Hello Ryan,
No need for extra thickness in the ribs (or any other part of the aiplane) other
than the specified in the plans... As IK learned from older experienced builders...
"Add only Lightness and Simplicity to any Airplane".
At the end all the extra weight will limit your gasoline on board, passenger weight
and baggage.... Performance always suffer in any "heavy" airplane.
Hope this helps.

Building 601XL.
I'm building a 701, and currently making the wing rib forms. The material will
be .025 6061. What would be an appropriate angle to sand the edges of the forms,
to assure that my flanges come out 90 deg? Is there a formula to use for
different thickness material?

I know you wanted XL build time. The time it takes to build depends on what kind
of finished product you want. I built an HDS, and the factory said you could
do it in 400 Hrs. I had over 2700 Hrs. of time in my kit built plane. Someone
asked me if I built another one how long would it take. My answer was:
I could spend 5000 Hrs. or I could do it in half the time it took me.

As the hours continue to climb building my 601 XL from plans I can't help but
wonder how long it takes the average guy. I think it would be great to know
how long it actually took the average builder to build an XL, would those of you
that have completed your project please post your build time?

The list below is for standard category certified aircraft. It applies on
ly to civil aircraft with a standard category airworthiness certificate.
Experimental/homebuilt aircraft are not standard category aircraft. Unles
s you are going into Mode C territority or plan IFR flights or do acrobat
ics, *no* instruments of any type are required. *None* You can leave your
instrument panel bare aluminum and legally fly that plane in Day VFR con
ditions. (And probably crash shortly after takeoff.)
John Hudson Tiner
>From CFR 14 FAR 91.205
(b) /Visual-flight rules (day)./ For VFR flight during the day, the
following instruments and equipment are required:
(1) Airspeed indicator.
(2) Altimeter.
(3) Magnetic direction indicator.
(4) Tachometer for each engine.
(5) Oil pressure gauge for each engine using pressure system.
(6) Temperature gauge for each liquid-cooled engine.
(7) Oil temperature gauge for each air-cooled engine.
(8) Manifold pressure gauge for each altitude engine.
(9) Fuel gauge indicating the quantity of fuel in each tank.
(10) Landing gear position indicator, if the aircraft has a retractable
landing gear.

Ryan, what you're looking for is the form flange angle to compensate for the "spring
back", which should be about 10 degrees or so. You can always finesse the
flange of the rib with wide seaming pliers to get them just right. Good luck!

Craig,
All I am saying is that his Jab performs the same
as my Corvair, and that we both have not done much to
clean up our planes. I think the Jab is a better
engine, for those who can afford it. I am just
pointing out that they do not, in fact, run nitrous or
have afterburner, and IMHO are not capable of pushing
an HDS anywhere near 150 mph at 75% cruise.
To this point, the best I have heard is 135 mph
cruise in an XL. Can anyone do better than that?

Hi Everyone,
I have 2 pieces of fuel line that I got from ZAC with my 801 kit. One is
22 ft long and the other is 9 ft. It is 3/8 i.d. Anyone want it? I'm
using metal lines and don't need it.

Subject: | Re: RE: Re: Sensenich Composite Propeller |
Hi Gary,
Perhaps you are not aware, but we have a new set of rules for pilots
and planes from the FAA in the United States. For those of us too
old and decrepit to want to fight for a "Special Issuance" medical
certificate, there is the Sport Pilot restriction which allows us to
fly any plane that meets the Light Sport Aircraft limits without a
medical certificate.
The short version of all of this is we can fly a 701 or 601 (most
models, possibly not the HDS) without fighting for the medical
certificate. Higher performance planes like a Verieze don't qualify
under this new rule.
The essence of the Sport Pilot restriction is we must limit our
flying to VFR day operations. Personally, I like those limits
anyway. I might go get an instrument rating if I could do it
without the medical certificate, but that will have to wait a few
years for the FAA to decide they don't like third class medical
certificates any more. That may happen and it may not.
So, there is actually some merit for guys like me to try to squeeze
performance out of my Zodiac XL that I just can't use if it comes
from a heavier or naturally faster plane.

Paul

Hello, Gary
I know what you are talking about about getting that little extra out of
your 601XL. If you are really interested in that, take a look at the
Prince P-Tip.
You can talk to the owner, Lonnie Prince, who has the best prop I've
ever seen. Top of the line company and top of the line owner! Go to
their web site and see what the prop does for climb and cruise. Good
Luck. Joe (N101HD)

Subject: | XL skin overlap question |
OK, I am wondering what some other people are getting for measurements
for the overlap on the front and rear skins. I put my wing jig together
and placed it on the fuse. By the time 6B5-5 is in place and I place
the front skin up against the front of the rear attachment, I have about
34 mm of overlap on the skins. I read somewhere that this distance is
supposed to be approximately 24 mm and I am 10 mm off. I have a set of
damaged factory drilled skins, that I plan on using as a drilling
template for my skins. When I place them in position, the center spar
lines seem to be dead on center, as well as the front gear upright, but
my rear gear upright sets off of the rear gear channel rivet line and is
more towards the rear seat back. I will have to do some more research
on this, but it just seems off to me. I am just worried about the 34 mm
overlap. The rear skin is also a factory drilled skin and I have the
right amount of distance from the front of the lower longeron to the
edge of the rear skin. I think it is 124 mm off hand. Let me know what
some of you have for overlap distance. I am just curious.
