Hi Gang
Can someone tell me the Rudder Pedal travel (deflection) from the Neutral position.
The plans show neutral as 200 mm from the firewall.
I am fitting the Duel brake cylinders and one of them (LH) is hitting the rudder
pedal bar. I can reposition the lower LH cylinder bracket, but I need to know
how much to move it aft and that depends on the amount of travel (deflection)
needed. Its easier to do it now than when I have built the plane and fit the
rudder cables.

Subject: | Re: What should the empty CG be for the 601XL? |
How comes that the XL can have an approved C.G. range of 300 - 450 mm in the U.S.
(MTOW = 600 kg) and a much better range of 300 - 520 mm in the U.K. (MTOW =
560 kg)?
Link to PFA (UK) Zodiac XL type certificate:
The C.G. range is a matter of aerodynamics and not of the MTOW-limit. The MTOW
mainly depends on structural strength (mainly wing bending which is the limiting
factor for the XL maximum loading). Or am I not right?
Is there anybody who can explain? Is it perhaps because of the elongated elevator-trim-tab
(over the whole left elevator width)?
Cheers from Switzerland

Gents,
I passed my airworthiness inspection today. I was hit on the following
items:
-Aileron pushrod heim bolts had one thread showing; needed two.
-Trim indicators were not labeled.
-Wiring under the control stick was a bit sloppy. Cleaned up with a few tie
wraps.
-Did not have a pouch in the cockpit for the registration and airworthiness
paperwork.
-this pouch must be visible from outside the cockpit...
-I had a few unused holes in the floor that must be sealed. (CO levels in
C/P)
Overall, it was a good experience. All of his hits were quite valid,
and caught a few things that I either overlooked, or was sloppy. If taxi
tests go well in the morning, first flight will be tomorrow afternoon.

Subject: | LRI Probe location |
Good day listers, I'm actually building my wings (both at the same time
since I have 2 tables).
As I am looking forward to install a LRI (Lift Reserve Indicator) on my
701, I wondered if it would be indicated to prepare ahead of time for
the installation of the probe (cutting the opening for the probe and
installing the vinyl tubing inside the wing before skinning).
Now my question; Where exactly do I cut the opening for the probe ? ie
beside wich rib and how far from the leading edge ? How big of an
opening ?
Thanks kindly for any infos.

I have my XL rudder pedals centered 220mm from the firewall and maximum
travel is 155mm to 280mm from firewall. This is with the nosewheel
installed and not the rudder, so this is maximum travel as limited only
by the nosewheel. I assume the rudder stops will provide some further
travel limitation.

Hi Jean-Paul,
I mounted mine in pretty much the same place as the pitot-static
probe except on the other wing. I mounted both of them on
"Inspection plates" to prevent damage while moving the wing around
before final use.
I don't remember exactly where on the chord the probe was mounted. I
think I remember some direction on this question on the LRI drawings.
Good luck,

Subject: | placing tank on CH601-HD wing |
This is something I need to ask ZAC, but while I wait for Monday, I would like
to have the list's input.
The schematics I have show the leading edge tank in place between ribs, and, on
the far end (from the fuse), supported on the side by one l-angle attached to
the adjacent rib, and by two l-angles forming a "Z", attached to the spar (see
attached diagram).
The opposite end of the tank has no such supports.
The question is, Have you added similar supports?
Comments, anyone?

=0A remember reading where some have had this experience with roll
ed 0.040" =0A sheets.. but...=0A=0A Here is my story....
=0A=0A I figured that I could get by with a 34" dia. roll, and tha
t would fit =0A inside my Expedition easy. Well, the 2 guys at "AL
RECO" (in North =0A Denver) "cha-ching plug" started rolling it an
d got it to 24" easily. I =0A then put on a couple of ratch-straps
, snugged it down and then used it =0A to hold everything else thi

sheets of 0.016" and let them coil inside the 0.040". =0A The whol
e package could have fit inside the back of my Subaru Baja, but =0A
I didn't want to get to Denver and find out that it couldn't. I also
got =0A the following 2'x4' sheets 0.063", 0.090", and 0.125". an
d then I got =0A the Zenith approved 3/4"x3/4"x0.125" Aluminum ang
le. (3-25' sticks cut =0A into 13' and 12' sections) All of this,
plus tax, was $700.60. Add in a =0A $25 bill for gas, and I think
that I got by fairly cheap. Aircraft =0A Spruce, was wanting a for
tune to ship a 4'x12' pallet for the 0.040" =0A since they wouldn'
t roll it for me.=0A=0A Now for the unrolling.....=0A With
my wife's help, here is the way we unrolled this tightly coiled =0A
spring. I used a couple of hand clamps, (the ones you squeeze togeth
er =0A by hand) positioned about 180degrees from the end. We poppe
d loose the =0A ratchet straps while doing the best we could of ho
lding on also, along =0A with the clamps. We then unrolled the rol
l until the clamps were on the =0A bottom. Then we grabbed 2 more
clamps and clamped close to where the =0A existing clamp was, but
made sure we just clamped the coil that was =0A still wound up. Th
en we undid the first clamps and rolled another 3/4 =0A roll and d
id the same thing over again. Since the thinner sheets were =0A sh
oved inside the heavier, we still had the thinner sheets to unwrap. We
=0A clamped the interior rolls, and carried the spool back to the
beginning =0A of the table and did the same thing for the 0.025".
Then unrolled the =0A 0.016" by hand.Anyway, it is an idea that m

Subject: | STATIC PORT LOCATION???? |
Zodiac 601's,
I wish to place a static port on my Zodiac 601 HD. The construction
manual recommends placing the static port next to the pitot tube in the
right wing; however, the wing is already closed up, so this location is
off limits.
My only alternative is to either leave out the static port or place the
static port in a different location. For various reasons, I have
decided to place a single static port somewhere on the fuselage sides.
I recently purchased a static port from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty.
Does anyone know of a proven location (an accurate location) for the
placement of a flush mounted static port?
Thanks mucho,
~Nick

I am plumbing up my fuel lines and have run into a problem with the ZAC supplied
fuel lines, connectors, etc. I thought someone who has been there/done that,
would be a good solution (I also emailed Support@zenithair.com). The inlet
side of the fuel pump is a 5/16 nipple and the outlet side is a 1/4 nipple. All
the material I got in my kit is for a 1/4 plumbing scheme. I'm wondering what
some of you did to your lines when you plumbed the fuel system.
Thanks,

Subject: | placing tank on CH601-HD wing |
Carlos,
My LE tank manual "supplement" for the HD wings shows the same.
Mine is one page of hand written drawings, but with the current telephone
number in Mexico, MO. What you describe is in the lower left corner of the
supplement. If you look very carefully, the L that creates the second
flange for the "new" nose rib at station 170 is on the detail at the far
right of the page. On the larger drawing in the center, if you look at the
area that is detailed on the lower right of the page, it shows a single L
close to the fuel cap. At the other end of the tank in the drawing, there
is an L in a circle pointing to a location very close, but not on the new
nose rib. At that location, I made another "Z" using 2 l-angles to hold
that end of the tank away from the spar. The drawing in that area is partly
obscured by the spar doublers.
This is a long way of saying that I just put a second Z made up of 2 Ls
at the fuselage end of the fuel tank and a strip of cork on the tank at both
locations.

Tommy, the only thing I did to my lines to and from the pump was to
cover them in firesleeve to prevent the fuel from boiling and causing
vapour lock. It can get pretty hot under that cowl.

Subject: Zenith-List: LRI Probe location
Good day listers, I'm actually building my wings (both at the same
time since I have 2 tables).
As I am looking forward to install a LRI (Lift Reserve Indicator) on
my 701, I wondered if it would be indicated to prepare ahead of time for
the installation of the probe (cutting the opening for the probe and
installing the vinyl tubing inside the wing before skinning).
Now my question; Where exactly do I cut the opening for the probe ?
ie beside wich rib and how far from the leading edge ? How big of an
opening ?
Thanks kindly for any infos.

Nick,
I put my static port on the side of the fuselage a couple of feet forward
of the horizontal stab. This is the same location as I remembered on the T-34C.
I performed taxi tests today, and got airborne for a couple thousand feet
a couple of times. The airspeed seemed to be tracking very well, very close
to the GPS indicated speed plus headwind. I can't quite call it proven yet,
but give me a few days... I have to work out some carburetor issues before I
am willing to take it to altitude. Don't fret, most low wing aircraft have the
static ports on the aft fuselage.

If the question related to the two different size nipples, just push the hose
on the larger one with some 'slick-um' and clamp as usual. Use the firesleeve,
too.

Subject: | Re: Rotax 912 Fuel Pump Inlet/Outlet |
Tommy,
I have the main and aux tanks for my 701. I have 1/4 inch hose from the
tanks to the
gascolaters mounted behind the seat, one for inboard tanks and the other for
outboard tanks.
Since the 912 pump input is 5/16 I figured I'd just make everything 5/16
from the outlet of these gascolaters. This makes 2 1/4 inch lines feeding 1 5/16
line right up to that fuel pump. I switched all brass fittings with 5/16 ones
from_ McMaster Carr_ (http://www.mcmaster.com/) (catalog page 239). They
sell them in 10 packs or 5 packs depending on if they are straight, right angle
or 45 deg. They are relatively inexpensive, and you can get them in 1/4 or
1/8 npt depending on what you need. I come out of the gascolaters(1/8 npt)
into the fuel selector(2 right angle 1/4 npt) just in front of the pilots seat.
Output of selector is 45 deg 1/4 npt.Then into a _10 micron 6061-T6 aluminum_
(http://www.golanproducts.com/)
filter with 5/16 barbs built into it only 6 inches away from the selector. I
run up the left side with 5/16 line purchased from _Wicks Aircraft goodyear
30R7 _
(http://www.wicksaircraft.com/catalog/product_detail.php/pid=14521~subid=7162/index.html) to a _Facet 10405_
(http://www.wicksaircraft.com/catalog/product_detail.php/pid=4928~subid=1410/index.html) aux pump in
front of the rudder pedals mounted on the floor. The facet input is a right
angle 5/16 1/4 npt fitting and the output is a strait one. Then into a fuel
flow sensor for my GRT EIS with strait fittings. Then thru the firewall via an
_ACS Gascolater_
(http://www.wicksaircraft.com/catalog/product_detail.php/pid=5015~subid=1434/index.html) . The output of the gascolater has a 5/16 right
angle 1/4 npt and the input has a strait fitting. Then on up and over to the
5/16 mechanical fuel pump input. I am using firesleeve on the 5/16 and 1/4
hose firewall forward. I did not get any 5/16 fittings from Zenith or any 5/16
hose.
This is probably more info than what you needed but I'm just putting this
out there for others and if anyone has a problem with this let me know.

Subject: | aircraft inspection |
Hello,
I have a 701 tail kit on the way and I'm looking forward to building this
fine aircraft. I was curious about the inspection process of a all metal
aircraft. With tube and fabric it is pretty easy to perform a pre-cover inspection,
how is this accomplished with metal? Does each component have to be
inspected before closing or does photo documentation suffice?
Thanks,
Ben

I don't think pre-cover inspections are needed in the USA any
more. I am sure there is no such requirement for all metal aircraft
like the 701.

Ben,
Pre-cover inspections are not required in the US. You are supposed to record
your own pre-cover inspections in your builder's log. I did not know that
and did not do it. Which is why I am very glad that I used my EAA chapter's
tech counselor, who came out for mid-build inspections. When he later acted
as the DAR for my airworthiness inspection, it was a lot easier. When I offered
him my builder's log and the photos of the build, he just smiled. Since he
had seen the plane twice before and tracked my progress through our monthly chapter
meetings, he knew I built it, and didn't need the proof.
