anything. All I can say, this is a superior instruction video, and
anyone contemplating building a 701 should absolutely have this
important aid. I wish I had had it at the start as it would have saved
many hours (20 or 30 at least) of construction time and frustration with
interpreting the plans. The section about what not to rivet because of
future mating of the forward section was particularly helpful. Buy it -

I modified a pair of long range tanks from ZAC. Gave me a chance to look
inside. The vent tube is not attached at the top at all. It is beveled on the
top end and is positioned with the end about a 1/4 inch from the top outboard
corner of the tank. My modified tanks did not work out real well so I made a
new set with carbon fiber. I am attaching a photo of one of my new tanks during
construction. You can kind of see the vent tube location. The CF tanks have
tested well but aren't flying yet.

Does anyone know of a device that would desensitize the XL elevator motion around
neutral, akin to the exponential function on radio control transmitters? Flying
in the Zenith demo, it seemed that for gradual-to-moderate turns much more
stick deflection was needed for ailerons than elevator while holding altitude
in the turn, and slight stick adjustments made for big pitch changes.
For those who fly XLs and other light planes, is this a big deal, and would there
be a benefit in smoother flying with an elevator that had less deflection relative
to the control stick around neutral, then catching up for full surface
deflection at full stick?
Thanks for your inputs

Wade,
For the wing tanks, any high point in the tank will do. I put the vent
ends below the bottom wing surface by an inch. For the header tank, I
vented next to the incoming line near the top of the tank and routed a
tube to the right wing a few feet out and curved the tip hanging below
directly into the air stream to prevent siphoning and keep the fumes
from being close to the exhaust on the left side.

It is a lot less noticeable in the dual stick version. This is probably because
of the stick position rather than any real change.

There is a new crop of digital camcorders that shoot 30 progressive frames per
second instead of (or in addition to) 60 interlace fields per sec (that are separated
in time by 1/60th sec). I have been considering the Canon Elura. I have
had experience with the small NTSC color cameras (interlaced) that are easy
to put out on a wing tip.. but I don't know how a remote camera could be inexpensively
done with progressive scan, without putting the whole camcorder outside
the cockpit somehow. There may be a creative solution for a small remote
progressive camera. This probably doesn't help you too much..

Listers,
I'm wanting to buy some labels for my panel and thought someone could point me
to the right place. Here's what I think I want:
White print on a clear stick-on label. I prefer that it not be a water-based ink
for durability.
Is there anyone out there who produces such a product?
Thanks,

On the Flight Design CTSW 2006 they have springs attached to the yoke to make it
less sensitive and feel more like a Cessna or larger plane... Night and day
difference from the 2005 CTSW. It works great for that model... Not sure what
people think for the Zodiac

I recently had to select a video camera and bought a digital still camera.
Depending on the resolution and frame rate a Canon SD800 with a 4 gigabyte
SDHC type memory card will shoot 30-172 minutes of video. At 640 by 480
pixels and 30 frames per second you can get 30 minutes and the clarity is
outstanding. My tests indicate that a charged battery will last well over a
hour while shooting a movie.

The elevator input is sensitive relative to the ailerons, which are "
heavy", at least on my XL. This is no big deal, in my opinion. The
elevator sensitivity is easy to get used to. I have dual sticks, which
may provide a little less elevator travel than the Y stick per measured
deflection of input, but I am not sure. I would have to go to the dwgs
and check the geometry.
I first flew it on its maiden flight with no control difficulty or
concerns. Anyone who can fly a Cessna or Piper type trainer should have
no trouble with flying the XL. My XL is really a fun to fly airplane.

have enough clarity in single frames, but I understand the digital ones
are much better that way.....
Also want to use it for tuft-testing, and that means being able to
hook up to a remote camera. It seems that most of the lower end DV
cameras don't have such an input. Does anyone know of one that is
capable in this regard??
There are still some questions posed on the list regarding Slats v/s
VGs that I need to answer, but I'll leave all that until after all the
distractions of this holiday season......
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas,
and fair skies and tailwinds always.....

Subject: | corvair motor mount |
William Wynn's manual shows the motor mount as being built with the spools
as shown in the first drawing. I understand that Zenair now furnishes the
kits with longeron mounts to accommodate this type of motor mount.
However the older kits had the motor mount bolts welded to the brackets that
bolted to the longerons. This would require a mount with tabs as shown in
the next two illustrations.
The spool mounted engine mount places the welds in shear while the tab
mounted mount places the weld in tension, unless a member is folded over
parallel to the diagonal tube as shown in the middle drawing.
Question: is the tab mounted motor mount as durable and structurally sound
as the spool mounted?

They look like standard nut plates installed with solid rivets. They are
available thought ACS and I'd tell you the page but I don't have my catalog

Also speaking of nut plates has anyone ever seen these?

I have a set like the one you are suggesting. It works well tied into a
video monitor or TV but I'm having trouble trying to find a Video camera
that will interface with it. I'd like to be able to use the video camera to
record flights. I have a small JVC video camera but can find the appropriate
cables to tie in the R/C receiver. Any suggestions?

Russell,
The tab-mounted mounts are as sound and durable if they're properly
welded. The spool type is perhaps stronger because
the weld is more in shear than tension to a minor degree. I don't know
that I've ever heard of a mount breaking because of the difference.

At least on the 601XL Zenith has always offered long and short mounting
bolts. The short bolts worked with motor mounts with flat plates while the
long bolts work with mounts with spools. You can see this in the latest
plans by comparing the Jabiru mount on 6-JE-1 with the dynafocal mount show
in 6-YE-2. This same choice is shown in my circa 2000 plans.

Regarding PAL - Youtube doesn't use standard full resolution video. I haven't
uploaded anything to them but I suspect if you can save your video as a Quicktime,
mpeg or similar format that you'd be OK. Check what the site says about
video requirements.

Subject: | Building flaperons |
Greetings all,
Started building flaperons and thought I would pass along this building
tip. Directions say before drilling the hinge angles to the spar to
place the spar with temporarily clamped hinge angles up to wing to make
sure the distance is correct between mounts. Directions for permanent
mounting indicate the use of a 1/4 in AN washer on each side of the
hinge angle. These washers are .060 thick. I clamped a piece of
material .120 in thickness to the inside of one of the flaperon mounts
to account for the thickness of the two washers. With out accommodating
for the thickness of the washers tightening the bolt would displace the
mounting arms the thickness of the two washers. Probably wouldn't
amount to much movement but the more stress kept off from these mounting
points the better.
Also like to wish all on the list a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Tommy, what I did was I went to a local company that made vinyl signs. They
use a computer to make letters and numbers that have sticky adhesives on the
back. They can make any kind of color background, lettering and size. I used
them for everything, warnings, tail numbers and all panel words. Fast and cheep.
Maybe you could find such a company near you. Also, they were thrilled to know
they were making the letters for a homemade plane. FWIW, Best regards, Bill

I put a bunch of P-touch labels on my Challenger II about a year ago & won't
make the same mistake again with my 701.
The label near the fuel filler cap is unreadable because P-touch labels
don't take well to solvents like fuel. My panel labels have discolored and
blurred somewhat and are starting to come loose.
Wish I could find a good source for inexpensive etched aluminum labels.

Subject: | Aileron end rod washers |
Christmas greetings from Down Under,
I am connecting my XL Ailerons and have come up with some Q's. On XL plans 6-W-10,
where the rod end connects to the belcrank with bolt AN5-10A, it does not
show any washers? but the other end Rod end at the aileron side does show 2
washers.?? Should there be washers at the belcrank end?
Also the bolt AN3-12A that goes through the belcrank bushing also does not show
any washer? My Airframe training says to use washers ad no washers go against
this.. IS it just assumed that you would put washers on them without writing
it on the plans? page 8 of the construction manual does state minimum one washer
under nut after bolt grip length... and thats why its not mentioned on the
plans???
So What have those that have gone before me, done??

Standard aircraft procedures should be used here. Typically, at least
one washer is used under the nut, more are used if necessary. If more
than four washers are needed to get proper grip length, the next
shorter standard bolt should be used. The plans probably show two
washers on the aileron end to highlight the fact that more than one
is needed there. If the plans don't show washers, usually only one is
needed.
