Subject: | Re: Aileron end rod washers |
Hi Chris,
I'm afraid the plans are not so good as to include washers when they
are needed. Indeed, there are lots worse problems than that in the
details presented in the plans.
My own approach is to include up to two washers on each bolt when
needed for proper thread position of the nut. I prefer one washer
and sometimes use a shorter bolt than the specified one to get this result.
My take on the whole process and plans is that each builder must make
his own decisions on length bolts to use and how many washers to
use. With many hand made parts and many years from the original
design to the actual builder's efforts there are many cases where
judgement must override small issues like this one.
Best regards,
Paul

Tommy
I made a drawing of the labels we required in turbo cad &
printed them out on A4 gloss photo paper to the size required.
Most were printed back with white letters to avoid
reflections in canopy.
Ray took the photos to a local vinyl sign maker who scanned
them & printed them out with a sticky backing, we cut them out removed
back & stuck them on the panel have been on 6 months so far ok.

Tommy, what I did was I went to a local company that made vinyl signs.
They use a computer to make letters and numbers that have sticky
adhesives on the back. They can make any kind of color background,
lettering and size. I used them for everything, warnings, tail numbers
and all panel words. Fast and cheep. Maybe you could find such a company
near you. Also, they were thrilled to know they were making the letters
for a homemade plane. FWIW, Best regards, Bill of Georgia

Have you tried the clear laser printer labels? I did up my whole
panel with those and people always ask me what I did them with.
The only thing better in my opinion would be a silk screen job (which
anyone can do at home with a little time and inexpensive paints and
tools)

Subject: | Nav antenna location? |
I am building a 601XL taildragger and have been mulling over where to
put the still-hypothetical NAV antenna. You know, the two-rods-in-a-V
thing. Since the 601 doesn't have a fixed vertical fin, I am thinking
that atop the rudder, while possible, may not be such a good idea.
Maybe on the bottom of the fuselage just forward or aft of the access
door? I am worried that such a position will lend itself to continuous
damage from flying pebbles in the propwash, etc. Any other ideas or
proffered existing solutions?
Thanks,

I've got mine on top of the rudder and it works just fine.

These were made with a ~$120 P-Touch labeller, and the included software on a PC,

Mark,
What is the date for the Zenith Bar-B-Que at SunNFun this year? It looks like
I am going to be able to go this time, but I won't get there until late Thursday
afternoon. Also, anything else of interest going to happen, like maybe Jon
Croke flying iteration number 3 of his 701 down to Florida? (note to humor challenged,
this is an attempt at being funny).
Since others might be interested, I asked this on the Matronics list instead of
a private message to Mark.
Thanks,
Tommy Walker in Alabama

Re washers: the most important thing is that you should use a penny washer
under the nut so that should the ball come out of the rod end the rod cannot
detach from the horn. Would not be nice if it did!

Tommy and all Mark Your Calendars for Thursday April 19th, this is the
date for the 3rd Annual Webmasters BBQ. Jon, Rick, David and I will once
again reach deep into our pockets and buy all of you dinner!! Held at
the same spot as last year, as long as Jim Hoak can get his camper into
position. I have learned a few things form last year and expect a bigger
turn out this coming Sun-N-Fun. Once again, we will have nametags and
the sign up sheet will appear on our websites in late January. This is
so I have a far better idea on how much food to buy and from requests
made by you for the return of the tags. Last year saw over 100 Zenith
builders/owners and interested people show up. I hope to see more this
year.
As for Jon "Crash" Croke, what can I say he is going like a mad man
filming every step of his build for the benefit of all those who will
follow in his steps. But I don't hold hope for the prospect of seeing
Jon's Tri-701 at Sun-N-Fun. But I am hoping to see it at Oshkosh!!!!

Just thinking that Santa must be one hotshot STOL flyer!
Landing on all those little roofs, at odd angles....
And with such a heavy load on board.....
The aerodynamics of that sleigh are impressive....
And the t/o thrust of those reindeer - I'm envious....
And all those TV antennas and powerlines....
In the dark, with all those glaring lights....
So give him a break and at least set up a windsock....

Not a problem. He has slats with VG's, but cannot call it a 701 anymore
.uses green scotchbrite pads on the bottom of his skis, for traction
..has a fifth bearing on his WW Conversion with a rear starter, swinging a
five bladed prop of questionable efficiency
..labels his panel with a label maker, but used crinkle paint, so the labels
keep falling off
..has two nav antennas, one on the rudder and one underneath, just in case
..put both the landing light and the aileron trim on the right wing, 'cause
he's a big guy
..has a glass panel backed up by steam gauges, because his dynamo keeps over
charging and he used a master switch that doesn't enable him to cut off the
alternator
..has polished aluminum that doesn't shine too well because he didn't use
Nuvite's 'C'
.he can't be seen too well because of the polished aluminum (that's OK, he
needs to be stealth), but he has strobes and a flashing beacon even though
he's a Sport Pilot, plus he has the landing light that he can turn on
whenever he wants to be seen, or to light up the rooftops, but one light is
burned out because he didn't think to turn the glowy thing vertical.
One last thing, he's on his 3rd 701, but it's OK, he knows a guy who's
really good at rebuilding 701's!
