Is there anyone who did not like the MC-5 cylinders that came with the kit and went with something else? If so, I would be interested in any MC-5 and/or MC-4 brake cylinders that you want to get out of your garage. Anyone found a great deal on these anywhere? Also, looking for landing gear parts, wheels, tires, or just about anything that came with the kit that you did not like and went a separate way. Let me know what you have and what you want for it. Thanks, Larry Husky Lakeview, Oregon Almost ready to sit inside of fuse! (No engine noises. I SWEAR!) Do Not Archive

I also got a copy of FlightSim X. The XL plane from the Zenith site will work with the new version, but I only have one instrument on the panel. Also, when you are flying and your looking at your plane from outside, the canopy is solid black and you can not look inside. I have not had time to do any research to see if there is a fix for this available or if there is going to be. I do like the new simulator better though. Hope someone is able to fix the Zenith planes to fly in the new version. Larry Husky Lakeview, Oregon Do Not Archive

All: Yes, the Nuvite process works. Like anything else in the building game, it's a trade-off. Material costs, even if you get all the Nuvite recommended accessories is 20% of what it'll cost you to paint. Time-wise, it's about the same, but God is it boring!! I'm forcing myself to go out and finish the c-section now- hopefully, I'll be able to post pictures of what I consider to be the final results by the end of the day. Notes: 1. Zenith builders are dealing with non-clad material. There are three pages in the "Book" that deal with it- concentrate on them. E-mail me and I'll attach the "Book" if you don't have it. 2. You can't get F9 through ACS- go to the Nuvite website. For non-clad material, you need F9, C, and S grades. G6 is a waste of money for our purposes. Anyone want to buy a half-pound, cheap? 3. The only usable bonnets are the backed bonnets available from Nuvite or their equivalent. Haven't found the equivalent yet. 4. Clean the gunk out from around rivets between passes. This will take as much time as the actual polishing. 5. You WILL get dirty as a coal miner. 6. Have Ma rummage through the bargain bin for flannel every time she's in the Wal-Mart fabric department. I'm getting flannel remnants for an average of $.25 a yard. 7. Good, premade flannel bonnets are available from a Canadian company for a decent price. E-mail me and I'll attach the link. Good building! Bill Naumuk HDS Fuselage Townville, Pa

If you go to Goodwill or those type of thrift stores you can usually buy sorted rags like T-shirts, flannel, denim etc. by the pound. Larry, After trying to go the cheap way with Azusa mechanical brakes with dismal results, I bought this hydraulic upgrade kit: http://www.greatplainsas.com/schbrakes.html I particularly like the master cylinders. They are much smaller than the Matco ones. I do not know if they would be a direct replacement for Matco, however. If you have rudder pedals from the factory, they may not fit. I modified my rudder pedals to fit them. I can measure them today and get back to you. This set of brakes hold full static RPM on my Corvair HDS without any problems. Hi; If you have the Deluxe version of FltSim it is possible to add instruments from other aircraft to the 601 panel. I have imported Cessna 172 instruments into my 601HDS Tail Dragger. I received a QB TD kit with the rudder nose skin made from .025 instead of .016. Anyone out there successfully built a rudder with this thickness nose skin? How did you get the skin in place and held under the rear skin to drill it? Unlike the .016, the .025 skin is *very* stiff and will not bend very much by hand. Did you have to make some special jigs? Quick reply direct also would be appreciated, if possible, as I only receive the digest. Thanks, Andy Elliott, Mesa, AZ N601GE (reserved) 601XL/TD/QB, Corvair, building...

That will work, but the better solution is cut only one end (or only one end at a time) and clean the threads by threading the correct die on from the uncut end. Remember that he who dies (pun) with the most tools wins. Hi Andy, I don't remember whether my rudder nose skin was .016 or .025, but I do remember the little jig I needed to get it in place. I used a couple of 2x4s with blocks between them to make a box. The inner dimensions of the box were the same size as the finished rear area of the nose skin. I think I just held it together with clamps (since it had no enduring value). I pushed the bent nose skin into the box so it held the rear edges at the right distance apart and drilled the rivet lines in this condition. Then it was a simple matter of reversing the position of the nose skin and rear skin so the nose skin was on the outside for riveting. Have fun, Paul XL Fuselage At 07:39 AM 12/28/2006, you wrote: >I received a QB TD kit with the rudder nose skin made from .025 >instead of .016. 12/2006 Gentlemen, Currently I have less than 30% of our customers current e-mail addresses. I am attempting to update our mailing lists to see if they have any questions re their RiteAngle IIIb Angle of Attack systems. Occasionally I get a call from someone who purchased a system several years ago and still do not have system installed or set-up due to various reasons. Should you have any questions, comments, photos of system installed in your plane, endorsements or whatever re: the RiteAngle IIIb system please send it to this address _riteangle3@aol.com_ (mailto:riteangle3@aol.com) Thankfully, since the IIIb system has gone into production, we have had no changes in the electronics, however we now have a professional written setup manual. Sincerely Elbie EM Aviation, LLC

Well, They are a little cheaper, but I have already set up my bird for the Matco ones. I have custom made pedals with my bird's N number in them. I did save the link for my building partner who is somewhat behind me in building. He may go that route. Thanks, Larry

All- I told myself that today was the last day I was going to polish the c-section. There are still parts to cut undersize and holes to drill where they don't belong- this finish work doesn't suit me. What you see is what 50 hrs of farting around will get you. According to Ron at Nuvite, I can plan on at least another pass with grade S, maybe one of C, too to get rid of shop rash. He doesn't know the kind of shop rash I have to deal with. More like a gallon of body putty and a major rebuild! I WILL start on the rear fuse before vacation is over. I think I can, I think I can..... Good building! Bill Naumuk HDS Fuselage Townville, Pa

Subject: The Secret to Prep Work Prior to Polishing with Nuvite
Bill Clapp was able to reduce the amount of time to polish by about 50% by starting with a wet sanding with 1000 grit paper, followed by another wet s anding with 1500 grit. With this method you only need to use Nuvite C and S grades. This is what we did with the 2nd half of my plane. It came out great. The first half was done with the full Nuvite treatment. Subject: Re: Stiff rudder nose skins?
I built it with the thicker skin on the nose skin, mine came that way. quick builds going to AMD usually have the thicker stuff, makes for a harder leading edge. The way I put it on is the way you put on the leading edge for the wings, use a couple of straps. . I put the edge on the insideof the rear skin instead of on top. this gave me a cleaner edge. The toughest part is making sure it is a snug fit on the top of the rudder. use a small strap tightly. it is harder than the thinner stuff and looks just as nice, just a little more calories burned doin it. Anyone out there successfully built a rudder with this thickness nose skin? How did you get the skin in place and held under the rear skin to drill it? Unlike the .016, the .025 skin is *very* stiff and will not bend very much by hand. Subject: Tail spring dimensions?
Gang: Much thanks to all who replied to my questions about installing the .025 rudder nose skin. After some serious struggling with the .025 skin, I ordered a .016 skin from Zenith, and will use the existing skin to make up the tools/jigs to install the lighter one. Anyone put in a third nose rib? Next question - There don't seem to be any dimensions in the drawings for the part of the thick aluminum tail spring that goes into the Matco tailwheel bracket. It is possible to infer a *maximum* insertion distance because of the need to clear the steering arms. But there is no *minimum* insertion distance. Nor is it clear if you should cut the spring down to 1.25" or 1.5", as there are channels for both in the bracket. (If you use the 1.5" width, you would need to put a thick spacer between the bracket and the spring to fill the stack.) Any experience or advise on this one? Thanks, Andy Elliott, Mesa, AZ N601GE (reserved) 601XL/TD/QB, Corvair, building...

Andy, There are channels machined into the tailwheel for 1.25 and 1.5" springs. Bill Massey and I have been communicating off-list about tail spring options. He had a spring made in the correct dimensions for a very reasonable price locally, and I bought a cheap spring from spruce and modified it (See archives). I will send you the picture of my taiwheel and spring off-list to illustrate - since the attachment was lost in matronics. If anyone else cares about the pic, e-mail me off-list. The insersion distance is evident in the picture. VR/ Brandon Tucker 601 HDS / TD / Corvair 45 hours __________________________________________________

Thanks all.. Yes we just eyed it off neutral and removed 20 mm of the shaft. [Shocked] but it would be real nice if Zenith had a total center to center length. Chris.. Do not archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=84120#84120

Subject: I messed up skinning my rudder
Well, it seems that I was not as caerful as I thought when skinning my rudder. There is a twist... or it is flat on one side. I had the 3/4 in block under the trailing edge, but it didn't turn out correctly. One side is flat, and the trailing edge is up 1 1/2 in on the flip side. Is this critical? What would be the issue with using the rudder as is, or do I need to order a new rudder? There are still parts to cut undersize and holes to drill where they don't belong- this finish work doesn't suit me. What you see is what 50 hrs of farting around will get you. According to Ron at Nuvite, I can plan on at least another pass with grade S, maybe one of C, too to get rid of shop rash. He doesn't know the kind of shop rash I have to deal with. More like a gallon of body putty and a major rebuild! I WILL start on the rear fuse before vacation is over. I think I can, I think I can..... Good building! Bill Naumuk HDS Fuselage Townville, Pa

Subject: Re: Stiff rudder nose skins?
I scratch built the entire rudder from .025" instead of the .016 specified (with ZAC's permission of course). The whole thing went together with no problems whatsoever, and looks IMMENSELY better than the original .016" version (I built both). The biggest benefit I found was that any miss-shapen ribs will confrom to the skin, rather than the other way around. It gives the rudder a much smoother look, at the expense of about 1 pound total weight. As I understand it, your problem is that the Nose Skin is under-bent, and therefore tends to spring outward when slipped under the Trailing Edge Skin? There are two things that will help: Duct Tape and a 2X4. Use the duct tape judiciously to hold the Nose Skin in position while drilling. The 2X4 is used to apply EVEN pressure on the Nose Skin while you coax the bend to the correct angle (i.e.: Squish the thing a little bit more). If I've made things more confusing, feel free to contact me off-list for a better description of what I'm talking about.

Interesting question, I thought about this also. My father and I build toge ther most of the time, and when a problem arises I think, "there has to be a way...other people figure it out." And he always replies with, "Most of t he people that build these things work in the a/c industry or have been aro und it forever!" "We will be lucky too finish this project!" (sometimes he is not a very positive) :) So far my father and I more less "assembled" a Challenger that has been flying for 220 hours now. And now, this is our 2nd project. By the way... my wife and I are both RN's! Happy Holidays Dave! I'm also swimming in Oregon. I'm starting to think I should be building a boat instead of a plane! I head the CAD/CAM department of a precision sheet metal fabricator, and am just starting a precision robotics (CNC Routers and Plasma Cutters) business on the side. This homebuilder thing has been right up my alley, and the 601XL has turned out to be a great machine to cut my teeth on. How about the rest of you aviators out there?
