Subject: Re: Zenith-List: RE: 701 testing phase
Tom,
Thanks, I am well pleased the way it turned out. As far as my testing, the
only problems that I had were as following:
1. Had a heavy left wing..... corrected it by moving the bungee that keeps
the elevator cables separated, the bungee was pulling on the stick.
2. My Stratomaster engine monitor would not read the correct
RPM.........Sent back to Stratomaster, they sent a new one with the same
results. Called up Matt and he said he would work on it with the factory,
After a while they sent out another replacement with excellent results.
There was some software problems which they corrected. They were very good
to work with. My reccomendation is always check the Tach against an optical
Tach.
3. My oil temps were hard to keep above 185 degrees during cold
weather.....covered almost the entire oil cooler which also blocked the
airflow to the heater muff. Installed an oil thermostat from Lockwood. Now
the engine heats up quicker and I do not need any tape across my oil cooler.
4. Per Roger at Zenith I bent the trailing edge of my elevator so that it
is in line with the centerline of the elevator. The bend was used for the
lighter 60 HP Rotax. Now my trim tab stays in the middle during cruise.
As far as numbers, I am only seeing about 80 MPH at 5500. This plane likes
to fly at 70 MPH, pouring on the throttle only gains another 10 MPH. These
are indicated airspeeds and from what my GPS says it seems to be fairly
correct. I haven't had too many no wind days to try the GPS runs. I have a
static port and from what I have read on the list if I use the cabin
pressure for my static pressure, the airspped will read higher. I am
looking into strut fairings and wheel pants to see if they help. Might also
change my landing gear leaf to the carbon fiber one to save some weight. I
added lots of "small goodies" and am paying for it in weight.
I am having a real blast with the plane, haven't really checked the GPH
that the Rotax burns but it isn't much. Never before have I flown any other
plane and been able to really see what is on the ground below me. It is a
totally different type of flying.

would ask you to reconsider your decision to leave the list. Just
remember all the help you got and now with your experience you can pass

Hi folks,
I have been on this list since 1998. During this time I have completed
a CH 601 HDS, which I'm now flying since 5 years. The list has proven to
me invaluable - without it,I would have had a much harder time to build
the airplane.
My plans are to build another airplane - either a Cozy Mark IV (for
which I have the plans already) or an RV 8A.
Although having already completed the CH 601 HDS I have stayed on this
list to help some novice builder and also get some new ideas about
flying technique and modification ideas. However, the quality of the
posting on this list have deterioted especially over the last few weeks.
I had always thought, that the builders are an especially friendly and
helpful bunch. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Mainly for this
reason, but also since I want to move on to other airplanes I will leave
this list.
I wish all of you the very best.

I received a DVD yesterday from the HomebuiltHelp series. Friendly and
helpful is certainly the theme of the disc I watched, the sound and video
are clear and the camera is not shaky at all which has been a problem with
some videos I've watched in the past. I've got another coming and if it is
the same quality as the one one I've watched I have no problem at all
suggesting they would be of help to most people. There are a number of
titles in the series covering many aspects of building, registering and
launching an aircraft.

Keith,
The only instructions were in a newer version of the plans showing a vague
drawing
of the installation. The tanks mount directly outside the inboard tanks. The
only difference in the aux tanks is the finger screen comes out the rear
inboard of the tank.
Everything else was just doubled in the kit. Problem I'm working on now is
how to fit the 2 gascolaters with the straight hose barbs around the flap
handle as in the plan but in reality it will not work. I am thinking of
going with metal lines and AN fittings from the wing root to in behind the
seat to the selector valve. Selector valve is OFF- INBD tanks -OUTBD tanks.
Here are a few pics of the tanks installed.

All,
I have been attempting to stay out of this one. However, long and large
attachments are not the way to make friends and influence people. Yep, I get
mad once in a while - like when we got the add for a Condo. But, I quickly
get over it and if the person sends a "Whoops", I get over it even easier.
Still, no excuse for sending large files that cause such a problem with
people who have dial up. There are many places in the US and the world,
where dial up is a blessing because it allows access to the internet. If I,
or anyone else is fortunate enough to have high speed of some kind, we owe
it to others to be respectfull. If we cannot do that, then we should simply
get off the list.
I have only been on a year or so, but see no reason to continue if the
inconsiderate actions of a few cause the list to be less than enjoyable.
Please give your thoughts and actions s bit of thought.

Thanks very much for your reply George, I will source a restrictor (I've seen a
restrictor 'T' that would be perfect) to bleed fuel and vapour back to the tank.
Simple job, as I have a guage at line pressure on the panel, and the top
tank connector is redundant and blocked off at the moment.
Cheers!

John, If you are talking about the little 3/32" rivets for the nutplates,
here is what I did:
Since the rivets are countersunk, I countersunk the holes with a 7/32" drill
bit (the same one I used to open the screw holes). For construction of the
tail, wings and fuselage, I have various lengths of 2" x 2" structural steel
tubes. I placed the rivet head side on top of one of these tubes. I used a 1/4"
x 1" steel bolt as a "rivet smasher." I placed the tip of the bolt on the
end of the rivet and gave it two or three smart whacks with a hammer to the head
of the bolt. These are pretty soft rivets so that's all it takes.
If you are scratch building a spar and talking about those rivets, I plead
complete ignorance.

Just visited the Zenith web site to check out the new
FWF. They have painted the lower cowl black to make
it look like it is much more sleek.
I missed where they put the oil cooler and I'm
disappointed that they still aren't supporting the
true 100HP Rotax by using the Rotax air box with cold
air intake and carb heat. You loose about 10HP using
the hot air in the cowling. I would of thought that
with a makeover like that, they would make whatever
adjustments necessary to get all the horse power you
could out of the engine you paid extra for.

You can borrow my squeezer for a little while. I have the dimple dies
and the flat dies for setting them. I don't know if it would be worth
the postage or not.

Subject: Zenith-List: What to do about the solid rivets on the 701's
elevator trailing edge?
Does anyone have a solution to getting those rivets driven without
ordering a rivet squeezer from Wicks or AS?
Can I just use a pair of pliers to smash them?
Thanks
