Are there any owners of the AMD-Manufactured Zodiac 601 XL on this discussion group? I expect to take delivery of a new Zodiac from AMD at the beginning of September and I'm looking for any other owners of AMD-made Zodiacs. I know that I'm a bit intimidated by the ambition and skills of all the builders on this discussion group, so maybe there are "lurkers" like me in read only mode. If you wish, you can contact me off-group at fderfler@gmail.com I posted a similar note on the Yahoo discussion group, but haven't found any other "off-the-shelf" Zodiac 601 XL flyers. I would like to talk with anyone using a trim tab on the ailerons due to a wing heavy condition on a CH-701. I've tried twisting the wing via wing struts, checked rigging, slats all within required tolerances. The trim tab seems to be the only option left unless one of the 701 Guru's can come up with another option, thanks RJ

Roger, If you mean a adjustable trim tab why not try just a piece of aluminum riveted to the trailing edge of the aileron on the low wing and put a little bend in it. If that's not enough bend it a little more after each flight. Of course if you carry a passenger you would need an adjustable trim tab. I was warned that my XL might need aileron trim so I am going to install an adjustable as I build Bob Stone, Harker Heights, Tx ZodiacXL ----- Original Message ----- From: Roger Roy To: zenith-list@matronics.com Sent: Friday, September 22, 2006 8:22 AM Subject: Re: Zenith-List: 701 Trim tab I would like to talk with anyone using a trim tab on the ailerons due to a wing heavy condition on a CH-701. Robin: I put the same valve on the firewall and what a hassle to bleed the brakes. In order to get the bubbles out of the valve I have to break the connections at the valve. If doing it again, I would keep the valve on the floor and keep the lines running uphill to the pedals. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Gordon" <cscsail@gmavt.net> I asked Skyshop about the mounting issue that Jeff encountered. I have ordered one of the units and wanted to know what I was up against. Below is his response. Gordon, to answer your question about our electric flap kit for 701, here are our observations: - we have installed over 150 of these in our factory built 701s which were built exactly to Zenith specifications - there have been only 2 cases where customers told us the actuators were too long and in each case there was minor adjustments that needed to be done to the flaperon mixer. Essentially changing the lengths slightly of the all thread which leads to the flaperons. These variations can be attributed to inconsistencies or slight differences during manufacturing. - some builders have tried to put the position sensor on the actuator but the it is only available in one size and small mounting bracket has to be made to accommodate the shorter stroke, it's not possible to put the sensor on the actuator Although we are busy we our new products from CZAW, we are still here to help in support of 701 and 601 builders. (We still have summer discount on selected overstock seats!) Dear Frank, I don't know if your Zodiac is LSA but our family flies a Zenair CH2000 certified trainer and we feel at home in this group of manic and maniac builders. Some stuff you take seriously, and some you just laugh at. There are small numbers of non 601, 701, and 801 members on the list and I am sure many will be anxiously asking for information from your pilot operating handbook. Hello Ernie: Are you looking to ship your newly-assembled rudder as checked baggage? DON'T !! Baggage handlers will make that thing unusable - look what they do to perfectly good luggage !!!! My opinion is to pay the $$$ for crating and shipping and let it go via UPS. Another suggestion is to leave the rudder at Zenith and have them ship it to you with the tail kit you WILL order after you have so much fun at the rudder workshop. Have a GREAT time !! Ernie you probably don't want to hassle with that. It might get mishandled and dented in transit anyway. I foyu are impressed enough to want to order the complete kit or one or more sub-kits, just have Zenith ship the rudder to you with the kit. That's what I did and it arrived nicely padded all safe and sound in the crate. Didn't need the rudder hanging around before the rest of the parts got here and it did not cost any extra to get it here. Enjoy the workshop and I hope you like the demo flight enough to start building the rest. Which plane are you interested in? Hi guys, Back in July I posted a drawing that I made for a proposed 601XL panel on the photo share. http://www.matronics.com/photoshare/dave.thompson@verizon.net.07.04.2006/ As I said in that post, I drew it using Microsoft Visio. I have created a collection of instrument stencils and have shared them with several people on this list. In the Panel outline stencil, I include Q200, 601XL and Pietenpol panel outlines. I have had a request for 701 and 801 panel outlines. Could someone please send me off list a line drawing with measurements of either or both panels? Perhaps a scan from the bulkhead plans page. I will then be able to draw them to the standard scale and add them to the stencils. I still do not have access to an FTP server. With that in mind, I will send anyone a copy of stencils that wants them, but it will come in four e-mails due to the large file size. I will also include an 18 page user guide that I wrote to get you started. If interested, write me off list and I will send them to you. No attached pictures of scotchbrite pads (-: Dave Thompson dave.thompson@verizon.net

Apparently the request to limit the size of pictures is falling on deaf ears. I thought that you had initiated a program that automatically suppressed oversized messages? If in fact you have such a program, it is not working. I contacted my ISP to see if they could screen message size but they claim it can not be done. My next step will be to unsubscribe as I would rather be working on my plane than wasting my time getting these unwanted photos. > >Thank you for your time. > >Dick Neitzel >Sayner, WI >701 builder Dick, Are you sure that your modem didn't connect at a very slow rate for some reason? Below is a listing of all of the enclosures that were posted to the Zenith-List during the Month of September so far. Email encoding might increase the size shown by 30-40%. No given email message was larger than 1MB even with the enclosures. These 22 days adds up to roughly 6 to 9MB total depending on the encoding. Divided by 22 days, that's less than 300,000 bytes per day on the average. Combining today and yesterday's posts, there were only 428KB of enclosures posted to the Zenith-List. During the month of September so far, four posting were rejected due to a message size that exceeded the 1MB limit. Respectively, these four email message sizes were: 1.4MB, 1.6MB, 1.08MB, and 1.6MB. So, even if the rejected messages had made it though, the total impact would have still have been minimal. I am suspecting either that your modem is connecting at a very slow rate (2400 baud) instead of 28,800 or 57,600 which is substantially increasing your download times. Or, you are receiving email from another source other than the Matronics Lists that contains large enclosure data (perhaps some spam messages that are being automatically redirected to a trash folder.) Hope this helps you track down the problem. Best regards, Matt Dralle Emacs!

That is stronger than the RV's or Sonex, which are rated at +6 -3 g and that is at a reduced weight. That said, I'm sure it is capable of aerobatics, but the question is "How well does it do them?" I have about 2.5 hours of aerobatic instruction plus spin training and really enjoy it. I'm not interested in competition or extreme maneuvers, but enjoy an occasional loop or roll and combinations thereof. I've read many accounts from RV and Sonex pilots about how pleasant their planes are to fly in aerobatics, but I've never read any from Zenith pilots. I did read that Chris Heintz said (off the record) that the 601 is very pleasant in aerobatics, but I've never read any other comments. I have searched the archives, but didn't find anyone that said they had done aerobatics. C'mon guys, surely SOMEONE has. Breathes there a man with soul so dead That never to himself has said "Hey what happens if I do this" (With apologies to Sir Walter Scott) I am trying to decide between a Zenith and a Sonex. The Zenith seems preferable as a plane for cross country, but I just want to do something different once in a while. My final choice will probably be based on whether and how well (in terms of pleasant handling) the Zenith will do aerobatics. Hello Roger, My 701 flys hand off once in cruise, is a little heavy to a side only at power (climb) given the engine torque. In your plane has to be something with the rigging or the assemble of the wings... I note in your address that is a Savannah... Probably is the same or very similar construction in the wings as the 701, given is a pirate copy of the 701. Start with the most easy: messurements of the wings with the fusselage perfectly level. and the stabilator level also with the fuselage. Then find a way to see if the wings are not twisted when assembly, I dont know how to do it installed... This is checked in the assemble table before installed in the fusselage. Depends the amount of "heavyness" of the wing when flying, is how dangerous could be to continue fly it now the way it is.
