If you are using MS Outlook you can just download the headers first and than
decide what you want to delete right off the server and what you want to
download. Since I've been doing this I've noticed a significant drop in
SPAM as a side benefit.

The pictures attached give an idea of what was done in this case.
Though I don't believe the spring gear has any advantage
due to its weight and light attachment if you repeat XL structure. You
damage the spring gear and you destroy the fuselage
and all.

You would think Zenith would be happy that people still opt for their
older designs and clean up the loose ends in those designs.
History is simply repeating itself. Cessna tried stopping the production
of Skyhawks and failed. Who could imagine that the glass panel, 180HP 172 of
today was directly related to a rag-wing, taildragging, electrical system
optional 125HP plane introduced in (?) 1946.
I may be wrong, but I think there are a couple of HDS/Corvairs flying.

Morning Cory,
Buying a used homebuilt? I suppose everyone has a list of
'must-haves' and 'don't wants', but there is one item that should be
paramount on everyone's list. Is the airplane a high-quality machine?
That it, did the builder put in the time and effort to build a safe,
well put together aircraft, or did they rush through the job as SO many
seem to.
I have seen some homebuilt aircraft out there that I wouldn't let my
mother-in-law fly! It has always amazed me how many people exhibit
shoddy workmanship in a machine that's going to carry them into the air.
Kind of makes you wonder if they had selling in mind all through the
build process.
Just my two cents. :)

Since my plane was going to be out of commission while I get another engine, I
thought I would work on my annual inspection. I had a little bit of a blue stain
around the fuel sender. Good time to fix that, especially since my wings are
not on the plane. When I filled the tank to test it, I could see fuel seeping
from under the ribs and out the bottom of the nose skin. I had to pull the
nose skin off to see where it was coming from. It appears that the cork had soaked
up some water and I have at least 5 holes that have been caused from corrosion.
Some of them are actually on the top of the tank.
I think the only reason I did not notice it before, was because the fit between
the cork , wing skin, and tank was pretty tight. When we took the wings off to
transport the plane home, this wing was upside down on the trailer. I'm sure
that shook things loose, opening up the holes. I'll have to pull the other tank
to see if it has the same problem.
For those who are building, maybe it would be a good idea to prime and paint your
tanks before closing up your wings. I had not done this, but will this time.
For now, I'm trying to decide if I want to make fiberglass tanks like the ones
shown on CH601.org, or do like Carlos Sa did with his riveted tanks. I also see
that Bill Morelli had to repair his tanks in December and used something other
than cork. Bill, Are you still happy with the foam? Does it have a brand name?
I want to make sure I pick up the same stuff. Got any pictures?

Randy-- sorry to hear about your fuel tank leaks. Could you please share a few
more details with the group?
Did you buy your tanks from Zac ? .032-- 6061-T6 ? How many layers of cork
did you put on/ around the tank? Did you "slosh" the inside of the tanks
with sloshing compound ( not that it would help, if chaffing was the cause)?
Do you think any of the leaks were caused by chaffing ? How much trouble
to open the wing ? Do you have to open up the complete length of the wing or
does ZAC allow you to cut the skin just outbd of the fuel tank so as you only
have open about 5' of the wing?
I know ZAC says to use .032--- 6061-T6. I had my tanks built from .040-------
5052-H32. I would have used .050 if I thought my brake could have bent it
ok. After bending the .040, I am sure my brake would have bent the .050 just
fine and the .050 is what I'd use if doing it again. .050 would have been easier
for the welder also.

There's always an early 601 at the fly-ins that hasn't been polished or
done with the care that I'd like to see, but they
are repeatedly there with the functional utility of a back yard swing.
Not always pretty, but still flying after 8-10 years.
If you need to see some nice work, just look into the Zenith gallery
pictures and there are lots of interesting and well done
601s on display there, or make it to the Open House in Mexico, MO in
August. Nearly always a couple of show stopper
quality 601HDS there. Nice as any RV or GlassAir in quality workmanship
and paint. These guys have me so self-conscious
that I'm now painting my 601HDS after 85-hours flying time. Should take
about 100-hours more than if I'd painted it before
flying it.
Frank, you might try e-bay as it has a broad audience as well.

We sold our 601 HDS in about a two weeks after the ad in Trade-A-
Plane appeared. Of the ten plus serious queries received most
pertained to the Sport Plane status. Most seem not to be aware that
we were the manufacturer, not Zenair, and therefore it was in our
purview to declare its status.

Guys,
If my memory serves me right I think that William Wynne purchased his 601XL
with the fuselage partially built. I think he also said that it is the
prototype taildragger. It was purchased after the XL was released. That's
most likely why he chose the XL. He told me that taildraggers are his
preference, but has nothing against tricycle gear. I also think that I read
somewhere that the engine mount points are the same on the HD and the XL.
Thus it will use the same engine mount. I could be wrong on that point. As
Cdngoose said before, talk to William about the Corvair/HD combo. I'm sure
he'll have some good advice.

While they say that the Aerocarb is not succeptible to
carb icing, the Monnets wouldn't bet the farm on it.
When I purchased their custom filter for my Aerocarb,
it came with a legal disclaimer saying that the filter
is only for ground testing, and the carb should not be
operated in flight without the use of carb heat.

I have purchased a great deal of tools from Harbor Freight. As everyone
knows, some of their stuff is, let me say not the best. I haven=92t had
a
great deal of luck with most of their power tools. I=92d shy away from
their
air compressors.
I agree with the other guys that you might look into as large a
compressor
that you can afford. There is a great deal of other air tools that you
might
want to use in the future. The way I look at it, it=92s one of the major
tools
in my shop. I remember when I purchased my first 7=94 table saw just out
of
high school. It was the cheapest I could find. It did the job but not
very
well. I soon replaced it with a full size 10=94 from Sears. I still have
it &
love it 30 years later.
Don=92t make a mistake and under buy.
With the advice from the other guys here and other research, last week I
purchased the Husky VT6315 from Home Depot for just under $400.00. They
also
let me make payments. It looks exactly like the Campbell/housefield but
red
rather than blue. It was a little cheaper in price too. I think they
make it
for Home Depot. It was one of the largest I could find at 120VAC and on
wheels. It has a 26 gal tank and is belt driven which makes it much
quieter
than my old direct drive =93pancake=94. They claim it is 5 HP but we
know that=92s
peak so it=92s really about 2 or 3HP. One of the best features to me is
that
it is upright so it has the same footprint as my 1HP framer=92s
=93pancake=94
compressor (I have a very small shop 10=92 X 35=92). I don=92t have a
kit yet so
I=92ve just played around with it so far. However, I haven=92t had any
trouble
using my die grinders, panel saw, drill or =BD=94 impact. With the 26
gal tank,
it doesn=92t run very often.
When researching, I used the CFM @ 90PSI to compare. Look for the
highest
CFM. Belt drive is usually quieter than direct drive. Also, try to put
it on
its own circuit without an extension cord. That way it will not be
dragged
down by other things on the same circuit. That can lesson its
performance
and weaken the motor over time.
I purchased a 12=94 whip hose with swivel and an in-line pressure
regulator
ball valve for my riveter from HF. I think they will be handy.
One last thing: Don=92t forget to get the nose pieces of your riveter
modified
per Zenith=92s specs. They did mine for free at the rudder workshop.
