My bench is very similar to Dave bench. I made mine of 4x2 box section and
mounted 4 trailer jockey wheels at each corner. To move it you wind them up
and then re-level with the adjustable feet.

Hi,
Built mine using the the engineered beams found on the 801 site, (sorry
don't have the name to give credit). Search this group for work bench should
be able to find it. Used the best wheels from home depot about 12 bucks, two
of the four wheels have brakes. It rolls well, I was worried the wheels
would not be good enough their ratings was 275 pounds.
Pictures.

I saw one person on this thread painting the workbench, Any opinions? Good
idea? What paint would be best. I used MDF for a top.
Good luck.

Let us know:
What the current requirement is for your light(s) If there is more than
one
light how many
How long the run will be from your landing light switch
Will that wire be part of a larger bundle ( doubtful )
Landing lights can draw a lot of current. They are typically on for
over
five minutes at a stretch. If they are too small they can easily
overheat
especially if you get a long final.
For systems where the battery is on the firewall and the lights are
mounted
in the cowl a relay between the battery and the light could be an
option.
In systems where the battery is behind the seats the lights could be
powered
directly from the main buss.

Subject: | Re: Workbench - 10' & Wheels ?? |
Hello Matt in Katy:
I like to put everything to the test so I asked all the people I could find to
get on my new table and jump up and down. It held up well:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/5_25_03_WorkTableTest.jpg
I don't recommend using Pneumatic tires. They don't roll well when the air gets
low. On the other hand you can let air out and add air to level the table.
Make sure all of the wheels swivel so you can steer the table in all directions
to avoid airplane parts and automobiles.
If you are still working on the tail, don't make it 10' right now. I used an old
dining table to make the tail. When I finally got around to making a table,
it went from 8':
to 12':
then to it's current configuration of 6':
(http://www.cooknwithgas.com/11_2006_Table.JPG) during the span of the project. MDF is easily reconfigured and you can always use the removed pieces for forming blocks.
Soon it will be reduced even further. I've found that any and all horizontal surfaces
in my garage become junk collectors.
Have fun,

I used MDF for my top also. Just painted with a couple coats of semi
gloss latex I found in one of my trucks. I don't think it matters what
you use. You don't even have to paint. It makes it easier to lay out
lines if you want and also to find little things you might have dropped
on it.

MessageNow, there you go asking me all those technical questions. I
don't know where the battery goes yet. Haven't got that far. I might put
the lights on the struts up by the wing and run the wires either through
the wing or inside the strut fairing. Maybe have one on each side. I
just wanted to know what size wire would be to small so that I can fish
them easier when I decide where to put the lights.

Matt . . . you might want to consider putting a cross brace (2" x 4")
connecting the end legs and about 3" off the floor. Then get two
mover's dollies from Harbor Freight for about $16 each. Put each cross
brace on a movers dolly. Robert Schoenberger 701

Actually, my table top is 4X12. 14 ft long would be nice, but I don't have
the room. I like your idea about the trailer jacks. I might have to do that
if I need to move it. It takes 4 people to do that with the top on and all
the steel in it. That way it could be moved without unloading all the stuff
on it first.

This is a true tragedy for Jim's family and friends, and also for the Zenith community.
He was a really enthusiastic promoter of the 601XL and of SLSA aircraft
in general. This beautiful 601XL was the first one certified as a SLSA. Jim
had put it up for sale in September. He was a great guy and will be missed by
many.
Hopefully, we will learn the cause of the crash in a timely manner. Please note

Try again:
Guys,
I'm working with the ladies at Kennon Aircraft Covers, Sheridan, WY., http://kennoncovers.com/
They are willing to develop and build fuse, tail, and wing covers for folks like
me that are hangar-less.
We are at "please mark this template" stage and as my 701 still looks like an
erector set, for you folks over 45 years young, I need a volunteer with an assembled
701 to mark up the template and get it back to Kennon.
Any takers? Contact me off line and I'll get the template to you.
Many thanks,

property i will buy in the sticks. guess i should
check with the neighbors (if any) before i start.
always been my dream to have a place "in the country"
that i could visit and taxi up to my own hanger and
walk to my abode.

John . . . I am a land developer and own a 701 in progress. The first
place to start is to go to the Town(ship) where you're interested in
locating and ask the code enforcement officer in the building dept (or
the head of the building dept.) if private air strips are permitted.
Avoid the word "airport" - it sounds massive and noisy. I generally
buy a copy of the code and verify his answer osk for copies of the pages
which apply. Some towns if you go out far enough from metro areas don't
even have building codes, and then you should be golden, but
verification is still necessary.
When selecting a piece of land if possible have it so the runway and the
next 1000 ft. beyond (even if on the neighbor's land) isn't aligned with
anyone's home, tall trees, high hills - anything that can kill you if
you have an engine out on take off. If you can avoid flying over the
neighbors on takeoff and landing, that is a big plus. Low flying planes
over one's home make people nervous, especially if they aren't from the
aviation community. If you want to discuss anything else, you can write
me privately at hrs1@frontiernet.net. Good luck. Robert Schoenberger 701

I would suggest that you make a bottom shelf for the table, it comes in
quite handy and gives you extra storage space.

the four wheels have brakes. It rolls well, I was worried the wheels would not
be good enough their ratings was 275 pounds.

He was a really enthusiastic promoter of the 601XL and of SLSA aircraft
in general. This beautiful 601XL was the first one certified as a SLSA. Jim
had put it up for sale in September. He was a great guy and will be missed by

That is what I did on my property in NY. There was another private one a few
miles away, so I didn't ask and just put it in. One suggestion is if have
the property make the runway as long as possible especially if you have
obstructions. You also might want to change airplanes or have some friends come
over, just gives you more options.

Consider the density altitude at which you will be operating from such a short
strip before proceeding. It doesn't sound like you are leaving much room for trouble.

Hi John,
One thing to do, as Robert has mentioned, is to check with the County. I
live outside any city limits, so I follow the County rules. I was able
to download them from the Colorado Counties web sites, and looked at
their "land proposals/usage" section. Also, I have contacted the (2)
neighbors close to me, 1/4 mile and farther, and have mentioned to them
that I will perfrom my flights, No Earlier Than, 6:00am and No Later
Than, 9:00pm. If I anticipate anytime outside of these hours, I will
call them and give them a "heads up" and forwarn them in advance.
Also, offering "free rides" should also be a plus to get the neighbors
favor!!
Good luck,
Keith

Subject: | LANDING LIGHT WIRE |
Ok ... for a 100W sealed beam bulb ( the norm ) the current required to
light it is under 8 amps.
Now for the fun part
For one lamp with a run of 7' - 10' 16 ga
For two lamps on the same wire 12 ga wire.
For one lamp with a run of 12' - 15' 14 ga
For two lamps on the same wire 10 ga
These calculations were gleaned from AC43 for continuous flow at 20C
using
tin plated MIL-W-27759 conductor
I think you can see why the length of the run is important as is the
current
draw of the lamps themselves.
I think I would install the 10 ga wire for a couple of reasons. 1. It
won't
add that much weight to your plane. and 2. It will carry just about any
load you may want to put on it.
Problems arise when you put too much demand on a wire and the wire gets
all
hot and bothered about the extra work.
Hope this helps.

Now, there you go asking me all those technical questions. I don't know
where the battery goes yet. Haven't got that far. I might put the lights
on
the struts up by the wing and run the wires either through the wing or
inside the strut fairing. Maybe have one on each side. I just wanted to
know
what size wire would be to small so that I can fish them easier when I
decide where to put the lights.

Right on!

I need to know what wire size to use for landing lights. I realize it
depends on voltage and watts and electrical stuff like that. Would 16AWG

enough or does it need to be heavier?

electrical stuff. Turn the switch on, the light goes on. Turn the switch

Subject: RE: Zenith-List: LANDING LIGHT WIRE
Ok ... for a 100W sealed beam bulb ( the norm ) the current required
to light it is under 8 amps.
Now for the fun part
For one lamp with a run of 7' - 10' 16 ga
For two lamps on the same wire 12 ga wire.
For one lamp with a run of 12' - 15' 14 ga
For two lamps on the same wire 10 ga
These calculations were gleaned from AC43 for continuous flow at 20C
using tin plated MIL-W-27759 conductor
I think you can see why the length of the run is important as is the
current draw of the lamps themselves.
I think I would install the 10 ga wire for a couple of reasons. 1. It
won't add that much weight to your plane. and 2. It will carry just
about any load you may want to put on it.
Problems arise when you put too much demand on a wire and the wire
gets all hot and bothered about the extra work.
Hope this helps.

Now, there you go asking me all those technical questions. I don't
know where the battery goes yet. Haven't got that far. I might put the
lights on the struts up by the wing and run the wires either through the
wing or inside the strut fairing. Maybe have one on each side. I just
wanted to know what size wire would be to small so that I can fish them
easier when I decide where to put the lights.

Right on!
Let us know:
What the current requirement is for your light(s) If there is
more than one light how many
How long the run will be from your landing light switch
Will that wire be part of a larger bundle ( doubtful )
Landing lights can draw a lot of current. They are typically on
for over five minutes at a stretch. If they are too small they can
easily overheat especially if you get a long final.
For systems where the battery is on the firewall and the lights
are mounted in the cowl a relay between the battery and the light could
be an option.
In systems where the battery is behind the seats the lights could
be powered directly from the main buss.

I need to know what wire size to use for landing lights. I
realize it depends on voltage and watts and electrical stuff like that.
Would 16AWG be enough or does it need to be heavier?

Subject: | 701 amphibous floats |
Hello,
I'm a new builder in Michigan and am just starting a 701. I've looked at the
701 for a number of years but was always on the edge of starting the project.
I have a 1800' grass strip that I plan to fly from. Living in Michigan
though provides a large amount of lakes and I had thought of amphibs as well.
I
had the opportunity to look at Mike Elrods 701 here in Michigan and it is on
full amphibs. By the way - Mike has a beautiful 701 and his cockpit layout and
uncluttered appearance is fantastic. It must come from driving all that big
iron around the sky. Which brings me to a question. I don't think full
amphibs would fate to well on a slightly bumpy grass strip, would Zeniths
tri-amphibs stand up to a little more abuse? They would probably be used only
three
months out of the year before the wheels go back on. Does Zenith still sell
these as kits and or plans?
Thanks for the input,
Ben

My points were that using "Do Not Archive" keeps the archives from
filling up with the exact same comments over & over & over. If you wish
to prove my point go to the archives & enter the word "test" and see for
yourselves the amount of worthless duplicated posts that have been
posted there. Trimming posts also reduces the amount of those posts that
should be archived.

Another lister had declined to take time to help you because of the way you
teed off on somebody a while back to the effect of "mind your own damn business"
or something similar.
I had just replied to his email and asked that he reconsider because we are on
this list to help one another when your email tongue lashing hit the server. That

you ask. Where's all that anger coming from? Is it Touret's Syndrome?

Listers,
As many of you now know (you couldn't POSSIBLY have missed it) the First Annual
Cuss Pot Fund Drive is off and running.
Patterned somewhat after many other fund drives in that "Donations" are being accepted,
this one differs only in that it offers prizes in return for contributions......more

Czech aircraft were building them for Zenith. Maybe someone else will know

Subject: | Workbench - 10' & Wheels ?? |
Matt,
I built a 12'x4' work table using 3 12' long 2"x10" wood beams, braced them,
and put it on strong wheels. Problem is my floor is not all that flat and I
had to spend a few hours shimming up the table whenever I moved it. Also
noticed that the beams were not rigid enough and the table did not stay all
that flat. The middle sagged about 1/8" and I had to add legs in the middle
of the table.
As to making the table smaller, My 701 wings could probably been made on a
10'x3' table as long as you don't skimp on the 2"x2" metal beams used to
support the work.
Regards,
Les

various magazines over the past years I have seen articles about building your

Someone once told me the way to put a hole in Plexiglas is with a hot

Try it on a small piece of scrap.

Well believe it or not this is the time of year that I start planning
the BBQ for Sun-N-Fun. It takes me awhile to tie up all the loose ends
so that I have as little as possible to do during the show. As most of
you know I started this event as a builder just wanting to share a good
evening with other builders, but it has become somewhat of a monster
from day one, with the first year having over 80 people in attendance. I
don=92t mind at all either, I cover all costs for the BBQ and put out a
donation jar, so far I have broken even with donations from each of you
and from Jabiru USA, homebuilthelp.com and of course Jim at
sportplanes.com ( my heartfelt condolences goes out to his family) also
kicking in is Flightcrafters. However, I do not accept a donation from
Zenith or any of the Heintz family I=92m just happy that they have
chosen
to attend every year since this event is not affiliated with the
company,. Well it was never supposed to be, but as Can-Zac now I can
hardly say there is not company involvement. The first year we have dogs
and burgers with many people bringing dessert and salads ( don=92t
forget
the strawberries), last year we had dogs and burgers with chicken wings
and roasted corn. The pop went too fast and 250 plates disappeared real
fast. Flightcrafters brought a massive cake and the strawberries were
there again. But what I need from you folks are idea=92s on what was
good
and what was bad? Do you want to see more of something? I tossed up the
idea of a pig roast, but that is a hell of a lot of work for a Canadian
to pull off. So I=92m open for suggestions. I would also like the chance
to firm up some salads and desserts this year so that everyone has a
full belly.
Just a final word, all this is possible with the Generous help From Rick
Roberts and his crew. Though Rick now lives in Georgia his crew are
still in Florida and are willing to help out with the BBQ,s and all the
cooking, which for two guys not in the aviation world is beyond gracious
and I can never say Thanks enough to those gents. The campsite will
remain the same as last year and is held for us by Jim Hoak. Remember
folks this is for you folks to meet other people of like interests, lets
see how big we can make it in April 19 2007

One idea no one has post:
Why not look for a airstrip already developed with hangar -houses around... They
can be found in almost all prices, I visited some in Texas that had grass
strips and were not (very) expensive. Some on the other side, with concrete strips
and remote electric entrance gate for the cars an lots of luxury...
Just a comment, hope it helps.

One thing to do, as Robert has mentioned, is to check with the County. I live
outside any city limits, so I follow the County rules. I was able to download
them from the Colorado Counties web sites, and looked at their "land proposals/usage"
section. Also, I have contacted the (2) neighbors close to me, 1/4 mile
and farther, and have mentioned to them that I will perfrom my flights, No Earlier
Than, 6:00am and No Later Than, 9:00pm. If I anticipate anytime outside
of these hours, I will call them and give them a "heads up" and forwarn them
in advance.
Also, offering "free rides" should also be a plus to get the neighbors favor!!
Good luck,

John . . . I am a land developer and own a 701 in progress. The first place to
start is to go to the Town(ship) where you're interested in locating and ask
the code enforcement officer in the building dept (or the head of the building
dept.) if private air strips are permitted. Avoid the word "airport" - it
sounds massive and noisy. I generally buy a copy of the code and verify his
answer osk for copies of the pages which apply. Some towns if you go out far
enough from metro areas don't even have building codes, and then you should be
golden, but verification is still necessary.
When selecting a piece of land if possible have it so the runway and the next
1000 ft. beyond (even if on the neighbor's land) isn't aligned with anyone's home,
tall trees, high hills - anything that can kill you if you have an engine
out on take off. If you can avoid flying over the neighbors on takeoff and landing,
that is a big plus. Low flying planes over one's home make people nervous,
especially if they aren't from the aviation community. If you want to discuss
anything else, you can write me privately at hrs1@frontiernet.net. Good
luck. Robert Schoenberger 701

and three readings from the planning board and three readings from the commision.
On the very last hearing there was five items on the agenda, mine was
last. So I sat there and when the first four were processed there was still
six people left in the audiance,,,,, I thought to myself. oh geez a bunch of "not
on my backyard" people.... Believe it or not all six were in favor of it cause
they were all pilots and I had requested the FAA to chart it for someone
to use in case of an emergency.. Denver FAA wanted to know what I was going to
call it so of course I replied " Haas International"... It is in most databases
using the identifier 2WY3. The good news is
it is 3000' long,,, the bad news is it is located at 7960 MSL. Which really isn't
bad for my fire breathing 801. <G>

Subject: | Workbench - 10' & Wheels ?? |
Matt,
I am building my workbench frame out of 1.5" square steel tube. I plan
to use some all-thread in each leg to create jackstands. The jackstands
will lift the wheels off of the ground and will allow me to level the
table no matter how uneven the floor. At the suggestion of Jay in
Dallas, I am going to build the table low and provide enough range in
the jackstands to bring it up to a normal height. It will allow me to
run it high for wings and keep it low for working on the fuselage when
it is in the "Boat" stage. I will post pictures in my gallery as it
comes together.

Subject: Zenith-List: Workbench - 10' & Wheels ??
I have searched the archives and could not find an answer to my question
so
I thought that I would ask the folks that know.
I am building my workbench and would like to put it on wheels so that I
can
easily move it out of the way when not in use. But I am not sure how
easy
it will be to keep it true.
I am also hoping to get away with only building a 10 foot bench, that
space
problem again.
Has anyone had any luck with either one?
By the way how was the WW College?
Thanks,
Matt in Katy
