere! Plan on building Larry Mac's wing installation jig. I designed and built my own home with no other help than my father in law, and he was 70 at the time. Best alarm clock you could ask for- couldn't have done it without him. Contracted out the foundation (I can't lay a block to save my life), and built everything else. Got the building permit on May 17, and moved in November 19th the same year. Missed 4 days of work, as I remember. The last gargage door I installed (About 3 years ago), it took me a weekend, including the opener. Uh, think about it. If you're crazy enough to take on building your own plane, a garage door is a piece of cake.
