Hello Listers: As a long-time lurker on this list I am very grateful for the information an d experience I have received from all of you. What makes me most grateful i s the coming together of people from very divergent backgrounds towards a co mmon interest...and the fact (demonstrated in the thread below) that we can LAUGH and smile not only at Christmastime but year-round as well. Sure, som etimes things get heated, some leave, new faces appear, the circle starts an ew..... My deep appreciation goes out to all the long-time posters who pepper this l ist with information, wisdom, and laughter. Happy Holidays Everyone! Okay, guys.....on some parts of this planet people are about to celebrate Christmas. We do that at my place. Possibly it isn't politically correct to wish a Merry Christmas to strangers. I've enjoyed 2006 on this List. It has been fun, informative, diverse, and a lot of other things. In the end, I think I'll renew my membership because you builders just aren't strangers anymore; you're more like neighbors or old school chums......extended family. Here's wishing all participants a Merry Christmas, or whatever you may celebrate, and a better 2007. Thanks to Matt Dralle for the List. Thanks to 3M for pads. Thanks to Chris Heintz for his good work. And if you hurry, E-Bay has Gift Certificates. Hope none are stranded in Denver (although that pimple will clear up in a few days). Again, thanks to all for making 2006 a pleasant journey, and, Merry Christmas!! Zed/do not archive

Zed, To your well worded Merry Christmas wish and Thanks, I would like to add a special "Thanks" to Chris Smith for that very poignant post about his recent flight. Of ALL the quality posts this year, I would vote that one to be the BEST. Can you imagine including that letter with every set of plans that ZAC sent out? I wonder if the rate of completion would increase. As someone else pointed out, that post should definitely be archived, and regurgitated frequently. Though many may deny shedding a tear, I would be willing to bet that there are as many liars. Actually, I believe it is Politically Correct to wish someone a Merry Christmas regardless of their religion... If they aren't Christian, they should just know that I'm wishing them well and that the Christmas part doesn't apply to them.... just like if you wished me a Happy Hanukkah, I wouldn't get offended... I would just know that you are wishing me well and that particular holiday doesn't apply to me, etc... As a society, we have tried to become more tolerant of others which is good... we just don't need to remove what is an intergral part of some of us in order to prove we are understanding of others... Just my thoughts on the matter... Merry Christmas! Zed Smith <zsmith3rd@earthlink.net> wrote: Okay, guys.....on some parts of this planet people are about to celebrate Christmas. Hello, fellow listers Just out of curiosity, I went to the list archives and searched my first posting. It was back in July, 1997. Through it, I bought a set of plans, second hand. The gentleman that sold them to me went to build an RV. Before my first post, I read the whole archive - yes, those days, it was feasible. And it was before Matt came up with the don't archive thingy. Over the past 9.5 years, I posted some 400 times, and my name was involved in some 860 emails (that I know of...!). I discussed building sequence, rivets, bending brakes, tools, lights, LEDs, strobes, illness, round vs triangular holes, the color of rivets, fly-ins, riveted fuel tanks, and a hole lot more. I was (arguably) the first one to realize I had used the wrong color of scotch-brite, after somebody raised the (green) flag. But let's not beat that dead horse (again). It's been 9.5 years, I am still assembling wings. It has been fun - trading information, stories and opinions. This list is just like a bunch of friends that I can tap on the shoulder and ask just about anything, from "where do I get a bright blue do-hickey?" to a plain "why?". And, of course, that's what you get as a reply: sometimes an expert bit of information, sometimes a shrug, sometimes an opinion. And it's all fine and dandy. I wouldn't have it any other way. And, controversial as it may be, now we even have pictures - to the delight of many and chagrin of some. Better than magazines, which you can read in one afternoon, and you can't interact with. It's been fun, people! I have enjoyed your company, and hope you all will be around for a long while. At the very least, until my fist flight... ;-) Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. May the rivet lines be straight, the drill bit sharp, and, when you finish, no "spare" parts are left in the crate/shelf/drawer/bedroom... Carlos CH601-HD, plans Building since 1997

List, I am not a builder yet. BUT, I have made several electronic gadgets and wanted a professional looking faceplate. I experimented with a variety of different things and ended up with silk screening. I went to the local art supply store and purchased a T-shirt silk screen kit. I experimented with a variety of paints and found that thinned plastic model enamel works great. I tried to match the viscosity of the paint that came with the kit. I had to purchase more screen material during my experimentation. With about three tries I was able to draw a placard on the computer and transfer it to the screen material (per included instructions). I then took a piece of metal I sprayed black with an enamel shaker spray can and silk screened the white letters onto it. I think I spent two weekend days and invested about $30.00 for the kit and wasted materials until I came up with an acceptable result. The switchbox I made has been used and abused in my home entertainment center for about two years and none of the letters have shown any fading or scratching. I made a switchbox for a friend's boat and sprayed flat clear over it. It too still looks great. I found several kits available with a quick internet search. Perhaps one of the paint guys might have a better suggestion for the type of paint. With a small amount of experimentation and time any of you can make very professional looking placards for your projects. Dave Thompson dave.thompson@verizon.net Westminster, CA 601XL rudder workshop, Corvair engine in parts and asking Santa for some plans. P.S. Before I sent this e-mail, I changed the font to Courier, 12 points. That way it will display properly on the list. Notice that I don't have any of the weird characters in the text above?

Robert, I do not intend removing my slats as my wing profile is different. My slats are cut from the airfoil and move forward 4 inches when they open at 10-12' A of A, When they retract they fit perfectly to the leading edge of the wing. Removing them would leave a very sharp leading edge and a stall with unknown caracteristics. A friend that has the original ZAC wings is seriously considering removing the slats. If he does, I am sure he will share the results with the list. My interest was only in getting a second opinion to confirm the Australian findings. At least two members of the list from N.A have encouraging results.I tip my hat to the gent(s) that first tried removing the slats as I would have expected some serious negative results. Most of my experience with the 701 is on floats. Slats are of little use on a float plane until you get airborn because you cannot attain sufficient A of A while on the water for the slats to generate lift. The heel of the floats dig-in and reduce or stop acceleration if I rotate above 10-12' A off A. The exception in when in the plow before getting on the step where they probably generate some lift and help get on the step. The best lift devices during T.O. from water are the flaps. I just about always use 30'. The exception is strong variable winds. Where I find the slats improve handling is in tight turns when going into or out off small lakes surrounded by high hills. I reduce flaps to 20' as soon as it is safe to do so after T.O., and increase A of A to 20'. With 1000# gross I can safely turn at 40 kts inside a 300 foot circle. I practice these turns at altitude on many of my flights, they improve handling and are real confidence builder for getting out of tight spots. For normal flying, I lift-off at 35 kts and I immediately start to retract flaps and accelerate to 50 kts in surface effect. I then raise the nose to maintain 50 kts in the climb and reduce power to 5200-5300. At 1000-1100 gross the slats are at least half in and the A of A is 8-10'. That is one area when I would like to have a manual override to lock the slats in as they are not required for lift and are producing a bit of drag. Another area that an override would be nice is when flying at reduced speed in rough air. In the auto mode they cycle needlessly. It's an easy mod but I just never gave it the priority to get it done. Now for the question: Slats or no slats with VGs. Clearly, if you can get the same slow speed handling without the slats and get increased cruise speed to boot, I would choose the no slats with VGs. You save weight and complexity, and get increased cruise speed or reduced fuel consumption. If you don't care about slow speed handling then the decision is even easier. For those who are not interested in experimenting the decision is easy also. Those are the recommendations I will make to my friends. Hibernating for the winter, Carl 701/912 Do not archive
