John,
I have a turbine powered HVLP. Basically it is a spray gun with a large
diameter hose and the box the turbine is in. The run all over in price. Mine
was $1200.00, but I'm a painting contractor so I use it on jobs also. The
nice thing about them is they are very portable. No compressor needed. Just
plug into the wall. Also, you will use less paint, way less overspray and
they are infinitely adjustable as far as material and air flow. I think
there is one available with a fresh air mask system.

John,
I've been using the AFS water borne paint and have used the Harbor
Freight #43430 HVLP spray gun
to do the primer. Good gun! Totally simple to use and adjust. I've
been using the DeVilbiss GFG 670
spray gun for finish because I found lots less orange peel on my test
panels with it. The DeVilbiss gun is
a later development than the HVLP type even though it is a gravity cup
type also. It meets the over spray
standards held by HVLP and is recognised as being compliant with the
intent of HVLP as well.
The 43430 is about $40 at Harbor Freight and comes with a 1.4 tip.
The GFG 670 is available for $250 from Internet Sources and comes with 3
tips, 1.2, 1.3 and a 1.4mm.
The DeVilbiss gun offers a better finish if you're finicky or relatively
new to painting, but in the end,
you could probably use either gun for finish work that would satisfy.
You need a 70 to 80-degree
day to get a good result with either.
Good luck,
Larry McFarland - 601HDS at www.macsmachine.com
See the paint page or journal section 10, from April to now on the

Subject: | XL Canopy on an HD |
Listers,
I'm making progress! I'm working on the canopy now and have a few
questions. In the current photo guide, which was redone about a year ago,
it shows a new part 6C3-9. My old canopy plans don't have this part. It is
a little gusset that attaches the front tube to the side rails. The photo
guide shows three rivets in the tube and three in the steel side rail. Does
anyone know how think the material is? I also can't find the pitch for the
screws that go through the canopy Plexiglas into the tube. And a third
question: I read that the hole in the tube starts out as a number 40. The
screws supplied are not self tapping - they have no point. Mine are also
number 6s where the new plans call for number 8s. Did those that have built
the canopy tap threads into the tube after the #40 hole was drilled?
If someone could find or send me the current version of 6C3 I would be
appreciative too.
Thanks ..

Jeff,
I did the old canopy, so tapping the holes was not an issue. The screws
looked a bit like a #6 deck screw and they did
tap the hole nicely and get a good grip. I'd recommend you not do
anything to the tube or canopy until you've tried the
process on a sample-cut piece of tube and similar piece of
sample-acrylic. Always easier to evaluate without the stress
on a test piece. Only then will you know if the threads called out
really work with the #40 hole with or without tapping.

Jeff:
Use a pitch of 100. 17 screws in the front hoop and
15 in the rear. There's no need to tap the hoops.
The #6 screws (NAS548P6-10, not pointed) hold tight in
the #40 holes. They don't however hold in the inner
flashing angle (6-C-3-4)(.040" L-angle) so I used some
J-nuts inside them. Worked like a charm.
I just welded a tab onto the side rails for the front
hoop and put three rivets into the hoop.
When you are done, send me a picture like this one:
