Hello Listers, has anybody heard of a 601 HD with a Rotax 914? I have a secondhand 914 sitting in my workshop that needs an airframe and am now tossing up ideas for Zodiac number six. My first HD taildragger had a 912 and climbed at 1300 fpm, absolutely loved that. I am aware that even with the 914 the plane will not go much faster than 100 knots but it should climb like a dingbat! Some of my fondest memories of my first 601 was holding her in groundeffect after take off, clocking up 85 knots and then zooming up at 2000 fpm... So if anybody knows wether this combination has been built and maybe what performance it had I would be much obliged! Greeting from downunder, Chris from Perth

Hi Chris, I have a couple of uninformed comments to your question about a Rotax 914 and Zodiac HD. First, I wonder why you would prefer the HD to the newer and higher performing XL. Since it is newer, the support for the XL should be a little better too. Second, I wonder if the designer's limits for engine horsepower are exceeded by the 914. This can be a very dangerous situation. I don't know the exact fatal scenarios, but I think they involve applications of full power while flying slow and with nose high attitude. This can lead to instant spins if the rudder is not sufficiently large to counteract the torque. I would certainly recommend you seek designer approval of such a large engine on any Zodiac. Good luck, Paul XL fuselage do not archive At 04:33 AM 1/9/2007, you wrote: > >Hello Listers, > >has anybody heard of a 601 HD with a Rotax 914? If you already have the 914 onhand, take a look at the Titan T-51 kit. The 914 makes it perform reasonably well and its looks are extraordinary. I spoke with Chris Heintz at the Quality Sportsplanes open house last summer and and he indicated that you get a cleaner shape over all with the rear skin overlapping the front due to boundary layer effect. As he explained it - a forward facing overlap of only the skin thickness is close enough to the wing surface to not be in the airflow. A rearward facing overlap actually changes the airflow slightly generating additional drag. It's almost unmeasurable and given people's intuitive response to overlap (see above) and the proven ability to shed rain with a rearward overlap, he designed most surfaces with the forward skin overlapping the rear. I've traveled to Mexico, Mo and to California to visit Zenith staff. Expensive and time consuming for sure, but little tidbits like this information make it all worthwhile. I'm sorry, let me clarify what the material will be used for. I am building a 701, and the .025 is for the spar web. The spar web then gets capped on the top and bottom with 3/4" x 3/4" x .093 angle. I tried to polish the scratches out, and I can polish them out with a lot of elbow grease, but I think the list has swayed my opinion. I'll use this sheet for the ribs and other wing items, and I'll order a new sheet for the spar web. In the end I'll feel a lot better. (as others have said) By the way, my supplier was extememly helpful, and before I could even tell them that I didn't see the need to send them back, they said they will be sending out new sheets with prepayed package for the damaged sheets back to them. But, I had already cut the sheets, and I'll need more .025 anyway. Thanks everyone who chimed in on this question. It's good to bounce questions off the group to see what others think. I really appreciate it. Ryan Vechinski

Rich, I don't think you can get any IFR package cheaper than the Stratomaster Ultra I mentioned in the last post. It is a very small gyro, so your eyes had better be pretty good. The Dynon unit, Blue Mountain EFIS lite, and Enigma are a bit more, but are much nicer. With the cost of electrical or mechanical attitude gyros what they are, the new batch of digital indicators are the way to go. This is a shot of my panel, which is IFR with ILS. http://www.mcgirt.net/~ars2006/ars2006/Desktop-Pages/Image0.html We often have a marine layer in S. California, and I simply wanted the ability to pop through the layer. I bought the ILS radio and a simple digital CDI off of ebay, to be legal, but plan to reference my VFR GPS for the situational awareness that digital moving maps provide.
