Ron,
I don't know of anyone that has put a type IV engine in the
CH701. There are a few Type I-III VW engines with Valley Eng
redrives, made by the Smiths at Culver Props.
One is my friend B.J. Schwaller, he has a 1915cc VW and redrive on his
701. The plane flys weekly now out of Eldon MO. Pictures of his plane
are in Zenith's Builders secton site......
www.culverprops.com
The Smiths build and sell VW engines, redrives for the VW, and engine
mounts for the 701, and of course really nice wood props.
I was just over to their shop on Wednesday of this week. They had just
finished another engine mount for the VW engine and Diel Case for a 701 in
New Zealand and it was being shipped that day. Also word on an IDAHO 701
builder that was just starting to test fly his 701 with the
Smiths, engine mount and their 2275cc VW engine and redrive Culver Prop
package...........So far he is very happy.
In the next few weeks, hopefully still in Sept. another K.C.Missouri
701 builder is also going to install their complete, mount, engine,
redrive, Culver Prop combo in hsi airplane......

I saw a very simple control lock on a 601 at Oshkosh. I can't recall the
builder's name, but he was based at Osh. Unfortunately I didn't take a
picture of the lock. I drew up a sketch (attached) that should give you the
idea. The dimensions are approximate; some amount of 'eyeball engineering'
is required. I think he had one on each outboard end of the elevator, and
the flaps were retracted with another between each flap and aileron.

Yes, you might seat the rings for the race, but it'll be an oil burning
SOB and the destruction will continue. The oxide lodges in the soft
metals and eats the hard metals. For instance, when you take the pins
out of an oxided engine, the pin bore in the aluminum piston is unworn,
the bronze bush in the rod is unworn, but the hardened steel pin will be
a couple thou undersized after a few hundred miles.
Not stuff you want near an engine that has to last more than one night.
GM has issued warnings to not use scotchbrite cleaning pads as they had
a bunch of warrantee claims from mechanics cleaning the head and block
surfaces with scotchbrite, followed by ring failure.
I'm not such a young fart myself and I've seen the destruction happen. I
have a shelf full of parts from it.

Also don't get any nuts, bolts or washers near an engine either. It only
takes one to destroy an engine, ever drop the wingnut from an old
aftermarket Ford flathead aircleaner into the carb opening of a running
engine ?. NO, well I didn't either but I did help pull the old engine
out & replace it with a new shortblock.
EEGADS.....wingnut, flathead, carburetor, shortblock..... I think I just
dated myself as an old fart.
Old racer trick: New rings not seating, pour some Ajax or Comet in the
carb., with it running of course, engine will not last as long BUT the
rings will be seated for the race tonight. Ajax / aluminum oxide
hummmmm.

Sorry, "near" is an exaggeration. The particular examples I'm painfully
aware of are from a cylinder head porter using aluminum oxide to bead
blast intake runners and ports before applying a thermal coating. What
happens is the alu embeds in the aluminum parts and time releases as the
parts heat cycle. Once it's in the intake stream and into the oil, it
eats all the hard parts. Cylinder walls, crank journals, pins, valve
stems, etc.
On one of the engines I was involved with, the pins had 2 thou of wear
after 125 miles. Car had to come back on a flatbed after 125 miles
because it was pumping so much oil it fouled the plugs.
According to GM, Scotchbrite wheels will accomplish the same damage if
used to clean aluminum engine surfaces. The only way to get the stuff
out of the pores of the aluminum is to jet clean and then ultrasonic
cleaning.

Dear List,
I am a newbie who is shoping for a project and I am considering the XL.I
ask the kit factory if aerobatics are allowed in the XL.I got a
different answer from two people, one of which said mild acro is OK.I
was wondering if many of you use your XL for the ocasional loop or
roll.Has anyone got a straight answer from the designer on this? Thanks,

Jeff, since I'm priming the inside and overlapping surfaces with
self-etching Zinc Oxide (from rattle cans) I feel that scuffing with
sand paper or scotchbrite is a totally unnecessary exercise. Etching the
metal surface produces far more bond than the scratches we could make
with abrasives. I have simply cleaned the surface thoroughly with laquer
thinner then sprayed the primer on. The result has been fine.

Kirk,
Pleased to see you looking at the 601 series. Excellent aircraft. The
advertised g-loading would say any positive loaded maneuvers like the
roll or loop could be
tolerated easily, but I'd not choose the 601 if aerobatics were your
primary interest. The XL wing is much thinner a section than the
previous HD and HDS. Both of these
have thick enough wing to handle loads, but are a bit slower for the
same thickness. I think everyone has done a roll or a loop once or
twice in the XL, but it's the exception
to the kind of flying intended. If you need more detail, you should
speak only to Nick at Zenith. As the principal design engineer, he would
certainly elaborate in greater detail.
Best regards,

Ever since Bill Naumuk convinced me that I could scrap build my center
section and fuselage (after kit building the tail and wings), I have been
known to stare at the ceiling in the middle of the night, visualizing how I
could build flanging dies out of wood.
Not to be outdone by Dave's Cheap Sheet Metal Bending Brake, and in an
obvious effort to take the food right out of the mouths of the babies of
machinists, I finally made, and used (successfully), flanging dies out of
plywood!
I hope the attachments are within the abilities of all to download, and,
since this is my first attempt at attaching an image, I am currently sitting
uncomfortably in my asbestos underwear.
Wood is really what I am most comfortable with. Switching from a Pietenpol
to a 601 was a last minute decision after completing the WW Corvair

I also used wooden flanging dies similar to your's.
The person who made them available to me made them out
of "Russian plywood". He also made all forming blocs
using that material. It is a very good plywood, but I
have no idea where we can find this.
Using them with a hydraulic press was very efficient.

I agree that Russian plywood is really good. It is not the same sort
of low-quality junk plywood available at the Harry Home-owner stores
at all. It is usually at least 7 layers of Birch. You get more
layers as you get thicker plywood. It is also called Nordic Birch
plywood - some of it even comes from countries other than Russia.
I can get it at two different wood stores in Portland, OR. I like
using it for all sorts of stuff around the shop including nice wood
boxes. You can probably find it at higher class hardwood outlets
rather than construction lumber companies.

Subject: | KABONG DRIVING ME FRIGGEN NUTS !!!! |
That is a picture of Quick Draw McGraw , but where doe=92s the KABONG
come into it and what does it stand for? I realize it is a small thing
and I apologize to all you others for wasting your time with this post,
but after reading KABONG for over a year and asking many other members
of this list no one knows! I can go to bed with a problem on the plane
and wake up in the morning with an answer and still get a good nights
sleep. But this has actually kept me up at night trying to figure out a
cryptic meaning for KABONG !!!

You probably didn't watch enough TV or are too young to have seen it!

And the character is so famous, you can find it in Garmin maps:

linked from here:

and now we can archive it.

Subject: | Re: Gary's Cheap Flanging Dies |
Gary and all-
The credit belongs, as it should, to those who came before me.
I learned to scratch build from necessity, and wouldn't have had a
clue if it weren't for the "Old timers". I've said it before and I'll
say it again- Zenith builders are a tiny fraction of the world's
population. We fight like hell (Although the latest Scotchbrite posts
have been relatively tame), but that's because we're brothers, and
brothers fight.
Just finished building a slight modification of Larry Mac's
cruciform jig, leveled and mounted my center wing. 30 hours total, less
than $50 (Only if you make a trip to the scrapyard- buy new steel and
you're screwed). I consider it a necessity. Check out Larry's site- I
can give a few tips, but all the basics are there. His is designed for
an HDS, but you can modify it for an XL.
Waiting for corrosion protectant to dry on aileron bellcranks before
assembly, then tomorrow I start on the fuse!!! (Larry and Jeff, I
figured I'd leave the relief radii until after I rig everything).
One final note. I HIGHLY recommend the Homebuilder's Help DVDs. Wish
I had them years ago. I doubt if Jon and Mark have a single dissatisfied
customer.
Good building!

Ever since Bill Naumuk convinced me that I could scrap build my center
section and fuselage (after kit building the tail and wings)

Mark-
I have no idea if this is relevant, but I've heard KABONG used by
Chick Magee, a radio personality on the rather racy program "The Bob and
Tom Show" I listen to on my commute to work. If I'm right, send the
prize money in small bills, or a complete set of HH DVDs.

I'm thinking of using pressure-treated pine. If you have ever worked with
this, you know that it is very hard.

Subject: | Iridite Wanted to Buy |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "messydeer" <messydeer@yahoo.com>
I'm looking to buy a couple pounds of iridite from somebody. I've used a gallon
of Alodine and am just getting started. My research on iridite a few months ago
came up with only a few sources. I'd have to buy 10# and pay a lot for shipping.
I'm in Bellingham, WA
If that's not possible, maybe you could let me know of some retail sources?
Thanks,
Dan

Subject: | When the rivet hole gets too big |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "lwinger" <larrywinger@gmail.com>
When doing side two of my trailing edge rudder skin, one of my last holes "walked"
on me. It was the end rivet on rear rib #3, and it became oblong in a big
hurry. Ouch.
Since it is in a non-structural area, I'm looking for a good way to recover. BTW,
I'm planning to paint the plane, so I'll have opportunity down the road to
fill and shape if that is required/makes sense.
One lister has already suggested a larger rivet (A5) and JB Weld if there is still
a void. What would you suggest?
