Especially for builders, who has GSC's 3-blade wood propeller on your CH701
with R912 or R912S.
Could you get answer for few question:
- Diameter of your propeller 68", 72"....
- Engine type (912, 912S, 914 other...)
- Blade angle (if flying or tested or....)
- Cruising speed (if flying...)

It's most important for the gauge to read accurately near the bottom
of the scale, that's when you really need to know how much fuel you
have left. If it takes a while to move off the full mark, it's not a
big deal.

Unfortunatly I had a gsc propellor on my ch701 with a 582.
There ar ADs on these propellors and if it has ever been out in the weather
I would change it. I had
a catastrophic blade failure which also took the top of the gearbox with
the second blade.
the prop was well within the ad time less than 200 hrs.
Landed heavily in a cane paddock and took a year to rebuild and re engine
with a 912.and cost plenty .
It would have much much cheaper to throw away the gsc propellor.
I suggest a composite bladed propellor not clamped wood, wood is subject to
weather and shrinkage and expansion etc
sorry for the bad report.

Members,
I would like to hear from any of you guys/gals who are running a
Jabiru 3300 engine on your aircraft. I have heard there is no
requirement for a manual mixture control and would like to know if this
is true and if so, how does the system work when changing altitude.

It is correct and it is becuase the engine has a pressure compnesating carb.

This didn't sound good at all! Yes, this is a brand new one.
If this is a really true problem with this propeller, I will let
it stay on the wall as an ornament.

Gig,
Could you explain how the system works. I have never heard of a
pressure compensating carb. Does this mean the carb has a built in sensor
that works off of barometric pressure like an altimeter to provide the
correct mixture at whatever altitude one is flying?

The Bing carburetor on the Jabiru 3300 is a "self compensating" model which supposedly
does as good a job of adjusting mixture for chnges in altitude as most
pilots could/would do inflight with a manual mixture control. There is an ongoing
debate as to whether it really does a good enough job, whether good enough
is good enough, and whether a pilot can do it better with a manual mixture control.
For the mechanical details of how it works, email Pete Krotje at Jabiru USA. The
email address is
info@usjabiru.com
Pete is good about responding to customers and potential customers and can do a
better job of explaining how the ambient pressure change adjusts the mixture.
Coincidentally the Rotax 912S uses two Bing self compensating carbs.
Hope that helps,
Ed Moody II
PS: How's the learning progressing with the Lowrance 2000C?

5 years ago that same prop mounted on an S-10 #3 blade seperated. The The
aircraft was rounding to final alt 550 ft the fatal crash was 800 ft from
runway. FAA investigators still to this day cannot close this case, many of
us that were using this prop removed them and as you suggested became wall
mounted decorations. Having said this there are many who swear by them and
that's OK too but since it happen to one of our club members we think
differently. Cheer

There are warnings not to let the GSC sit out in the sun or fly it in
the rain. I sewed up a prop cover from some "sumbrella" fabric, and have
noticed no degradation in 1.5 years......

I was wondering the same thing about the jabiru 2200. This person
attached his 701 to a park bench and let her rip. Could one taxi with
brakes and rudder and no wings??? I have a small strip I could taxi on
---might frighten the cows--- Actually they probably would come running.
I made sure my computer down sized the picture. I already got trashed
once in hi school.

Subject: | Oil pressure Rotax 912 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Klaus Truemper <klaus@utdallas.edu>
Hi,
I am trying to get information about the wear of the oil pump of the
Rotax 912
engine. If you have at least 500 hrs on the engine, would you mind telling:
total hrs of engine:
oil pressure (psi) with
engine cold:
hot:
Oil type (e.g. 10W40):
I would like to compare that with my engine, which after about 1000 hrs
shows
for cold engine an oil pressure of 36 psi and for hot engine 32 psi.
The engine shows no other sign of wear. In particular, compression
and performance are unchanged.
Thanks for helping with this.
Best wishes,
Klaus Truemper

Providing you have brakes that work, taxiing without wings is no problem....all
you really have is an engine test stand on wheels which is also equipped with
a nice seat.
It helps to have the windshield in place if you plan to ride in it.
Otherwise, tie the main gear to something that won't move and run the engine.
Be aware that prop blast tends to fill the 701 fuselage if no windshield exists.
One fellow also put a spring scale in line with his rope and determined the "thrust".
Some may mention oil temperature......don't worry. Just stop testing if it begins
to get too hot; same thing you'd do if it got too hot in flight.
Enjoy.

Hi Tom,
I called ZAC today to ask them. Not sure who I talked to, but since he had
an accent I figured it was someone important. He said to just mount it
spanwise, which is what I thought it should be also, but I'm always open to
suggestions and someone else's experience.

Hey guys, there's an easier way than having to work up a nosepiece
to fit your job. Several years ago somebody on this list came up with
an easy way: As I recall, it went like this: 1: Using the appropriate
size bit, drill a hole lengthwise into a chunk of bolt or round bar. 2:
Cut the bolt or bar to an appropriate length, on a slant that will give
you room for the riveter. Cup the slanted end as with the nosepiece. 3:
Slip the mandrel through your "new nosepiece", and into the riveter,
putting a slight bend in the mandrel. You then get a pull perpendicular
to the work, with your riveter on a slant. I had several rivets that I
needed to do this, and it worked.

Very neat Dino. I wish I had the equipment to turn that drawing
into a steel nose piece. My file and hand drill made one, but not
anything that looked as good as your drawing.

Listers,
A few additional comments about GSC props. I have the fiberglass inlaid
leading edges on my 3 blade GSC mounted on a Rotax 912UL (80 HP). I had been
warned not to fly it in the rain back when I started operating the prop (
nearly 10 years now). Got caught in a couple minor showers during the first
500 hours. I kept the airplane under a roof, with the blades covered with
some covers I got from the Kitfox folks. But the afternoon sun hit the
airplane every afternoon. I remember receiving info saying that GSC wanted
the prop back at their facility at 500 hours or 5 years. I stretched it out
to 9 years and 500 hours. The hub looked fine but the blades needed
refinished at least thats what I thought. When I removed the prop and
disassembled it for shipping I found the bolts that pass though the wood
blades at the inboard end were in sad shape but not ready to fail.
When the prop arrived at GSC, Rick called me and recommended new blades. He
said it wouldn't be economically viable to to redo the blades. I went with
that when he discounted the new blades in price. I've since reinstalled the
prop but plan to remove it at 500 hours (1000 A/C hours) at least to check
those bolts. The airplane is now in a hangar and I believe the blades will
hold up much better.
One other thing I discovered; I torqued the attach bolts originally in warm
weather. When it turned cold, I found a couple of the had loosened. I do a
regular torque check to prevent this from recurring.
To conclude, since the GSC prop came with the kit, I used it. It runs
smooth, doesn't weigh much and with care, should do the job. I'm sure there
are other great choices out there. If I were building from scratch or didn't
get the FWF Kit from ZAC I would look at several choices.

Sorry for the off topic question, but I figured some of you might be able to direct
me on this issue. I'm considering buying a plane and leasing it back to a
flight school, and want to know (1) if anyone has ever been through this process
before, and if so, can it be profitable or at least a break-even, or (2) is
there some other aviation discussion forum where this question would be better
posted? I'm thinking about maybe a C-172 or similar, where I can have a 4-seater
at my disposal when I need it, yet have it rented when I'm not using it
(which would be most of the time). Please reply off list to rsq2424@yahoo.com.

Milburn,
Just don't leave your airplane out in the pasture with the cowling
off. At one time I had a Buckeye Dream Machine flying parachute and
broke one of the fiberglass axels when I landed to hard. A friend of
mine and I went to look for a crow bar or something like one to help pry
the cart onto the trailer. While we were gone the cows came over and
started chewing up the wiring. I ended up replacing the axel and also
all of the wiring.

I have G6, C, and S Nuvite, but they don't cut it (Pun intended).
I'm not worried about cleaning things up afterwards, but can't find a

I tried automotive polishing compound (Dupont) and it's about the

I'm going to try Dupont automotive rubbing compound tomorrow if no

I find that Mothers is very quick for the "first cut". It takes a while longer

You might want to give it a shot, the small pot sells for ~CDN$8.00.
