Good morning, all - I'm looking for your advice on coating or plating the nose
gear leg. Ours is an XL, but the question applies across others too, I believe.
I want to protect the outer surface against corrosion and wear from the nylon
bearings, but a local shop wants $250 for electroless nickel, and $150 for
external chrome plating. I have some spray-on dry film lube that I'm considering.
What have you used on yours, and would you do the same again?
Thanks- David Glass XL fuselage finally nearing completion Forest, VA

David,
I'd consider powder coating or painting, but wouldn't consider plating.
I put Zinc Chromate on with the intent of
going with a powder coat sometime during my current painting efforts.
The zinc chromate primer has held up
well after 85 hours flight time. Seems the frontal attack of the
atmosphere has done more damage than the
bearings. There are several spots that have just begun to show metal at
the bearings. The front of the strut is
chinked up well with corrosion on the front surfaces of the gear
struts. Will probably sand blast and then coat.

Wow, if that's the locally quoted price, you might want to check out an Oregon
company called Technical Finishes and Coatings. I have my rudder pedals there
right now. They quoted $40 to Nickel Plate the pair of them. Even after
shipping is factored in, you'll save a fortune.
When you request the quote, just fax them the drawing WITHOUT any references
to aircraft (everyone seems to see dollar signs when airplanes are involved).
Include a contact number (or better yet, just a return fax number) and you
should hear from them the same or following day at the outside.

Powdercoat would look great, but you'll still want to plate them for corrossion
resistance. We have a fantastic powdercoat line here with a 5 stage pre-treatment
line, but we wouldn't think of recommending you powdercoat an exterior
surface. There are two or three powdercoatings out there that will hold up
in UV and moisture intense environments, and they all look abominable. We're
talking thick, ugly, orangepeel texture.
Wet paint may be the way to go if you don't want to plate with Nickel or Zinc.
Nickel looks a little better, but the Zinc still adds a nice shiny (if slightly
rainbowed) appearance.

Hi,
Regardless whether one coats or plates the nose gear tube, there still
will be a wear problem since
sand and dust will be deposited on the gear and wear out the nylon. I
used a somewhat
different solution. I made a nose gear fairing that encloses the strut.
Underneath the fairing I
lubricate the bearing with grease once a year. Almost no dirt gets into
the grease,
and the wear has essentially stopped. For a look at the fairing, go to
http://www.utdallas.edu/~klaus/Airplane/nose_gear_fairing.html
Best wishes,

Starret Company makes a great hole saw that uses pilot drills as the center
mandrel, and the hole saws are interchangeable for particular sizes. They
are made specifically for thin material and have the teeth set to saw a
perfect hole. Make a small guide hole and the pilot drill will pick it up
and drill a smooth, concentric and accurate hole. I used these on all my
panel holes and they are not that expensive.
They are available from MIS and maybe McMaster Carr.
Incidentally, I flew a J-3 Cub on floats the other day and I wish I had a
701 on floats. What a HOOT doing splash and go's!

You may not want to spring for the price of one but Greenlee makes punches,
one of which makes an inch and an eighth round hole.
These are called "knockout" punches; come in "diameter" sizes, and "conduit"
sizes.
Most two-way radio service/installation shops have an extensive assortment.
The size you seek is exactly what was used in the old days on "low band
whips" to punch the large hole for base insulator mounting. A local
facility may be inclined to let you use theirs.
Use your caliper to check size.....the "conduit" series makes holes
considerably larger than the trade-size conduit marked on the punch, whereas
those marked as "xx diam." will punch that size hole.

Subject: | XL/Jabiru Firewall Fwd. Kit Question |
Regarding the Firewall Forward Kit from Jabiru USA for the 601XL: I am
having trouble downloading pictures of the air dam instructions in the
Jabiru website and they are closed for the week. I assume the air dam
is used to direct inlet air to the oil cooler, but I can not tell where
it is supposed to be located. In earlier pictures, before the oil
cooler was rotated 90 degrees, they showed using baffle material between
the oil cooler and the cowl. Is that still required? Thanks for you
help!

I have also noticed that the sheet aluminum that I have bought from Aircraft
Spruce often arrives with damaged edges as well as scratches from when the
material is rolled for shipping. On the other hand, the shipments I have
had from Wicks have been blemish free and their sheet metal, or at least on
the batches I have ordered, have always come with a protective layer of
plastic.

Way to go Wade! Keep us posted on your progress. I have received damaged and undamaged
sheet metal from both Wicks and Aircraft Spruce. I think most of the damage
occured during shipping, not as a result of handling by the supplier.

When buying more raw aluminum, try Yarde Metals... For some of the other
smaller metal pieces you'll need, try Speedy's Metals. You can Google
either and find them... You will spend a fortune on metals from AS.

Its amazing how much scrap aluminum can accumulate in your workshop. Before
starting on my wing spars I decided to make good use of my leftovers. I went
through the plans and fabricated every part I could possibly make with scrap
I had on hand. In the last week I've made everything from access plates to Z
angles. I made a total of 76 parts, both large and small, and used up a
bunch of scrap aluminum.
For those who may be interested, I have posted a website to chronicle my
project. Some of the pages are incomplete at this time. You can click on the
"Latest Photo Update" image to see what I'm currently working on.
