    Subject: Re: 912 vs. 912S
I figured I would weigh in with my thinking on this subject as well. Firstly, keep in mind that I am not flying yet, I am still building. Right from the start of my 701 project I figured that I would either go with a good used 912UL or a new 912ULS. My hope was that I would find a deal on a used 80 hp engine that would be too good to pass up. Failing that, if I had to go brand new, the couple of thousand dollars difference in price would be well worth it for the 100hp 912ULS. I did find a pretty good deal on a 912UL. It was from a CH-701 wrecked in a landing accident. It also came with a bunch of additional parts like a basic panel and a repairable cowl. I'm quite happy with the deal so far but the engine is not installed and running on my plane yet. The final financial test will be once everything is installed and running. Will the 80hp engine be my permanent choice? I don't know. I am planning on going with floats at some point so I might eventually install a 100hp engine. I'll deal with this when I get there. It won't likely be for several additional years. Doug MacDonald NW Ontario, Canada CH-701 Scratch Builder Working on forward fuse skins Need a quick answer? Get one in minutes from people who know. These electronic headsets are not noise cancelling, they simply cut out the noise when it exceeds a certain level. There is a microphone on the outside of the earmuff and small speakers inside. When the noise level is exceeded, the circuitry cuts out the mic and they act like an normal ear muff. For $10 they work great, probably not much good for flying, but instead for things like target shooting where a sudden noise might be damaging to your ears and yet you would like to be able to hear the people around you during "normal" noise levels. Interesting idea...not sure if it would work well in an airplane, though. Thanks, John. Dave

Based on feedback from the list, I ended up placing an order with Lockwood for the 80 hp 912. I agonized over this because with the 912S you get almost a free extra 20 horsepower, just a bit more acquisition cost and no weight penalty. But a couple of guys flying the 912S were suggesting that the 912 was a better match for the 701 based on their experience and their logic was convincing to me. George in Milwaukee

    Subject: Removing rivets
Gang: I needed to remove a bunch of rivets from my QB fuselage. (Why is another story...) This is a 3-step process which involves [1] punching out the mandrel, [2] drilling off the head and [3] drilling/pushing out the shop head. I modified an automatic pin punch into a one-hand tool for punching out the mandrels, so that I could do this as a 1-man job. The other hand holds a support bar behind the panel to make the punch more effective. Modification takes 5 minutes. Tool costs $4. Time and trouble saved is a *lot*. The tool is shown and discussed at: http://members.cox.net/n601ge/drawings/autopunch.html FWIW, Andy Elliott, Mesa, AZ N601GE (reserved) 601XL/TD/QB, Corvair, building...

And don't forget that water cooled engines will be all the rage as global warming makes air cooled engines obsolete in the near future. No better way to get a front row seat to watch the end of civilization as we know it than to be in an airplane! George I made the same decision today based on this thread. I just placed my order with lockwood for a 912 80 hp. I've been real busy at work lately and have not been posting or reading the list but this morning I read of the price increase and had to make a decision. Up untill now I intended to get the 100 horse but I was swayed by the comments today and recently.....Geoff Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=88964#88964

That might explain the ones at Harbor Freight, but the $10.00 ones I bought actually reduce the noise. Another engineer where I work demonstrated them to me before I bought them. We stood at a place in the plant that had a noticeable air handler noise, probably in the ceiling above us, I put on the headsets first with the noise canceling turn off, no change, then I turned it on just like those $1000, Bose headsets the background noise fade away.
