If I recall correctly, that's the way it's supposed to work. The
sender varies from abut 180 Ohms for an empty tank to about 10 Ohms
when full. The gauge reads full scale for full: full scale meter
reading = maximum circuit current = lowest resistance.

Yes, the kit comes with the longerons already bent. Of course they
don't match the pre-drilled holes in the bottom skin so there are
still problems to resolve.

Its not mine but.
B.J. Schwaller has his 701 flying out of Eldon MO, with a VW engine and
Valley Engineering redrive. Its a 1915cc VW. It flys great at least as
good of performance as the 80 HP rotax...... There should be some 3-6
more get airborne with the VW engine redrive package this summer..
There are pictures of his plane in the gallery section here, as well as
info about the VW and redrive package

Its still a little early to say its a REALLY good economical choice for the
701, but every indication so far is.
I personally don't think a direct drive VW is a good idea on either the 601
or the 701, nor do I think the VW with or without a redrive is a good
choice for the 601

Hi guys,
I'm to the point of fabricating the rear wing channels and on my XL. These things
are 12' long, and my plan is to bevel the edge of my work table for proper
springback, use the router to radius the edge and basically make a 12' form
block out of the edge of my table. Seems logical enough to me, but I was wondering
if (a.) this has already been tried and (b.) was it successful?
If not, how did you guys make this 12' bend? I saw on Scott Laughlin's site that
he had cut his, but never shows the bending process. I've seen some pretty
ingenious press brakes out there too, but am looking at this from a cost vs.
return standpoint as well. As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

I have never tried 12ft this way, I have bent aprox 7 ft this way. It is
not as good as finding a brake that will bend it. But I think acceptable.
If you do end up bending your channels this way. I would suggest using a
piece of plywood aprox 2 ft long to start the bend. Strike the plywood
with the mallet and move it along. It makes a nicer piece than just
striking the alum directly with the mallet in these long pieces.
Its also makes a better piece to use most of a full sheet of alum width
wise.... bend the first lip, move it out, bend the middle, move it out
bend the last lip, and snip it off of the larger sheet. This way you get
a much better clamping surface.

Thanks for the reference to my site but I got the idea
from Larry McFarland's pictures (macsmachine.com).
You might want to look at how he did it. If you go
slow, with a little persistence you can get it just
about perfect. Go slow and if you over-bend it, just
nudge it back into place. The top flange tends to
kick up so you might need to use a hammer and a vise
to bring it back to 90 degrees with the other flange
after it is bent. You will see this when you try to
lay it flat on the table after bending.
Take your time and you will get it. You will run into
a similar situation when bending your fuselage and
canopy hoops (actually it's worse since you can get
dents in the tube) and again with the canopy frame
when you bend it to match the angles you are working
on now!
For the hoops I found that a pipe bender works even
better than the clamps-and-pipe method. I got a cheap
one on-sale from Harbor Freight. It's a 12-ton unit
(talk about overkill) but it has a 1/2" shoe that fits
the 3/4" aluminum pipe well. Here are a few pictures:

I bent the two pieces with the 8' brake I built from
Larry McFarland's plans. If you can find an 8' sheet
brake you can build the rear channel and splice it. I
think the spliced rear channel is stronger than the
full piece because you have to drill that large hole
for the aileron control. The splice happens to fall
right where you drill the hole so you have much
thicker material there where the rear channel is the
weakest.
Using the table or any other form block will give you
a twisted channel - especially over a 12' length. I
know this because I tried it. The splice really is a
good solution. I got a hand drawing from Chris Heintz
for the splice. I think it may be posted on
ch601.org.

Larry-- I used the same size material.----- scratch built---- bending forms MUST
have more of a curve than what plans for template shows to allow for spring
back.
I had one template for bending and one for finished product. My longerons, all
4 came out really, really nice( I don't like to use the word "perfect" in scratch
building) I'll match them to the factory's anyday----- contact me off

Fred, I have 36 hrs on my 701 and have the same situation. After 5000+ hrs
flying small AC I hope I am correct in believing that on a gravity feed 2
tank system, that when one goes dry, the fuel in the tank with remaining
fuel will overcome any air (forcing air into empty tank) and the weight of
the fuel will feed engine. If the bubble was below (or beyond) the fuel
selector valve, it should not have effected which tank used fuel first.
Along this line: Has any one ran one tank dry (until engine quits) and then
changed over to other Tank? Also, on Rotax 912, did engine windmill or did
you have to use elect. starter. Joe

Aircraft Spruce sells these exact rivets. I compared them to the ones from
ZAC and they are identical. They are Textron Avdel Avex rivets. Identical
part numbers everyone has been giving for Canadian purchase. A4's are 4
cents and A5's are 7 cents. Tou get a 10% discount off that price if you buy
at least 100.

Fred,
I'm far away from being an expert here, just a shot in the dark:
Are your fuel caps the only source of ventilation? If yes, are they located on
top of your wing profile (or at least somewhere near that)? Then they are in
the low pressure zone of your airfoil and air is possibly sucked out of your tanks
by the vents. I would tape some flexible hose temporarily to the fuel opening
and fix the open end into the airstream. If I am correct, then your quickie
ram air vent will work and you will have enough fuel pressure. Next step would
be a Cessna type ram air system.
All this is not my wisdom of course but can be found in tony Bingelis' books

Mike-- if you have already put FUEL in the tanks for leak ck, how do you plan on

My 601XL kit came with pre-bent longerons. They are currently lying under my
work table so I see them all the time. There may be some other pieces to bend
(haven't gotten that far yet) but there are a couple of extruded angles that
were supplied to me already bent.

Hi Guys,
Even with high mounted external auxillary tanks on my ultra-not-so-light, I have
found that a bubble in the line can sit there obstinately defying the pressure
of the fuel which seemingly should push it on down the tube.
What is apparently happening is that the bubble is trying to "rise" as it would
it a large container so it resists the downward, gravity induced flow in the
line. As long as that continues, the bubble acts as a partial obstruction requiring
the fuel to flow around it. The effective cross-sectional area of the line
is drasticallt reduced and very little fuel flows past the bubble at a ridiculously
slow rate.
That phenomenon is why I have chosen to put a fuel pump near each wing tank in
my 601XL, hoping that the pressure of the pump will be more effective at moving
the bubble through the line if/when it happens. The bubbles I'm most concerned
with are the ones caused by warm gasohol vaporizing under low pressure on the
suction side of the pump.

Hi List,
If I will manage to finish my HDS and fly in this lifetime [Rolling Eyes]
I will give a detailed flight report here. Meanwhile I have to dream and stay with
the statistics. I bought a used firewall forward kit consisting of a Grob
2500, a Hoffmann inflight adjustable prop, mount and cowling. It is basically
a souped up "type 4" VW Bus engine (90HP) that used to haul around a Grob G109
touring motorglider and its MTOW of 825kg. This is a German production aircraft.
Many other types of 2 seater TMG's fly around here behind "certified" VW
conversions. Because of its popularity here in way heavier planes than my HDS,
I don't expect any performance problems.
Given that, I have to say Zenith/VW is uncommon in Europe because the very most
of them are factory built UL with Roax engines.

There is no online ordering that i could find for Textron Avdel Canada, you just
phone the number i gave and ask for Avdel rivet to get that order desk. Ask
for what you need and give address and credit card details, takes about a week

Rilsan is the trade name for Arkema made polyamide -- their website indicates
the tubing can be "thermoformed for small bend radii" for brake tubes etc
-- but no info on how to do. The melting point is about 180 deg C so a heat gun
would need careful use. Maybe boiling water (100 deg C) would do?

EMS-D10 and D120 on Corvair engines. Currently we do

No experience with Rilsan but I have made many bends in Plexiglas using a heat
gun and had no problems at all. Do you have some waste material to experiment

building thing a bit too far. These springs are $21
for a set of 2 direct from Zenith. You get the right
ones with no hassle of hunting around and it is just a
phone call and credit card away. Sure - if they were
for your Piper they would be $150 apiece but Chris
always tries to make things as inexpensive and simple
as possible for builders.
I guess the message is this. If you have to source
something - just check with Zenith first to find out
if it is even an expensive part (to buy direct from
them) before you spend hours in the internet sourcing
parts that "may" be able to do the trick.

Zenith can be a good source for parts at a reasonable price, but they can also
be the most expensive source as well. They sell the 601XL Gear Brackets for
$82.10 each. Yes, they require some work to fabricate, but you can pick up
all the materials for a set of two for less than $28. One of the reasons many
of us are building from scratch is to avoid paying the markup that any company
is rightfully going to charge. Yeah, Zenith has the gas springs, but you can
GUARANTEE their supplier has them for less. Zenith doesn't buy in such quantity
as to get a very big discount above what we'll be paying.
Every time someone posts a message looking for something from a source other
than Zenith, someone seems to take offense to it. Zenith is a great company,
they just happen to be playing middle-man in some cases.

Personal experience, you can delete or read on as you want, hope it
helps you to get the "sweet and rewarding feeling of home building" and
flying your own "Creation".
Sure, lots of improvement can be done to any set of plans and kits in
the market. But that also goes hand by hand with COST and
availability... If we are building a kit or plans built airplane,
instead of buying a new C-182 IFR "glass" panel or a pressurized
Lancair (built by professionals "kit" assemblers), is because final cost
of our airplane IS important.
In my point of view, given that I have already built 6 airplanes (now
building # 7) all of them in different materials (1 tube and cloth, 2
wood, 1 composite, 1 with aluminum ladders (yes, is true), 1 aluminum
(701) and now building a 601 XL . I have gone also though several set
of plans, some can only be named "instructive sketches" instead of
plans, also most of this were built by me before the great help of
Internet lists!!! (now we can ask how could we build one without this
GREAT help)...
Building from plans (earlier in time called blueprints) is (was) for
sure more a FUN and LEARNING process that a "Lego fit and push"
assembly process, like a computer desk we buy at Home Depot in a box...
When I built my first airplane, it was a wood construction type, made
from raw material (VP-1). My experience with wood at that time, was
only making a camp fire :-) Several times during the building
process I wanted to burn it,,, But with help of a local builder friend
and lots of persistence, the plane was completed, flown and is still
flying (new owner, cant keep all my toys :-(
The important part of building a plane is, once you decided the type
of flying and the plane you are going to build, is Think Positive
Always!
The average of plans built completed projects is about 10% (kits can
be a little higher because they are LOTS more easy to built).
But if you don't stand in front of your project with a smile, every
day you are going to start work on it, and try to solve with patience
and will all the (little, once they are solved) problems you encounter,
please don't start any project, there are enough of partial built
airplanes in garages and at e-bay to add one more... when you see your
parts you have completed, imagine the complete airplane with you flying
inside the cabin...
There is a very "romantic" builder in the Club that once made this
similarity at a hangar talk one evening:
Think of your project like an affair with a pretty women that you cant
get her image away from your mind.... A good affair, one that you will
really enjoy.
When you receive your kit, is like the first time you ask her to
dinner, and the maiden flight is when you take her out for a weekend
the first time :-0 ... If you enjoy the "building" process, is
interesting and demanding, you will fly her lots of years with
happiness, or the other way if you don't want to go to all this
process, you just need to "call" (the local FBO) and "rent" one
(C-150) any Saturday ;-) :-) :-)
Another point we have to take in account is, that any home built, is
the brain child of a designer, most of them are designed around their
flying needs and most (not the Zenith case of course) the plans are
drawn from building sketches and memory once the plane is flying and
people around start asking for plans (at least this is what used to be
in the beguining of homebuilding)... so they can be not "that"
perfectly accurate.
The kit build airplane is far more elaborate, there is always a team
working with the Designer, to improve the actual designs, they use their
experience, knowledge and the comments from builders (our comments and
complains help a lot) to make this improvements, but we all have to be
part of this happy group, remember we are the "Ten Per Centers Builder
and Flying Group" so this makes US very exclusive!
Another good thing is that the Factory (anyone) is in constant
improvement, and the Designer (most of the cases a Genius) is always
thinking and designing a new kit. See Zenith, RV and some other
serious kit manufacturers as example... They never stop bringing new
designs, so we always receive great support, not only while building,
but also the time we keep our girlfriend (oops, airplane) :-) :-)

In my ZAC pictoral instructions, I have looked and looked for advice on
clecoing (or riveting) the rear channel in the fuselage (6B5-2) to the bottom
fuselage skin, and find nothing. I know, from the drawings, that it requires A5s
at pitch 40, but no clue as to when in the process it should be done. Anyone
have an answer for me?

But work and cut with care, Some parts are made longer in propouse (sp?) because
they have to be fitted in some built stage. Is better to adjust the lenght
of the piece that to repeat the fuselage :-) (still not buildng the fuselage
myself, so no truth advise yet)
Remember messure twice (or 3 times) and cut one... Is more dificult to add
5mm to a part cut wrong that to trim 20mm.
Smile, from the extra material left, you have some scratch material you can
sell to the recicler and buy some gas... once you finished your airplane...

Gary, It is not a big problem, just a "watch out" for those coming along
after. Mistakes in the fabricated kit parts, drawings and instructions can get
tiresome, though and time-wasters. I discovered another one just this morning.
The drawings show the out to out width of the upper longerons at the
instrument panel location at 990 mm. The instructions say to set the width of
the
longerons with an extrusion clamped across the longerons. However, the panel is
920 mm out to out and the ends of the instrument panel are supposed to be 28 mm
from the outside edge of the longerons. 920 + 28 + 28 = 976. That was
actually the out to out of my longerons without any adjustments. Just took a while
to figure out what was wrong. So, as you say, I just smiled and went on to
the next thing; checking and checking and having a ball!

I have been folowing the thread on "the bubble & the gravity flow fuel system.
I would recommend puting a modified vented fuel cap like is shown in, Tony
Bingelis' book, THE SPORTPLANE BUILDER on page 271.
In my opinion (not worth much) Tony Bingelis is to homebuilding airplanes, as
William Wynne is to Corvair engine conversions: Both experts in their fields.
For those who don't know: Tony Bingelis' 4 book set can be purchased from
Aircraft Spruce for about $75--------- in my 2004/2005 catalog they are listed
on page 623----- one heck of a deal--- you can buy them individually for about
$20.00----------By buying this set "Tony" could save you that $75 many times
over.
I am not rich by any means!!!! I do not have a "library" of aircraft books,
but I do feel: Tony Bingelis' set of 4 and STICK AND RUDDER should be owned by
everyone building and flying an airplane.
Heck, maybe this advice is worh 10 cents ???

the offending tree that he got caught on. Jon is an excellent pilot with
many 100=92s of hours of flight experience and as you may have seen from
another previous link he knows the 701 well and can sit it on a strip
even better then I can. However, Jon does have a streak of ill fortune
in his life it would seem. His first accident was due to an engine
modification in which he shared with this list admitting his mistake and
in fact making 3 other people who did similar modifications aware of the
possible dangers. From time to time Jon has also cautioned new builders
of this carb modification to the Rotax whenever it came up on this list.
