My engine is ready for first fire and I'd like to start it in my driveway before installing my wings. Has anybody done this? Did it work out OK? I just want to run my engine for about 20 minutes to break it in before bringing it to the airport and installing the wings. No offense intended but please don't reply if you just have an opinion. I've been inundated with opinions from my local EAA buddies and I'm getting some pretty mixed signals. I don't want to re-create that here on the email list. I'd like to hear from folks who have 601XL's and running engines. Again, I don't want to start a debate, just cold, hard facts from those who have been there and done that (or chosen not to). Or will you be using the nose bowl, shroud and baffling? And he really really recommends the prelube with the dummy distributor and electric drill. I would ensure my CHT, oil pressure and oil temp sensors and my EMS were reading true before such a long run. Stick the oil temp sender in boiling water, test the spark plug thermocouples with a source of heat in the expected temperature range, etc. Otherwise I don't see how what you are planning to do differs from running your engine on a test stand (which many have done). Far better to find any leaks, bugs, overheating etc before it is away at the airport. Hope all goes well! Scott-- No opinion--just fact. I did my first runup on my 912 in my driveway. No wings and no canopy. That last part was interesting. I tied the main landing gear to a tree and choked all the wheels. My main interest was to insure that I did not have any leaks with all the hoses used on the 912. Make sure you have a couple of good fire extinguishes available--just in case. I used a 5 gallon plastic gas can with 3 gallons in it for my main fuel source and insure that it was secured against being blown over. Everythinng worked fine--no fire no leaks but it sure was windy without the canopy. I've since repeated a similar runup but this time I tied the plane to the trailer hitch on my truck. Worked fine. If not go ahead but be very careful especially when neighborhood children are around. A spinning prop cannot be seen and all neighbors are going to be interested in what you are doing. When I broke in the Rotax 503 engine on my ultra-not-so-light, I tied it to the basketball goal post at the edge of my driveway. It had stood up to a direct hit from Hurricane Lili that shredded my shingles so I figured it was strong enough. The break in was an hour long schedule of various rpm settings for specified lengths of time. There was a roofing crew working on the house across the street and when the hour was up and I shut it down, there was a collective "ThankGod!" from the roofers. On the practical side, I had my wife reading out the rpm/time schedule via the intercom and a friend on guard duty watching to make sure no neighborhood kids got near the sawhorse and folding table barricades that we set up for a safety zone. If you have enough security staff for safety and no local noise ordinances and the blessings of your neighbors, go for it. If any of those are missing, don't do it. I assured them it would be in the middle of the day and I would make sure I had plenty of help so their would be no chance someone would get hurt. Several of them actually volunteered, they have never seen an aircraft actually being built so they are very interested. I do not plan on contacting the police because they are not likely to show up without a complaint. I am waiting on a couple of parts from William Wynne and a carburetor, then it will be time to turn the key on my Corvair. I have had a lot of delays for various reasons but I am beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully I will be flying soon. First flight of 1 hour was completed on Sep 26. Everything went well except for the last 5 minutes. The plane handled well with no surprises, aerodynamically that is. The nose seems a little heavy in the sense that I ran out of up trim. Will work on that. Had just finished a stall check and was adding power for climb when the engine started running rough above 4000 RPM. I have the Suzuki 1.6 liter engine and up to that point it had performed flawlessly. Thankfully I was only a couple of miles from the air field positioned for a straight in approach and landed without incident. Haven't sorted the problem out yet. Like others before me, that first flight of my own creation was fantastic. It seems like I should turn the units so the float is near the front of the tank so that it will read full when it really is completely full since the tank is tapered. Any thoughts or suggestions? After driving down to California yesterday and touring the shop, I decided to order an Xtreem IO-360 from Eagle Engines. (which I did today).
