So I've decided to fix it permanently by changing my stock cowling to something better. That better happens to be the new cowling for a Rotax install on the 601XL (the one with the rads up front). Does anyone have such a cowling they would like to sell? Perhaps someone out there has a FW forward kit for a Rotax they decided against? ;) On a whim I called Zenith but they had none in stock since they buy them from Czech aircraft works and we know that arrangement has fallen through. Skyhops in Florida has not returned my calls or email as of yet since they might have them... Don't think you've got a noise problem, but the prop is the greatest contributor noise wise. I fly a Subaru with full muffler system and it's relatively quiet by comparison. I don't think water leakage is a problem either, but I've only been in the rain once and never thought to look for leaks. I was more concerned about the possibililty of spark plugs getting drowned or shorted out. Washing doesn't seem to create any leakage either. Heat from direct sunlight is the worst. I did my test flying period on 85 to 95-degree days and the best advice is to always have a hat. Baseball types are what I wear, but the ears get burned, so I'm looking for a brim hat to replace the ball cap. In higher air, UV is especially bad for the eyes, so be very aware of what you're buying in glasses. The shade is not as important as the UV quality. I keep 3 pair that clip onto the frames each side for flying and motorcycling. No matter what the heat of the day, once you're on the way up it cools nicely if you're wearing a hat. What you describe seems to say the engine feeds from both. That seems awkward for a fuel system. If you can turn the wing tank line on or off and pump fuel to the engine from only the header the system will be easier to keep track of and trouble shoot. He stuck like glue and died in the position he landed. The paint shop said certain flying bugs are attracted to the fumes of acrylic enamel. They said they would repaint the rudder. I told them to leave it there, it adds character. Its not like it can hurts the looks !!! My question. Does anyone recommend a firewall sealant they they were happy with ?? I used Yamaha boots to cover the nose wheel steering arms. But I want to completely seal out any air from entering the cockpit. Also, has anyone used a engine-side insulation blanket to help with heat rejection into the cockpit ? Chris To my knowledge no one has put an 801 on floats. I put my 801 on floats briefly this summer. I used the Full Lotus and Czech Aircraft Works instruction manual and drawings. The front attach points were behind the lower engine mount. The front attach points rotated around the bolts. After looking at the installation I saw too many single point failure places that were not beefy enough for me. I'm going to rethink it the attachment this winter. I think I will develop another attach point just in front of the doors. That should provide some redundancy. I set the angle between the chord and the floats at 6 degrees. But I never even started the engine while it was on floats. At OSH I talked about the shades for 601's with John Degonia, Director of sales and Production Test Pilot for AMD ( the Zenith factory in Easman Ga. ). John said that he ( they ) were negotiating with Koger about purchasing a Lot of the shades for resale to folks like us. My guess is that the end price from either AMD of Koger direct will be close to the same. John asked that I give him about a month to pursue this further and then contact him to see where he has gotten with it. I thought I'd wait until the end of August before contacting him. I'd love to see how the manufacturers attach them to the airframe. Did you install the Full Lotus floats on your 801, or were you just using the manual as a reference? Mounts rotating behind the bolts seems like a not-so-good thing. I envisioned a solid, one-piece unit (a "bar" if you will) that went across the entire firewall with attachment points on either end, allowing the entire airframe to support the load of the floats. Of course, this is all speculation as I've never looked hard at the structural supports for floats on any plane, much less an 801 :-) Thanks for taking the time to reply. I got an immediate quote from Nick at Zenithair via the web/email and the prices were reasonable. So, I'll change out the platic wheel, axle tire and tube for a new set. The wheel barrow tire failed on the trailer during transit to Nanaimo, B.C. (CYCD), and the reason the tire was left on the airplane during trailering was because the mechanic(s) couldn't get it out of the fork (so I don't feel so bad having the same problems). The new set up will be much more secure. I read a posting a while back (I believe by George Pineo) that polishing it *after* drilling makes a fine mess.
