The "industrial strength" heat gun (resembles a hair dryer) may provide enough heat to do the job. Possibly you can beg, borrow, steal an infrared temperature sensor (Sears, etc) to check progress. It has been eight or nine years since I re-positioned one, but I did use the heat gun and just don't recall that it was a big deal. Bear in mind that when originally installed the Loctite was liquid and the big guy on the wrench was doing the "mechanical" tightening......you'll be working against that AND the Loctite; therefore the need for heat to defeat the glue. Steve, Closest Airport is Libby Army Airfield. It's joint use with the City of Sierra Vista. Three runways, longest is 12,001 feet (capable of taking the space shuttle). Don't let the restricted airspace dissuade you-- listen to ATIS. R doesn't exist when the tower is closed. If open, call approach well out and they will clear you in. Best way is to come down Hwy 90 from the Benson area. There is a cutout in the airspace up to 7000' that you will see on the chart. Key reporting point is the "North-Y" shown on the chart north of the airfield. From you location, you could come east via Sonoita and under the R shelf (below 7000', only the closest in segment touches the ground). You probably can't come direct because the western end of the airspace is where the Army does UAV training. If no UAVs are up, approach will clear you direct, just gotta ask. The circular restricted area SE of Sierra Vista is an aerostat. Big cable underneath it to the ground and it is always active. Please come on down. I'll send a phone number off-list. I'd love to see your project. We've got a good EAA Chapter here. Larry, Thanks for the info. Tells me kinda where your house is. Have flown into Libby before - many years ago. Also Herford, Narco, Chocise, Douglas (both). The update on Libby's airspace is a big help. Fought wildland fires all over that area too! Will post to net next time I plan on flying that way in the 600. Once it is flying. -- Semper Fi, Steven R. for CH701 Hi; I have rotated these nipples on the 912S by heating them with a heat gun. Use a wooden dowel fitted to the inside of the nipple to get some leverage to rotate them. It is not a difficult task. Have fun. Mike UHS Spinners Ch-601HDS 1000+hours Harrison-Hutcheson wrote: > Need feedback and help on a slight problem. I have a 601XL Fuselage kit coming my way at the end of the month and I am researching the archives for all hints, tips and tricks I can find. One item I have seen briefly mentioned, but not in a lot of detail, was the suggestion of adding another access panel in the rear area of the fuselage. Does anybody have a description or picture of what you did that worked out well for you? Hi Dave, The current kit includes a large door in the fuselage bottom. I went ahead and built mine according to the plans without adding anything in that area. I am currently working on the center console between the seats and wonder how I will access the cable terminations contained there. I am also trying to figure out how to give good access to the rear of the instrument panel. Many builders have taken different actions in both of those areas, and the plans still don't include any features for access to these areas after the plane is built. As Paul mentioned the new kit has a large rear access door on the bottom. I got the kit from Zenith and added it and it has made things a lot easier during the build. I made one change to the design and the change. I did away with the hinge. There is really no reason for it and it just gets in the way when you are going to use it. The pro side of the rear panel idea is that you can easily use platenuts and screws to make a slick opening in one or the other side skin back there and gain wonderful access to the lower elevator horn area. The down side is that's a bad place to add weight.... very far from the CG. Bottom line is that Chris Heintz didn''t feel it was needed so it is an elective thing. If you are adding something elective to the plane, throw it up in the air...... if it comes back down it's probably too heavy. Subject: 701 wing spar caps
Ok, I'm going to start building my wing spars. As most 701 builders know, the cap angles (7V2-2 & 3) are a non-standard thickness, special made for Zenith (from what I've heard). I have heard other people using 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/8" angle for the caps, instead of the .093" thick, which is what I want to do. I will be asking Zenith approval for this, but I was trying to figure out the new solid rivet length. Using 1.5 times the rivet diameter as the length protruding before riveting, I came up with 6.144 sixteenths of an inch for a rivet length. (AN-470-5-6.144) Does this mean I use AN-470-5-7, or is it close enough to stay with the AN-470-5-6? What have others done? Ryan

If you look back in the archives this has been covered several times, Zenith approves (or at least Chris did to me in a letter) the use of 3/4"x3/4"x1/8" extrusion 6061-T6 in place of the .093. The weight penalty if you use the 1/8" throughout the airplane is about 4# if memory serves. I asked if any strength was gained in the wings and he said no. Use whatever rivets give you the proper finished shop head, not trying to be cute, sometimes things don't work EXACTLY for some like they do for others so it's best to do a couple samples with what looks close and adjust depending on the results. Ryan

You know how you get attached to things, tools especially. Well this came to me over the holidays and I must say it has made everything come together easier, just like it's name. I keep it near the work area and use it all the time. I boosts the ego and calms the nerves also. Subject: what to do with my pitot
I am building a 601XL from a quick build kit and will be nearing the point where I have to make some pitot decisions. I plan to put in the Dynon D-100 and their website shows an optional pitot that gives angle of attack. My question is if I am building VFR do should I do it? I would welcome any comments from those of you who have actually used this set-up. From the looks of things the AOA pitot uses an angle of attack tube and a pitot tube but no static tube so I suppose I would have to make my own static port. The pitot that comes with the kit already has this but will not work with the AOA. Any real experienced answers would be greatly appreciated. Hi Skip, I feel your pain. The AOA has nothing to do with IFR flight. It is used to tell you how close to a stall your plane is. The notion (I haven't tried it yet, but I have been lectured continuously for a year or two by several of my local chapter members) you use the AOA to adjust your approach speed to allow minimum landing distance without getting too slow so you stall and crash. It automatically adjusts to different aircraft loads and weather conditions so you can fly close to the edge and get maximum results. It also can be used for minimum speed takeoff and climb. I think you can purchase the probe from Dynon for installation before you are ready to buy the big expensive electronic box for your instrument panel. This is probably a good idea since they will probably improve the box in the time between your pitot installation and your first flight. It is best to put off the purchase of any electronic stuff until you really need it. I can't give any great advice on the static port question. It is somewhat a black art to determine how to position one or two of these things to give you unbiased airspeed and rate of climb readings. Surely you don't need to do it the way the kit is arranged to get good results. Good luck, Paul XL fuselage At 06:33 PM 1/3/2007, you wrote: >I am building a 601XL from a quick build kit and will be nearing the >point where I have to make some pitot decisions. WOW, I could use one of those right now! As a matter of fact, I could use about 10 of them positioned strategically around my fuselage. That would make me feel better. Larry Husky 601 XL / Fuselage Do Not Archive

To all you 801 builders I have a question. ZAC lists the wing chord measurement as 5'3". I don't have my slats or flaps installed. It looks like it is about 48" or so without them. Do any of you know the actual measurement with everything put together? Thanks, Dave in Salem
