Hello all,
New to the list - have been reading for several days to get the feel -
lots of great info / experience to draw from!
I am wondering if anyone has attempted to build in an aerial photo
window into the wing of a 601XL. I am thinking to make a cutout in
the lower skin within one of the wing locker compartments, insert a
plexiglass window and rig up a holder within the compartment for a
digital camera. Has anyone heard of a setup like this before?
Thanks,
Ron

I plan to do this but place the camera behind the right seat in my 601XL.
Like many my digital camera (Sony DSC-F717) has a real-time video output and
remote control. Using one of the small composite video monitors intended for
cars I can frame the shots before I take them. My camera is somewhat old but
I'll also be able to shoot short video clips.
I suspect I'll have to place a small lip upstream from the window to keep
oil etc off of it.

Hi Ron,
The conventional place for such an installation is in the fuselage
rather than the wing. Perhaps the baggage compartment would be a good choice.

Hi Ya'll.
I recieved the "drawings" for the Folding wing option for the 701 the
other day. If anybody out there has ordered the same, then you'll know
what I mean by when I say "a bit vague"!
Has anyone started on, or completed a folding wing conversion and perhaps
taken photos of the process? If you have, it would really help if I can
take a look and try and match the drawings too the pictures!

I cannot recall what the substance was that I apparently was under the influence
of when I stupidly purchased the "folding wing option".
Bottom line: After you get all the parts fitted to make wings, fuselage, tail feathers,
etc; and have all these bolted together to resemble an airplane you will
see that aforesaid option is not what you may have envisioned.
Others may view this feature differently, but I'd not reccomend it.

Ron,
You apparently want to take pictures of what you are flying OVER. While the
wing locker seems like a good, remote location, keep in mind that the bottom
of the wing is a high pressure area and you may want to design your looking
glass with that in mind. My first thought would be to keep the plexiglass on
the outside of the skin, with a mounting flange that covers the edges and
streamlines it somewhat.
A couple years ago someone posted a group of pictures detailing a "door" in
the bottom of the cockpit for flour bombing or something. I thought I saved
it, but can't find it immediately. Maybe someone else on the list has it. It
may have even been for camera mounting!

List,
Last Saturday I posted a 911 explaining that I had mis-cut my left wing
Z-spar (HDS) as if it were for the right wing. Of course there was no saving
the spar, but Dave's Cheap Sheet Metal Bending Brake bailed me out. I
picked up the parts on Monday afternoon, built most of the brake, and
finished the brake after the obligatory July 4th BBQ.
I took me less than 15 minutes to re-bend the spar. Success the first time
out of the gate, too! I'm not much of a scrounger, so I paid premium for the
parts, and, believe me, it was considerably more that $75. Still, according
to Bill Naumuk, I about broke even if I had ordered that part from ZAC. Now
the brake gets cheaper with every bend!
To date I have used ZAC supplied kits for the tail and wings, but have
decided to finish the rest as a scratch build. Dave's brake got me over a
huge mental hurdle as I have little room for more tools, and less money.
BTW - anyone who needs a right wing HDS rear spar can have it for the
shipping (from N. Calif).

Hi Guys,
This month's Kit Planes Magazine was a real value. Frank Hinde wrote a
very honest and candid article on the Stratus Subaru EA81 that was
extremely well done. A BD5 was also featured with a Subaru EA81 that
could have kept Jim Bede out of Bankruptcy. Also the $10K Rev Master
3000 was featured in the same magazine. When this engine gets into
production, its price/performance will seriously eat into the Jabaru and
Rotax market. Really worth while reading, especially those of you that
haven't decided on an engine just yet.

I assume there is a bypass around the firewall pump? Or are you pumping
through it?
If your pumping through it you might try removing this pump altogether
(really is not necessary anyway) at least temporarily. It maybe that the
little checkvalve on the third pump may be acting up.
Either that or it sounds like a venting issue.
In the HDS I had a 40106 pump in each wing root and that always gave me
5psi or so at the carb inlet.
What do you use for filtration?...Filters plugging?

I had to take the day off to keep out of the way of the contractors
who are putting in the garanger's French drain system, so I started
writing the list article.
While tabulating the questionnaire responses, I realized I was still
a few short of 25. The way things are shaping up, it probably won't make
any difference to the final outcome, but it would be nice to have the
responses "In the bank" if SA asks.
So, this is my last post asking for questionnaires or responses.
Thanks, all.

What I did not specify was that I actually spent close to $200 for my brake
(hanging my head in shame). I think that's closer to your replacement cost
prediction.

Happy Building

Ron,
A couple years ago someone posted a group of pictures detailing a "door" in
the bottom of the cockpit for flour bombing or something. I thought I saved
it, but can't find it immediately. Maybe someone else on the list has it. It
may have even been for camera mounting!

Hello all,
New to the list - have been reading for several days to get the feel -
lots of great info / experience to draw from!
Thanks,
Ron

I had to take the day off to keep out of the way of the contractors who
are putting in the garanger's French drain system, so I started writing the
list article.
While tabulating the questionnaire responses, I realized I was still a
few short of 25. The way things are shaping up, it probably won't make any
difference to the final outcome, but it would be nice to have the responses
"In the bank" if SA asks.
So, this is my last post asking for questionnaires or responses.

If your going with Aeroflash they will last about 100 to 150 hours
before the big capacitor fails. Easy to replace but you need access to
the power supply.
On the HDS I put the power supplies behind the seats and ran the
sheilded wire out to the wing tips.

Martin, I just cut a hole in the metal part of the wing tip. It is about 5"

out rivets once in 10 years or so wouldn't be so bad.

Subject: | Fuse side access panel on a CH-701 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: MacDonald Doug <dougsnash@yahoo.com>
Hi guys, I am scratch building a CH-701. On Sunday I
cut out the fuselage sides and made an oops. I
mis-read the plans at the back end on one side and
drew my station lines at 293 mm instead of 298 mm.
The cumulative error is that the fuse side is 10 mm
short. I was thinking of the following solutions and
figured I'd better get some feedback. Of course I
will correct the station lines so that the underlying
parts attach correctly.
1. Re-cut the one side correctly and scrap the skin
that has been mis-cut.
2. Modify the back bulkhead so that it's flange fills
the missing 10 mm.
3. Make a removable inspection panel at the back so
that the rudder and elevator cables can be easily
inspected where they pass through the fuselage.
Personally I'm leaning towards option #3. This will
fix my screw-up and have the added bonus of making
future annuals easier. I have ordered extra threaded
nutplates (belly panel access cover style) with the
idea of using these to attach the inspection panel.
Any thoughts???

SETTING THE STAGE
1. Were you aware of, and did you join a builder's list before you
made a final kit choice?
2. Did you post questions on the list re: your reservations
concerning a potential choice?
3. Did the responses (Assuming any) have a significant effect on
your final choice?
4. If "No" to the above, how long had you been building before
joining?
5. How long would it take to drive to the nearest local builder of
your kit brand and model?
6. How long would it take to drive to the nearest local builder of
your kit brand?
7. Was the lack of local builders the primary reason you joined a
list?
8. If "No" to any of the above, why did you join a list?
DAY TO DAY
1. How many days a week do you post to your list? (Do you feel
more of a need to be an active
contributor vs a passive member)
2. Are most of your posts re: specific technical
questions/answers, or are they more socially
and opinion oriented?
3. What is the percentage of answers/leads to technical questions
you get from your list as
opposed to other sources?
4. Do you find your participation in a list more satisfying from a
technical or social aspect?
CRUNCH TIME (This is the "Essay test" portion)
We've all been faced with major setbacks. No matter the
circumstances, the first
question is "How did that happen?" Answer as many times as you
like. Suggestions for
content are:
Did you know before you posted that you were the cause of the
problem? If you knew
you screwed up, did you post to "Admit your guilt and confess your
sins", getting the reinforcement
from other listers like, "Yeah, join the club", enabling you to go
on? Were you angry at yourself
or depressed? How long does it take you to get over the
anger/depression/indecision and back to work?
Did you post to determine where you screwed up? Was the list
instrumental in finding
the reason?
How do you feel about problems attributable to the kit
manufacturer?
BOTTOM LINE
1. Has membership to the list been worthwhile?
2. Has membership to the list provided enough support to salvage a
seemingly hopeless project?
3. Would you recommend membership in a list to a newbie?

Oh well, it's done. At least you get a little satisfaction that

What's sad is, ZAC replacement parts are pretty reasonable- the

Here goes:
SETTING THE STAGE
1. I only found out about the list after I chose the kit
2. No. see above
3. no
4. I learnt about the list at the Zenith rudder workshop, so
simultaneously I guess
5. about 30 minutes
6. about 30 minutes
7. no, the large pool of experience was the reason
8. because of the large pool of experience, which has proved to be
accurate
DAY TO DAY
1. I only post to the list once every month or so
2. technically oriented
3. This is an unfair question: by religiously reading the
list every day most of my questions are answered before I even think of
them! Otherwise I would say about 90% of my answers come from reading and
from my Technical advisor
4. actually both: although I answered technically oriented
to 2 above, there is no doubt that the list builds a great feeling of
camaraderie and fellowship
CRUNCH TIME
I typically pick up right away (or the next day) when I screwed up, and by
the way it is always my fault due to carelessness. However I don't spend any
time getting angry or depressed as I understand from the list that building
a plane is much like playing golf, i.e getting off the fairway and into the
rough is not the problem, the trick is in getting back onto the fairway.
This where the EAA technical advisor comes in: he helps me to formulate my
ideas and I usually call the kit manufacturer if there are any doubts
To be honest I don't have any complaints about my kit manufacturer (Zenith).
To my mind they do a fantastic job: nothing (so far) is missing from my kits
and if I screw up a part they send a replacement right away
BOTTOM LINE
1. Membership has been more than worthwhile, it is essential
2. I haven't got to that stage (yet!) but I can see where it would help
3. Anybody that builds a plane without belonging to a list is either
very experienced or crazy! Yes, I would strongly recommend it

Hi all,
Ok, it's official. I got home from work today, got the mail in and had a package
waiting for me inside. Yep, I now have my CH 601 HDS plans and construction
manual. (excitement sets in) I slowly open the package and
proceed to inspect its contents. Somewhere in the process I find that I am inspecting
the inside of my eyelids (tired). To relax, I begin paging through my
EAA Sport Aviation magazine which also arrived today. And BAM!!!, right there
is an article that someone made sure was in there just for me. "Checking out"
"You've commited to building - but are you ready to fly?" Talk about putting
a damper on my excitement. I'll get back to inspecting and familiarizing myself
with the plans when I'm not so tired (take nap first). Can't wait to make
that first cut. Got to get that "honey do" list out of the way first (my unfortunate
agreement with wife) before I can start building.

I'm kinda surprised that no one has challenged this statement.
6061 is kinda hard to find in the clad condition.
2024 and 7075 are commonly produced "clad" or bare, depending on the use
but don't think I ever used any 2024 in the bare state or any 6061 in the
clad state.
There IS a SLIGHT difference in the strength of clad and bare alum. More
pronounced the thinner you go as the clad makes up a greater percent of the
total.
The clading is almost pure alum applied to one or both sides.
Getting back to the initial statement however...
Why would 6061 ,which is pretty highly alloyed, be more corrosion resistant
than pure alum??

I have a question about the hinge for the aileron trim. In the plans
the cutout for the trim tab is 538mm, and the hinge is listed as 535mm
in length.
I ordered the hinges for my flaps and the aileron trim and they were
delivered today. The hinge that was included, that I'm supposing is for
my aileron trim, is only 415mm in length... Did ZAC send the wrong part
to me or has the plans been changed that I'm not aware of?

Subject: | Re: Alodine and Zinc Chromate, Part II |
Your statements are basically correct John. 6061-T6 is 'slightly' less corrosion
resistant than 2024 clad in pure aluminum (very slightly so). Keep in mind
that the layer of pure aluminum is sometimes only a few atoms thick. this
shouldn't be of any concern if you're painting your aircraft. If you're going
to polish the aluminum and leave it bare, that layer will eventually become
thin enough as to warrant corrosion treatment and painting. I understand that
several good products exist specifically to provide extended protection to polished
aluminum aircraft, although I've never used any of them.
If you were able to find 6061-T6 with a layer of pure aluminum, you'd get the
best of both worlds. Good luck on that one. It's not necessary, so it's not
available...

I'm kinda surprised that no one has challenged this statement.
6061 is kinda hard to find in the clad condition.
2024 and 7075 are commonly produced "clad" or bare, depending on the use
but don't think I ever used any 2024 in the bare state or any 6061 in the
clad state.

Hi all,
Ok, it's official. I got home from work today, got the mail in and had a
package waiting for me inside. Yep, I now have my CH 601 HDS plans and
construction manual. (excitement sets in) I slowly open the
package and proceed to inspect its contents. Somewhere in the process I find
that I am inspecting the inside of my eyelids (tired). To relax, I begin
paging through my EAA Sport Aviation magazine which also arrived today. And
BAM!!!, right there is an article that someone made sure was in there just
for me. "Checking out" "You've commited to building - but are you ready to
fly?" Talk about putting a damper on my excitement. I'll get back to
inspecting and familiarizing myself with the plans when I'm not so tired
(take nap first). Can't wait to make that first cut. Got to get that "honey
do" list out of the way first (my unfortunate agreement with wife) before I
can start building.

Okay, I'm going to say it. XL, schmeckzel.
Zenith, the HDS design doesn't seem to want to go away like you would
like it to, so why not clean up the prints and builder's manual?
Jerome, my advice is to lock the builder's manual in a time capsule set
to open after you're flying. For better or worse, you're now a member in the
club of the most talented people I've ever had the privilege of being
associated with- HDS builders.
Good building!

I had the same problem with the elevator trim. I called and told them what
I wanted and what they sent me was way shorter than what the plans ask for.
When I called Shirley, she stated that I had newer plans and what they had
sent me was for older versions. She explained that I need to look for update
codes on the plans. In this case, I think it was a number 2 in a triangle
that told me I needed a different part number than what is listed in the plans.
ZAC sent out another one for no charge. I offered to send the other one
back, but they told me to use it somewhere else. It is going in my bottom fuse
access door.

Long time lurker - 701 plans and Corvair core in hand. (Let the flaming
begin).
SETTING THE STAGE
1 - Yes
2 - No
3 - Yes (my questions have, so far, been answered without me having to
ask)
4 - N/A
5 - 2.5 hours
6 - .25 hours
7 - No
8 - The list is an obvious wealth of information. Even if everyone on my
block was building a CH something I'd read the list.
DAY TO DAY
1 - 0 (Well, until now.)
2 - N/A
3 - I look at the list FIRST. I'm in the very early stages of my project
and will move forward at a glacial pace due to financial and time
constraints. This does provide me with the ability to benefit from other
builder's trials and tribulations before I forge ahead. Short answer -
90%
5 - I've really enjoyed the camaraderie in a lurking, non participating
sort of way until now.
CRUNCHTIME
I'm not far enough along to have blown off any toes yet. (Other than the
possible engine selection which is clearly heavier than CH intended.)
I'm sure I'll shoot myself squarely in the foot at some point. When I do
so I'll confess here and accept the help and any criticism as well.
Since I'm going the plans built route I won't be able to comment on kit
issues. I've been studying the plans but it is too soon for me to
comment on those.
BOTTOM LINE
1 - Yes
2 - I'm don't think I'd have ordered plans if it weren't for this list.
3 - Absolutley.
Thanks to all you listers for the considerable amount of effort I see
put forth here.

Roger-
Attached. Thanks.
Bill
SETTING THE STAGE
1. Were you aware of, and did you join a builder's list before you made
a final kit choice?
2. Did you post questions on the list re: your reservations concerning a
potential choice?
3. Did the responses (Assuming any) have a significant effect on your
final choice?
4. If "No" to the above, how long had you been building before joining?
5. How long would it take to drive to the nearest local builder of your
kit brand and model?
6. How long would it take to drive to the nearest local builder of your
kit brand?
7. Was the lack of local builders the primary reason you joined a list?
8. If "No" to any of the above, why did you join a list?
DAY TO DAY
1. How many days a week do you post to your list? (Do you feel more of a
need to be an active
contributor vs a passive member)
2. Are most of your posts re: specific technical questions/answers, or
are they more socially
and opinion oriented?
3. What is the percentage of answers/leads to technical questions you
get from your list as
opposed to other sources?
4. Do you find your participation in a list more satisfying from a
technical or social aspect?
CRUNCH TIME (This is the "Essay test" portion)
We've all been faced with major setbacks. No matter the circumstances,
the first
question is "How did that happen?" Answer as many times as you like.
Suggestions for
content are:
Did you know before you posted that you were the cause of the problem?
If you knew
you screwed up, did you post to "Admit your guilt and confess your
sins", getting the reinforcement
from other listers like, "Yeah, join the club", enabling you to go on?
Were you angry at yourself
or depressed? How long does it take you to get over the
anger/depression/indecision and back to work?
Did you post to determine where you screwed up? Was the list
instrumental in finding
the reason?
How do you feel about problems attributable to the kit manufacturer?
BOTTOM LINE
1. Has membership to the list been worthwhile?
2. Has membership to the list provided enough support to salvage a
seemingly hopeless project?
3. Would you recommend membership in a list to a newbie?

I had to take the day off to keep out of the way of the contractors
who are putting in the garanger's French drain system, so I started
writing the list article.
While tabulating the questionnaire responses, I realized I was still
a few short of 25. The way things are shaping up, it probably won't make
any difference to the final outcome, but it would be nice to have the
responses "In the bank" if SA asks.
So, this is my last post asking for questionnaires or responses.
Thanks, all.

I believe I have found someone to make my die's. They will be rather
expensive, but I need them and do not have the resource's to make them. I tried
the plywood ones, but all I have is a small band saw. I would need a compass
to make the circle and could not find one in this small "Little house on the
Prarie town". I should have my dies in about a month I am told. I guess it
is time to go work on an engine now. I will pick up all the core parts from a
Corvair guy next week. I can have it cleaned locally, but everything else I
will send out.
I just wanted you guys to know that my dies will be available to any future
builder at no charge except shipping. That is after I have all my holes

It is my understanding that for corrosion to occur there are two things
required moisture and a source of oxygen. Pure aluminium is very porous as
it corrodes this porosity will hold moisture which speeds up the corrosion
process. Alumiclad, as I understand it, allows a thin layer of oxidation to
occur that is not thick enough to be porous just thick enough to isolate
the underlying alloys from a source of oxygen.

I'm actually pumping through the firewall pump.
My plan was to remove it as I became convinced it was
useless... not so sure anymore since it brings back my
fuel pressure to an acceptable level (when used in
conjunction with wing pumps).
I'll check for venting, but I'd be surprised (I saw
fuel dropping out of vents when I moved the plane with
fuel gas tanks last weekend. Of course, visually,
vents look clean.
Filtration?
. finger screen in tanks, gascolator at the bottom of
the firewall, fuel filter at the carburetor.
The fuel pressure sender is on the gascolator. I just
checked and cleaned the gascolator screen upon doing
my annual inspection, about a month or so ago.
I'll inspect my finger screens.

I bought the steel and machined the dies per the 701 plans, just because
I could. the sizes are 65, 95 & 115 mm. Does the 601 use the same size
dies? I don't think so. This is very old hat for experienced listers,
but for the new guys, if you wish to see these dies in action, please
email and I will forward a picture of them being used in my gravity
powered lightning hole press. I would be happy to loan these out for
reasonable periods; months, not years. They are not lightweight.

I believe I have found someone to make my die's. They will be rather
expensive, but I need them and do not have the resource's to make them.
I tried the plywood ones, but all I have is a small band saw. I would
need a compass to make the circle and could not find one in this small
"Little house on the Prarie town". I should have my dies in about a
month I am told. I guess it is time to go work on an engine now. I
will pick up all the core parts from a Corvair guy next week. I can
have it cleaned locally, but everything else I will send out.
I just wanted you guys to know that my dies will be available to any
future builder at no charge except shipping. That is after I have all
my holes done!!

No mail for several days. Have I been banished because I haven't worked
on my 701 for a week?

Hey Larry, sorry for putting you on hold for so long. My schedule has been
nuts lately. I'm spending all tomorrow evening on the punch and brake to finish
the last parts of the fuse (sheet metal at least). I finished the Nylon Pedal
Bearings for us. They actually look pretty darn good. The Nylon is a dark
blue (they call it black in the catalog), which looks a lot better than the
neon green from Zenith.
I knocked out a pair of flanging dies yesterday that actually did a really
good job too. I had to use a rubber mallet and tap around the perimeter to get
a crisp edge, but it's not too hard to do. If you've already ordered yours,
let me know what the cost is and I'll split it with you if you want. (I've kept
you waiting long enough it's the least I can do!). If not, you're more than
welcome to the ones I did last night, and the steel ones are due back on the
17th.
Two of the parts I'm punching and forming tomorrow are parts that you already
have. I screwed up (don't tell anybody you ever heard me say that!) Part
#s 6-W-4-1 and 6-W-4-2 turned out perfect, except for the fact that the large
flanged hole is too far towards the top of the parts. I programmed it 85 mm from
the top of the part, rather than the holes above it. No problem, except a
control rod passes through it, and the hole interferes with the 1/4" spar cap
as well. $#%@. Anyway, they'll be done tomorrow.
I finished the spacers (6-W-4-5) for the center wing spar. I just cut them
from aluminum rod and drilled a hole in them. We'll need to finish the edges
a bit, but the thickness turned is good within .010".
So how goes everything else in the hanger? Have you got your firewall rivited
yet (except for the parts your waiting for!)

I am selling my 601 XL.....I have completed the airframe and have a corvair
engine that I was going to put in it also. I would really like to finish it
and sell it as a flying airplane. If anyone knows of someone that would like
to buy a 601 finished to their specs. contact me off list at
_afterfxllc@aol.com_ (mailto:afterfxllc@aol.com) . I figure I could deliver the finished
plane to someone in about 45 days.
