Hello Gary and all,
I found this link from Meguiar Company where you can buy the clay to
remove over spray.
http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/megc2000.html
You can even buy the system from the company with the soap and wax.
http://www.performancemotorcare.com/acatalog/Clay_Bars2.html
I used the clay from my painter and am not sure where he bought it, but
this should be the similar product and effect.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Johann G.

Thanks everyone for your help with my 701 trim question. I really appreciate your

Hi Dave,
I would really appreciate it if you could email me a copy of the plans too. Although
I'm flying my 601HDS, I'm also working on a BD-4, so it would come in real
handy about now.
Thanks!

If anyone needs an inexpensive bending brake that actually works go to the
CH601XL group on yahoo. I've posted plans for an all metal 8 foot brake that
requires no welding. It cost under $75 to build. And for all you critics
that say it can't work...I bent my flap and aileron skins and long "L"
angles and they all came out great. It does work and that's a fact.
I can also email the plans complete with color photos in Adobe PDF format.
The file is about 2.5 MB so make sure your email server will allow you to
receive files that large.

Hello list members.
I am happy again. The cleaning of the paint over spray was a success using the
"over spray clay" method, as suggested by Frank Hinde and Tom L.
This stuff is great. Not much rubbing is required, just a few strokes across the
surface with some light soapy liquid, and all the over spray is gone. You can
feel when you start the rub, where the surface is rough at first, and then smooth
as a babys a.....
If you ever need to remove this kind of "buddy" mistake, this is the method.
Just wanted you all to know.
Thank you,

Now, talking as a newbie in this matter, because I have never heard
before about that "Clay", I will appreciate some leads to get info in
internet.
We have always used 1,500 wet sanding and polish for years to get over
spray off our work..
Glad you got it off, Johan, 1,500 sanding and then polish (once the
paint is dry for weeks) is a hard time but also works great.
By the way, we polished our airplane this Saturday, rained in the
night, so the grass strip was wet. We polished before the Mexico -
Argentina soccer game, then wax it when the game was finished : the
plane looks great.
Soccer results saturday Mex 1 Argentina 2.
Thanks a lot in advance.

How do you like working on the BD-4? I am also interested in possibly
building that plane. Are you building a kit or scratch building? How is the factory
support and the plans? Are you going with a auto conversion or certified
engine? Are you working with TVA, and how is their support?
Thanks for your input

Dear friends,
yesterday, I took my niece out for a ride in my CH 601 HDs with side
tilting canopy. It was very hot yesterday afternoon and we had runway 08
in operation, which requires me to taxi all the way down the runway. In
order no to sweat too much undernath the canopy I decided to skip the
point "close canopy and engage canopy locks" in my checklist until we
were ready to take off. You probably can guess: shortly after take off I
realized, that the canopy hooks on the left side were not fully engaged
and the canopy locks were not engaged. After some fideling I was able to
engage the hooks and the locks - without my passenger even noticing,
that something was wrong.
that was the last drop to push me to the decision: I wont to convert to
the forward tilting canopy. Shouldn't be a big deal. Last Sun'n Fun I
looked up the mechanism of the forward tilting canopy in detail. I have
two questions, though:
- What type of gas springs are used (length, force)?
- Where can I get the locking mechanism and how exactly does the opening
from the outside work?
Thanks

I thought the Savannah did not use jury struts, so even if the main strut
connection was the same between the two the amount of stressed placed on the
701's connection would be less... right?

More or less. Still, jury struts wont help with straight pull and push
movement, what
this aluminium "upper strut fitting" have to endure.

Hi;
If you see a significant change in the height that the top plates stick
up above the skin, inspect the bungees carefully. In my case,in 12
years, I have only had to replace 1 of the bungees on each side. The
others were fine and still are.
The trike drivers will have to replace the nose gear bungee much more
frequently. Ho! Ho!

Thilo,
On my Annual Inspection process sheets dated May 2005, the gap between
cap and the nose gear was 7/16" and the gap for the mains was 3/16-inch.
I note that this past inspection finds the nose gear about the same with
the mains at 1/4-inch one year later. You have to bounce the weight of
the aircraft
manually several times to get the max reading. Don't think I'm
replacing the bungees for several more years. The gear has supported
the plane since June
of 2003, flown in 2004. The conditions noted for gaps at the caps are
no fuel, passengers or other gear in the plane. It's at its empty
weight of 730 lbs.
I'd consider changing bungees if the gap increased by as much as half an
inch over time. Because you have two on each main, it probably wouldn't
be a major
problem getting the plane back in the hangar for replacement of the bungee.
Good luck,

Yes and no. Could be that the struts are deflecting off axis due to
aero loads (e.g., fluttering about in the slipstream), leading to
fatigue and cracking of that joint.

How do you like working on the BD-4? I am also interested in possibly
building that plane. Are you building a kit or scratch building? How is
the factory support and the plans? Are you going with a auto conversion
or certified engine? Are you working with TVA, and how is their support?
Thanks for your input

Thilo,
I saved the commercial data for the cylinder and it's a SUSPA, series
16-1, Part number C16-14864 144N
The 144 is the maximum Newtons force or 32.374-lbs. Tube diameter is
15mm, rod diameter is 6mm, thread for tube end is M6 x 1.0mm
and the thread rod end is M6 x 1.0mm. Lengths are minimum = 61 and
maximum is = 225.
Thilo, I also have a canopy pictorial page on my site and details
describing the effort to fabricate and install it on my journal Section
5, April 23 to May 17
Section 6, May 18 through June 7 and Sept 21 through Nov 26
Hope this helps.

Forgive me if I am overstepping my limits here since I
have never posted to this list before but here goes.
My understanding of the Savannah incident is that the
aircraft in question was stressed during a windstorm.
It had been tied down by the strut attach fitting and
therefore the fitting received the brunt of the forces
from the wind. The owner had replacement parts on
order to repair the aircraft and decided to continue
flying until they arrived. The pictures in the
original post show the catastrophic result.
Again. This is only my understanding and not
necessarily what actually happened.
Chris briefly mentioned this incident at a seminar
last summer at Oshkosh and stated it was not an issue
with the CH-701.

Jari,
Where is the failure specifically? Does it separate at the bolt shown
in the picture, or between bolts not seen below?
Has anyone said?

I hope so. Still, it's simple enough to make bigger hole for it
and cover it with little piece of alum-sheet using nutplates and
sleep well, than see nightmares of falling wings :-)

It's just before the first bolt (second picture in first www-link). Picture
number
four shows also started cracking on the other wing at the same point.
With my wing skin I can't even see that point good enough. "Stress
corrosion" is
one of the annoying thing to find at early stages (penetration chemicals
helps).

So I have my hole for the sender (older style sender - top mount).
And, thanks to earlier comments from the group, I think I know how
much I can shave off to make it fit under the skin.
Now, how on earth do I get the backing plate in there? As you can
see from the pictures, it ain't goin' through that hole. I see from
the photo guide that the new senders have split rings that can slide
in. Can I cut this one? Or, should I drop it through the gas cap and
fish it out. Of course, if I do that, then it is not coming back out
later (at least not easily or close thereto) unless I remove the tank.
Anyone else find a good solution?
Thanks, Michael Valentine

Hi Michael,
It is a little tricky to get the plate in the tank, but not rocket science.
First you cut a hole where you want to install the sender. I don't
have the size in front of me, but it is just about the same as the
distance from the inner part of the notch in the ring and the
opposite side. You start by putting one side of the notch into the
hole and then work the ring around the circle sliding the edge under
the hole in the tank. When you are done all you need to do is mount
all the screws (leaving one without the paper washer or perhaps using
copper washers) with the gasket on the top side of the hole between
the sender plate and the gas tank.
You will find this is pretty easy to do with two of the screws just
threaded through the inner plate. If you choose the wrong ones then
you won't be able to complete putting the ring through the
hole. Also, take a good look at the holes in the base plate and the
ring. They only line up one way.
Good luck,
Paul

Hello, Michael
That's the same sender I'm using.
The notch on the side is the key to making the ring go through the hole.
Even then, it looks like the hole you have is small... I made them 60 mm in diameter.
The ring's diameter is 63.8 mm

Hi Michael,
Let me add a bit to what Paul told you (it's fresh in mind because I just
did it). The hole diameter called for is 59 mm. Don't make it any bigger
than that because there is very little of the inner ring overlapping the
edge at that diameter. If you open it much bigger, you won't have much of
the edge to squeeze on with the inner ring.
Also, you really only need to start one screw through the outer plate,
rubber gasket, and into the threads of the inner ring... and remember, like
Paul said, the holes will only line up one way. With the long screw
positioned away from the notch (not right next to it.. don't ask why, just
trust me) slip the inner ring into the hole with the notch against one edge.
If you can't wiggle it through or even lightly force it through the hole,
take it out and conservatively sand two opposing parts of the hole with
emery cloth to make it oblong a little bit. On the next try make sure the
notch is positioned at one of the two areas you sanded. Repeat until you can
just barely make it squeeze through.
Once the inner ring is inside the tank, thread the other screws and tighten.
You may have to fish around for the first one or two; after that they are
easy to start. For final installation you may want to put a little bit of
Peramtex or some other gas proof sealer between the rubber gasket and the
tank. Don't glob it on; the excess will be squished inside the tank where it
is unsupported and will break off later due to age and vibration. Junk like
that will clog your finger screen.
Another hint; use a maker pen to indicate the orientation of the outer plate
so you don't point it in the wrong direction.
