Has anyone directly used the 5-amp rocker switch from Ray Allen for
controlling the flaps on an XL (without any relays), or does anyone know
what the draw is of the standard flap motor? Ray Allen state that the switch
is good for higher current uses like flap motors, but Zenith now specify
15amp fuse on the flap circuit, which makes me wonder whether the RA switch
could handle the load.

Subject: | Ray Allen Aileron Trim |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: nick@aoaircrafters.com
Guys,
I've got a Zodiac 601 HD with Ray allen trim servos (elevator and
aileron). When I received the project, I noticed two long springs
located just behind the pilot/copilot seats- one was attached to the
aileron trim servo and the other was attached to an aluminum tab on the
left of the fuselage. The loose spring ends were clamped to the aileron
cables. The springs crossed each other in the middle of the the
fuselage so that one spring would oppose the other spring.
When the pilot actuated the aileron trim servo one spring would put
pressure on the aileron cable; therefore, the pilot would be able to
have aileron trim control. Does this make sense- I don't know if I
adequately described the system?
-Has anyone seen this kind of aileron trim setup on a 601?
-Does the 601 HD need aileron trim?
-Does anyone have finished pictures/diagrams of this aileron trim setup?
-Can anyone suggest a calibration method for this aileron trim setup?
Thanks much,
~Nick Helsper

OK Dave,
I know this isn't Zenith related, (or is it, as there have been
discussions about cold weather starting of engines, and snow piled on
planes, setting the CG off, and setting them on their tail)
I had 30" of snow last Wednesday/Thursday, that puts me to a total of
48" since September 21st. with the temps already hitting the single
digits, but.. upper teens for the normal night-time lows.
Going to get some more Aluminum next week from ALERO, 11299 Brighton
Road, Henderson, CO 80640, 303-287-7210, (Northeast Denver area), to
start the rear fuselage

I'm working feverishly to finish my cowl retrofit from Europe now

I have mine set up just like yours, the battery is behind the passenger
seat with the master relay right beside it. The starter current passes
through the master on the way to the starter. I've had no trouble with
it for 2 years and 175 hours of flight time. most of the wiring diagrams
i have seen have this configuration. As for putting the starter relay
back behind the seat with the master, that isn't practical since my
starter relay is built in to my starter.

any uncontrolled heavy wire to go from the battery area to the firewall (to limit
the amount of cable that can cause me real problems if it shorts out). So,
I want my master solenoid to be right next to the battery. If I connect my
starter to the battery, without passing through the master solenoid, then I would
have to run an uncontrolled heavy wire from the battery to the engine this
would completely negate any advantage of having the solenoid next to the battery.

Subject: | Re: Main Gear Orientation (was) Zenairs & Snow, |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "T. Graziano" <tonyplane@bellsouth.net>
For what its worth:
I have a Jab 3300 and Aux tanks installed in my XL, and my CG is really
great for all normal loading conditions and fuel states (weird loadings or
child weight pilots with full fuel not considered).
I have seriously considered turning my main gear around to meet the latest
dwg, thus moving the wheel CG location a little more forward because:
1. I have to pull the aircraft off the runway to become airborne,. It will
not fly itself off. (my inflight trim is alomst zero on the trim tab),
This is no big deal though, but
2. For my XL, I found during test flight that if you set up a high sink
rate above stall speed airspeed condition esp with flaps to let the aircraft
land itself ( an "arrival" as you can do in a Cessna vice a regular
landing ) you will be bounced into the air and flying again with PIO
potential. Going into my third progessively hard bounce (great nose gear,
but I have an 801 nose fork with 6x600 tires) I realized what was happening
and flew out of the condition - I had never before gotten into a PIO
situation. I encountered this situation twice more since test flights (but
not recently- I did learn really watch my landing airspeed more closely when
using flaps. As an aside, I can land my airplane at high airspeed without
flaps, just watch that sink rate).
3. On my XL, I can not hold the nose off on landing - once the mains are on
the ground the nose WILL immediately come down. with only my 195 lb self
onboard
I have put the following statement in my POH
CAUTION
WATCH SINK RATE AND AIR SPEED: with the landing gear geometry of 493TG, a
High sink rate combined with High air speed at touch down will result in the
nose gear hitting the runway HARD. and bouncing the airplane airborne. IF
THIS HAPPENS - GO AROUND or initiate a BOUNCE RECOVERY! Pilot Induced
Oscillation (PIO) can result under this condition if landing is attempted.

On this note of the plane on balance- The plans for the 601 xl show the
flat part of the main gear facing forward, yet other planes are facing back.
I called the shop and they put the flat part forward based on the Jabiru
being heavier and the plane would fly off on take off versus having to
unstick it. Any thoughts, mine is in place flat side forward. but if push
comes to shove I can turn the mains araound.

Hi Dave,
I've been playing the temperature game since it dropped into the 30s.
Trying to finish painting the trim color on the plane.
The garage furnace can keep up when it's 50 or so, but this week is
taking a dip. My paint needs 70 degrees minimum.
It's getting to be a contest between temps and readiness.

Subject: | 801 Firewall Forward |
I am thinking about ordering the rest of my kit. Fuselage, gear and
controls. Mainly so I can have it paid for before I spend the money on
the house or bills or something frivolous like that. Also, maybe the
firewall forward kit. I'd like to know who might have ordered this kit
from ZAC? Since I don't want to go tracking down parts that I don't know
enough about I will more than likely do it this way. I know there is no
such thing as just bolting it together right out off the box but Iwould
like an opinion from anyone that has done it this way. I am using an
I0-360.

If you install the wing locker hinge as per the drawing (using shims) the rolled
part of the hinge will project about 0.065 " above the skin surface. If you
turn it the hinge over you will have a slot in the wing.
Echoing Burbby's question, did any of you do anything different or do you just
live with the portruding hinge?

I would be reluctant to try these out. If the 701 was meant to fly with VG's
and without slats, I'd bet Chris would have designed it that way.
Just my opinion of course.

Hi Tim,
For my money, the amount of hinge protruding into the airstream from
the locker hinge is about the same as all the rivet heads. I did
mine as close to the plans as I could.

Dan,
Suggest you look back in the archives. A former list member, Frank Hinde,
had a good argument that instead of an expensive valve it was better to use
one facet fuel pump per tank feeding through into the gascolator. The trick
was choosing the right pump: check valve, unpowered flow rate etc. You'll
find the details in the archive. Frank had a 601HDS which didn't gravity
feed as the 801 should so his decision criteria may have been different from
yours.

Paul,
Originally my plan was just that. Two valves would select between inboard or outboard
on the left and right, then a third valve to select right or left. When
I found out Andair had a 5 way selector, it sounded like easier fuel management,
so I went that way. The problem was that the dealer was not willing to
abide by the advertised price, but doubled it before delivery. So now I'm back
to looking at the alternatives.
One suggestion was to use fuel pumps and check valves for each tank. I don't like
that solution. I'd rather the fuel pumps (there will be a main and backup)
pull the fuel from the tanks rather than push. I'd rather not have the fuel
under pressure going through the cabin. Just my preference.. it seams safer.

It's not that I don't want the slats, it's just that the claim of increased efficiency
and retention of STOL characteristics is intriguing. The website seems
pretty sincere, and I have since exchanged email with an Aussie 701 owner who
has logged 100+ hours with VGs instead of slats, and is happier with the performance.

One more thing, Joe,
Be sure to check (or at least consider) the weight and balance if you decide to
try it.. I was reminded by the factory that removing slats will move the CG rearward,
as they have some weight and they are forward of the CG.
By the way the factory clearly discourages this configuration. However I am considering
giving it a try too when the VGs are available. Several people have
tried it without the VGs and reported bad results, but survived, and duplicating
the VG installation probably limits the risk quite a bit.

I've thought about pumps instead of valves to select tanks (or feed a header
tank). One problem I see is with a loss of the electrical system. A
magneto-based engine will keep running without external electrical power and
with a mechanical fuel pump (or gravity feed) won't need power for
electrical fuel pumps. But without a mechanical valve (or valves) you won't
have access to all your tanks (or possibly any tanks).

About 75 F in Amado AZ. Great morning at the airport working on airplane in
T shirt and shorts. Did wear sweat shirt when I arrived at 06:30 as the sun
was just coming up and it was about 45F. Typical for Nov and part of Dec.
Might get cold in late Dec, Jan and early Feb. Ha.
Don't forget to put Do Not Archive for non airplane stuff. Hope it does not

That sounds like a false economy to me - mishandling multiple tanks causes a
lot of accidents. I'd spring for the valve.
Andair's 4 tank valve (FS20x8M) appears to cost about $279 direct from
Andair: www.andair.co.uk. I'm in the US and have successfully ordered from
their UK web site.

They should be maroon Scotch Brite pads... Just joking, I won't go there.
The solenoids are completely sealed so they can and in most applications
are, attached to the outside of the battery box.
Years ago I got my first amateur radio VHF radio..... Now I'm talking about
close to a 50 pound box in the back of my big V8 station wagon. I had to be
very careful not to broadcast too long because the thirsty tubes in that old
45 rig could suck a battery, any battery, dry in short order. That old rig
had lots of open relay contacts and more than one Mountie lost the whole
back of his car when the spark from those relays was able to ignite a whiff
of gas from any small leak in the gas tank.

If Spruce doesn't come through (I don't know what they stock) order direct
from Andair - they stick by the prices listed on their web site. I've
ordered valves directly from them twice and the prices were correct and the
shipping to the US not significant. It is especially useful to order custom
configurations from them and their web site has a series of slick screens
that allow you to build your valve.
No, I don't work for them.

repeated advice was to push fuel and not to pull it. The rationale was that
pulling it could cause vapor lock. Search the archives for lots of posts on
this. The advice was to place the fuel pump as close to the tank as
possible being careful to measure how high the pump would lift the fuel to
where it was going. Depending on the pump, the pressure may only be in the
range of 2 to 4 pounds (PSI). The bing carby likes about 3 for instance.

One suggestion was to use fuel pumps and check valves for each tank. I
don't like that solution. I'd rather the fuel pumps (there will be a main
and backup) pull the fuel from the tanks rather than push. I'd rather not
have the fuel under pressure going through the cabin. Just my preference..
it seams safer.

Craig,
Jabiru for instance puts the electric pump and mechanical engine
fuel pump in series. There have been several reports on this list of
builders that only use the electrical pump for take-off & landing. The
mechanical pump can be enough in normal flight. The Facet pumps are made
for continuous operation however, so you can have it both ways if you want.
If the power goes, you are down to what some folks normally rely on: the
mechanical pump.
In the configuration that was referred to, the lines from both tanks
were open to the engine through a T or Y, but only the tank with the
operating fuel pump was pushing fuel up to the engine. The problem as I saw
it was how to cut off the fuel to the engine during emergency procedures
without a selector or cut-off valve.

Isn't it possible that with one electric pump pushing and the other not the
pull from the mechanical pump would draw from both tanks? This depends on
just which Facet pump is used. Some have check-valves, some have anti-siphon
valves, some have both, some have neither:

I just find a system with a selector valve simpler.

Hello list, It is unlikely that a non slat wing will have the climb angle of
a slatted wing. If you disagree with the Heintz design then do your own then
you will understand.
