This is probably a pretty tough request, but any one with CH 801 experience know which drawings have jig patterns, and or are the jigs supplied with the kit or builder fabricated? I just wanted to get a head start on jigs, if the components are not supplied with the kits. Thanks Craig Smith

All- The ability to add pictures to posts has greatly increased the value of the list. The problem with the archives is that all the necessary information to complete a task is dispersed. I'm just as guilty as anyone when it comes to sharing progress real-time, but I've noticed a number of complete "Technical Reports" in the past few months such as Eric's that give all the information to complete a complex task in one location. (The Home Depot bending brake, Gary Boothe's flanging dies, my procedure for installing HDS gearbox bolts and God knows how many more buried in the great archive dumpster). Creation and posting of these compilations is the greatest contribution a lister can make, but everyone else is at a loss as to how to easily retrieve them from the archives. I save them in a personal "Keepers" file, but I trust the Matronics database more than my hard drive. Thus, my suggestion: Matt, could you create a file for Technical Reports and assign a posting password? In other words, when a lister like Eric posts his compilation he types at the bottom, say, "TR Archive-Canopy" (Sort of on the same lines as "Do not archive")? Then, listers would have easy access to complete procedures. It wouldn't hurt to make this applicable to existing archive files. If someone comes across one of these posting gems while rummaging through the dumpster, he can make it easily accessable. What do you think, people? Bill Naumuk HDS Fuselage Townville, Pa

I built the HD instead of the XL, and I had a wing kit to start with so I didn't have to scratch build EVERYTHING... It took about 1200 hours over a period of 14 months to fabricate the rest of the parts, assemble, and test the airplane. Great idea Bill. I saved Erics instructions for canopy fitting, as I am sure many on the list did as well. Like you stated, there are many more excellent "Technical Reports" that would be so helpful...if they could be more easily accessed. You fellas are great assets to us inexperience builders.!!!!!! Subject: Corvair Engine - 1964 vs 65-69...?
Hi Patrick If you are considering the Corvair engine I would strongly suggest that you purchase William Wynnes conversion manual. It will give you all the information you require to make educated decisions, including all the information required to complete the engine and purchasing parts etc. If you have any questions William is unbelievably helpful. Go to his website www.flycorvair.com and have a look. In my opinion (for what it is worth) the Corvair is a viable option mainly due to the excellent builder support that is available. Hi Aaron Sorry for delay in reply actually found weather fit to fly Friday afternoon. Beware if you have a Bendix or A C S switch for confusion there are two terminals marked GRD which are not connected together. For Rays 0 200 the connections we have used are as follows, he has 2 impulse coupled mags fitted. BAT + supply S to starter solenoid coil grd To screen of cables to left & right Mag Both screens are earthed at the Mags. R Core to Right Mag (R connected to grd in Off & Left Mag position) L Core to Left Mag (L connected to grd in Off & Right Mag Position) If you only have one impulse coupler on left Mag then Link R to GRD (other ground terminal) [this GRD terminal is connected to other grd terminal when switch is in start position] I did have drawing of back of switch but it must be in hanger so you will have to check which GRD terminal is which is which with a meter. I believe I got the circuit From Aeroelectric book. The switch manufacturers also recommend you fit a discharge diode across the starter solenoid coil, one was supplied with a new switch we bought to replace an old one we found had a intermittent start contact. As others have pointed out the other terminals are for vibrator retarded starting of which I have no knowledge and is a very old system. I agree, good idea, Bill (Naumuk). In addition to "Technical Reports", how about "Flight Test" or "Flight Report". Sure, we could get out of hand pretty quick with these sub-categorization but these two would cover 96.25% of the good stuff. Tim Garrett N360TM XL + 3300 - 10 hours do not archive

Hi Ken, I'd assume you're building a tri-gear, so a trailer needn't be longer than 60% the length of the plane. I had to make my bed wide enough for the gear, long enough to allow a 4 to 5 foot overhang in back and low enough to be able to pull it up and on. Wings were on their own rack and trailered separately. This trailer just fits in the right forward side of my t-hangar and is about 15 ft long hitch to tail end. It was a free-bee, but required a total rebuild of the bed and tongue. I also added a winch, a jack stand and 3 ramps. It doesn't go much past 50 mph with this arrangement, but it works well enough. http://www.macsmachine.com/images/tjh/hscentersection/full/trailerfront.gif http://www.macsmachine.com/images/tjh/hscentersection/full/trailerwinching2.gif http://www.macsmachine.com/images/tjh/hscentersection/full/trailerwplanespotted.gif http://www.macsmachine.com/images/tjh/hscentersection/full/Zenith-on-the-roadh.jpg http://www.macsmachine.com/images/tjh/hscentersection/full/zenith-to-airport.jpg If you need specific data and dimensions, I can take notes and get them. Don't think the 701 has a radically different gear footprint from a 601 HDS. Larry McFarland - 601HDS Ken Arnold wrote: > Listers, > Can someone provide the length of CH701 with tail removed? Craig, I forgot. You can find the rudder drawing if you go to the 801 home page and click on assembly manuals. Then go to drawing 8RU02. That is the drawing you need for the rudder cradle. They will send you a metal pattern to cut out the curve for the slat jig you need to make. Look at the slat drawings, "positioning of the skin" for the jig instructions. Let me know if I can help. Though, I=92m not as fast as I used to be if I get sent anything sent to me I upload it to the websites. Sometimes I go after pieces and ask for permission but as a rule most people send them to me ahead of time. The Canopy installation is in the Builders Resources section under Zodiac 601. For everyone else please send flight or building stories and helpful tips for the websites. The problem with the archives is that all the necessary information to complete a task is dispersed. Not done yet but here is what I have so far. Planning 20hrs Empennage 201 Engine 37 Facilities 100 Miscellaneous 10 Tools 100 Wings 404 Total to date 872 Received the plans in mid October 2005 and have been keeping a daily log of time and activities. I am working on skinning the first, Left wing, but all ribs and spars are made and set for both wings. I make both left and right parts when I can. Figure I have another year to go. -------- Ron Lendon, Clinton Township, MI Corvair Zodiac XL, ScrapBuilder ;-) http://www.mykitlog.com/rlendon Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=85978#85978
