Hi folks
I am thinking of polishing my ZodiacXL with Nuvite (I just like the look and ...
it is lightweight :D).
What is your opinion in corrosion resistance of a polished aluminium plane (instead
of paint). I will fly my Zodiac in western Europe (not close to sea-coastline,
but sometimes rainy weather).
Any advice?

I saw a fellow once who polished his prop. After that he had to carry
polishing rags and polish with him every where he went. I would only polish
if you are planning on something similar to a clear lacquer finish.

Ahhhh......thanks to the fine fellow who brought up the Polished Aluminum subject.
Now maybe the discussion will turn toward the fuel savings realized from not hauling
the weight of all that paint.
As somebody mentioned, there is the Polishing Rag Penalty.....baggage compartment
will be full of rags and cans of metal polish, no room for beer.
Is there an on-line "calculator" to approximate the weight/fuel savings?
Will a folding stepladder fit inside the aircraft?
Does Elbow Grease come in aerosol cans?
What is the medical term for the Tennis Elbow resulting from this endeavor?
Which color Scotch Brite pad is correct for a shiny finish?
Will the sudden appearance of all these flashy objects result in increased UFO
sightings?
Will Bolt Torque discussions decrease?
Idle minds need the answers to these important questions.

Dave,
Thanks to you and all the other respondents. The
dimensions are slightly larger than what I would like.
My shop is a shed that is roughly 8 x 20, plus I have
a one car garage that I would like to keep it as a car
garage as much as I can. Other than that, the Husky
VT6315 seems to be one of the best choice for the
price/performance. If I can squeeze it in and move it
out every time I’m working, I’ll go for
this one.

Hello, Jari
Not a lot - it looks and behaves much like regular yellow paint - of course, it
is rather thin, as it was meant to be sprayed...

Just wondering... again... When rest of us uses primer, what has it's
hardener
(phosphor or equilevant) separately and requires 50%/50% mixing with paint,
it wont last more than 8-24 hours. After that, this mix is ruined.
Partially from
contacting with air.
So, when you open spray can, all of butane etc. will flow out, and air will
go in.
What happens to primer?

Martin:
You inquired about polishing your aircraft with Nuvite. We used it
with our 601 HDS and had great success. It took about 50 hours using
all three polishes but we only did it once in five years with the
exception of the leading edges which would get an application about
once a year.
Our aircraft was hangared the entire time and the Denver area is very
dry and corrosion is not usually a problem. Our post-flight included
thoroughly wetting a towel and wiping the bugs off the leading
edges. We immediately followed that by wiping it down with a dry
towel. Total time each post-flight=about 5 minutes.
The only down side to polished aluminum is that it is difficult to
see when airborne in comparison to a painted aircraft.

The other disadvantage to a polished plane is that it shows the ripples
and "smiles" in the skins more than a painted plane. Given the quality
of my construction I am thinking of painting mine camouflage :-)
If you want to see two examples of (mostly) polished XLs take a look at
William Wynne's and Phil Maxson's. William lives in Florida and does
not appear to be worried about corrosion:

I'll be there, but only as a spectator unless someone wants to help me move
the workshop 20 miles north for a few days.
Will there be a North West Zenith builders dinner or get-together?

All-
Ever since I went to XP around the first of the year I've had
problems. You think you're talking to a lister 1on1 and you wind up on
the site (And vice versa). You click on a link and the computer crashes.
Etc., etc.
Turned on my computer tonight and went to delete the obvious junk
mail. Crash. Lost everyone's posts for 2 days.
Called my ISP and talked to someone who (Hopefully)knew what they're
doing.
He said to burn out Outlook Express and reinstall. To make a long
story shorter, the only way of getting rid of OE/XP is to use the
install disc. I burned out the old version (Backup your .wab files
first) and reinstalled.
So far, at least I'm back on the site.
Hope this is the end of it, and hope this helps anyone experiencing
similar problems.
Bill

Well, you should stop clicking on all those porn sites, Bill... Ha ha.
Seriously, invest in a good spyware program like Web Root's Spysweeper or Ad-Aware.
Most of your problems are caused by things that get downloaded to your computer
from either email or web links. I've been running XP on over a dozen
computers, a number of which I routinely use for email and web browsing, and have
found XP to be by far the most stable version of Windows ever. Make sure
that you have XP Service Pack 2 installed too and that you keep your Windows Updates
up to date. Weekly is not too often. Also, keep a good virus program
like Norton Antivirus installed and up to date. You can never be too up to date.
And never run without them installed "just for a little while". There are
so many ways to be attacked these days, that even an hour without protection
will probably yield you infected with something. Windows Service Pack 2 has
a really good built in firewall now, and you should run this all the time without
question.

Bill,

I didn't send my initial response to this - too
irritated. This is the calmer response after a 24
hour cool down. I even took out the expletives. No,
I do not admit that the gear is about the worst place
to deviate from the plans. I would say that the wing
spar, or the control surfaces would probably be a
slightly more catastrophic failure, should something
get too "Experimental." You are correct in that I did
not build a scaled model. As I said in the original
post, there is already a flying example of the design.
Will that meet your "Proof of concept" criterion? I
guess I assumed that full scale and operational would
do it.
Thank you so much for not literally saying "I
told you so." That would have simply been rude. It
may have been equally constructive while utilizing
substantially less bytes though.

Uhmmm, I'm a list member and I'll be there later in the week, but I am far
from being a current zenith builder or flyer.
The 701s (which is what I'm interested in) usually are a little rare at
Arlington. Would like to see a few more. I was down at the Golden West
Fly-in in California last week and was able to get a good look at a couple
of examples. Hopefully it will be a little better at Arlington this year.

Another way to provide some extra safety is to use Firefox (
http://www.mozilla.com ) as your web browser. By design Firefox does not
allow "ActiveX controls" to run, and suppresses pop-up ads. Internet
Explorer 7 Beta 2 will also try to protect you against "phishing" sites.
For antivirus AntiVir ( http://www.free-av.com ) is a good choice and free (
as in beer ). I also suggest Ad-Aware (
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ ) to get rid of malevolent
programs.
And if you are still having problems, you can always turn to Microsoft
OneCare ( http://www.windowsonecare.com/ ) for these tools.

In addition to the other suggestions: if you think Outlook Express (your
