Today August 22, at 6:30 PM N706TS came of age and left the nest.
N706TS is a 601HD powered by a Stratus Suburu with a three bladed Warp
Drive prop. She weights 788 pounds empty, plans built, construction was
started in October of 1998. I can't give you rate of climb yet because I
found my vertical speed indicator is not functioning. During the twenty
minute flight over the airport handling was tested and found to be as
expected heavy in roll light in pitch. I also noted that considerable
right rudder is needed during full power climbs to keep the ball
centered. Uncalibrated air speed was 95 mph at cruise with no wheel
pants (haven't finished the mold yet). More details when I analyze the
data from my flight and engine recorder.

I got a response back from Nick at ZAC on my query about the tail skin
thickness increase.
He said:
"You are right, some of the aircraft made at AMD and Zenar use .025" on the
skin. Unless you have another reason, I would suggest to stay with what is
shown in the drawings."
This tells me that we can do it if we want to, but I am going to go ahead
and stay with the 16. Mainly to keep the weight down. I will just have to
be very careful when handling it.
Thanks to everyone for their comments.

Subject: | 601 XL Rotax cowling needed |
Hi folks, it seems that my engine cooling trouble is not over and I'm
at my wits end. So I've decided to fix it permanently by changing my
stock cowling to something better.
That better happens to be the new cowling for a Rotax install on the
601XL (the one with the rads up front). Does anyone have such a
cowling they would like to sell? Perhaps someone out there has a FW
forward kit for a Rotax they decided against? ;)
On a whim I called Zenith but they had none in stock since they buy
them from Czech aircraft works and we know that arrangement has
fallen through. Skyhops in Florida has not returned my calls or email
as of yet since they might have them...
Any help is greatly appreciated

No intent to scare you off. By all accounts, the 496 is a great unit, just be
careful where you put the antenna, and what it touches unless you remove the magnet.

Wow. The fact that the antenna can cause navigation problems for someone trying
not use the GPS... that could force you to use the GPS... wow. That is scary.
You may have just convinced me a 296 is the way to go.

The 496 has done away with the magnet in the antenna. Also there is a thread on
the rec.aviation.piloting newsgroup about removing the magnet in the 396.
Larry Portouw wrote:

A freind of mine had a very bad experience with this is a Mooney when
the antenna touched a fuselage tube over the instument panel. There are instructions
for removing the magnet posted on the internet.

Hi Bill,
I've been able to stick a pencil under the rubber trim up front just for
curiosity and it didn't increase or make
any noise at all. Don't think you've got a noise problem, but the prop
is the greatest contributor noise wise.
I fly a Subaru with full muffler system and it's relatively quiet by
comparison.
I don't think water leakage is a problem either, but I've only been in
the rain once and never thought to look for
leaks. I was more concerned about the possibililty of spark plugs
getting drowned or shorted out. Washing doesn't
seem to create any leakage either.
Heat from direct sunlight is the worst. I did my test flying period on
85 to 95-degree days and the best advice is to
always have a hat. Baseball types are what I wear, but the ears get
burned, so I'm looking for a brim hat to replace
the ball cap. In higher air, UV is especially bad for the eyes, so be
very aware of what you're buying in glasses.
The shade is not as important as the UV quality. I keep 3 pair that
clip onto the frames each side for flying and
motorcycling. No matter what the heat of the day, once you're on the
way up it cools nicely if you're wearing a hat.
Good luck,

Hi,
I'd suggest you hook the wing tank line to a pump that feeds the top of
the header tank. What you
describe seems to say the engine feeds from both. That seems awkward for
a fuel system. If you can
turn the wing tank line on or off and pump fuel to the engine from only
the header the system will be easier
to keep track of and trouble shoot.

Subject: | Firewall Sealant |
All,
My paint job can out great, except for a yellow jacket wasp (now white jacketed),
that decided to investigate the leading edge of my rudder. He stuck like
glue and died in the position he landed. The paint shop said certain flying
bugs are attracted to the fumes of acrylic enamel. They said they would repaint
the rudder. I told them to leave it there, it adds character. Its not like
it can hurts the looks !!!
My question. Does anyone recommend a firewall sealant they they were happy with
?? I used Yamaha boots to cover the nose wheel steering arms. But I want
to completely seal out any air from entering the cockpit. Also, has anyone used
a engine-side insulation blanket to help with heat rejection into the cockpit
?
Thanks,

NO wind noise from canopy not sealing properly. Some wind noise from
air stream around fuselage. My Magnum Ivoprop is very quiet.

I have flown through a VERY heavy rain storm. Absolutely no canopy
leaks. Ground leaks I don't know, always hangared.

For heat, climb to cooler OAT. Sunglasses and a ball cap are a must.

I think the floats manufactured by CZAW were part of
the license agreement that has just ended between
Zenair and CZAW. From what I've heard, CANZAC
(zodierocket AKA Mark Townsend) are taking over the
manufacture of the Zenair line of floats sometime in
the near future.
I checked their website yesterday and did not see very
much about floats. Just the "call for pricing" note
that has always been there. I'm sure once the details
are sorted out, we'll hear about it on this list.
Personally, I'm hoping plans will once again be
available for the Zenair floats. I think it would be
an enjoyable challenge to build a set. Maybe even
amphibs.

Chris
To my knowledge no one has put an 801 on floats.
I put my 801 on floats briefly this summer. I used the Full Lotus and Czech Aircraft
Works instruction manual and drawings. The front attach points were behind
the lower engine mount. The front attach points rotated around the bolts.
After looking at the installation I saw too many single point failure places
that were not beefy enough for me. I'm going to rethink it the attachment this
winter. I think I will develop another attach point just in front of the
doors. That should provide some redundancy.
I set the angle between the chord and the floats at 6 degrees. But I never even
started the engine while it was on floats.

For the record, CZECH AIRCRAFT WORKS has developed its' own line of floats.
And we are expanding our float production in an attempt to keep up with
demand.
We have a completely new float and float installation package for the 701.
Combined with our new 701 cowl and firewall forward package our cruise on
amphib floats is 95-100 mph which is greater than many 701s without floats.
We have also introduced a new 1300 amphib float designed specifically for
the maximum gross weight the new LSA rule allows.

Craig & List,
The Manufacturer of the Sun Shades is Koger. I didn't look up their Web
Site.
At OSH I talked about the shades for 601's with John Degonia, Director
of sales and Production Test Pilot for AMD ( the Zenith factory in
Easman Ga. ). John said that he ( they ) were negotiating with Koger
about purchasing a Lot of the shades for resale to folks like us. My
guess is that the end price from either AMD of Koger direct will be
close to the same.
John asked that I give him about a month to pursue this further and then
contact him to see where he has gotten with it. I thought I'd wait until
the end of August before contacting him. When I do, I will post my
findings.

For sealing around the perimeter of the firewall, and firewall penetrations I used
proseal. You can get it in a dispensor and apply it like caulk. The nice thing
is that once it has set up a bit, it has the consistency of putty which makes
it easy to work with in areas you can't easy access with a big dispensor.
Supposedly it can withstand temps up to 2000 deg.

Subject: | Re: CH-801 on floats? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Chris In Madison" <cowens@cnw.com>
Hi Bill,
Are the manuals of which you spoke available in electronic form? I'd love to see
how the manufacturers attach them to the airframe. Did you install the Full
Lotus floats on your 801, or were you just using the manual as a reference?
Mounts rotating behind the bolts seems like a not-so-good thing. I envisioned
a solid, one-piece unit (a "bar" if you will) that went across the entire firewall
with attachment points on either end, allowing the entire airframe to support
the load of the floats.
Of course, this is all speculation as I've never looked hard at the structural
supports for floats on any plane, much less an 801 :-)
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Best regards,
Chris

Subject: | Anyone Ever Use a Smoke Hood? (Magazine Feedback) |
Hello all -
I'm finishing up a piece for Aviation Consumer about smoke escape hoods,
and would like to get your experiences, if any, in actually using an
escape hood. Of course, use in an aircraft would be most germane, but if
you've used one to escape a structure fire of any sort, that would also
be very helpful.
My (non-spam) email is: bootless ((at)) earthlink ((dot)) com.
Thanks very much!
best,

Hello, all
I just finished polishing one of wing skins (rear top, CH601-HD).
The part is about 3' x 8'.
It took me ~1h/sqft, at a cost of CD$1.25 or US$1.10.
Pictures can be seen on the Forum - the URL should be under this msg.
Just click it and you will get there/here (!?!).
(I have never posted on the forum - pictures may be in reverse order.)
The polishing paste is "Mothers", applied with paper towel cut to size.
As the paper gets "loaded" with the black stuff, it is replaced.
Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. ...
Happy building...

Thanks for the information. I got an immediate quote from Nick at
Zenithair via the web/email and the prices were reasonable. So, I'll
change out the platic wheel, axle tire and tube for a new set. The
wheel barrow tire failed on the trailer during transit to Nanaimo,
B.C. (CYCD), and the reason the tire was left on the airplane during
trailering was because the mechanic(s) couldn't get it out of the
fork (so I don't feel so bad having the same problems). The new set
up will be much more secure.

Very flat, not holes.
I have now covered it with plastic, and it will remain like that during all the
drilling,
fitting, deburring, priming, assembling and disassembling.
Same process I used for the tail feathers.
I read a posting a while back (I believe by George Pineo) that polishing it *after*
drilling
makes a fine mess.
