all the circus for the airfield for only about 50 euro. he can do this on all
garmins runs absolut trouble free. see in the attachment my 601 with the 295
installed. you can get nice 2nd hand 295 for about 600 euro so thats good value
for money.

Hello Dave,
Very easy,
PV is in the Pacific Coast, make an almost horizontal line to Mexico
City, Just about 1/3rd of the distance from PV to Mex is Guadalajara,
South of Guadalajara (about 30 miles) is Chapala Lake, the biggest
natural lake in Mexico.
Attached is a pdf file from Google Earth.
If you have Google Earth our club is in:
20=BA18'35"N 103=BA09'36"W
In the 701 I am about 1:20 hrs from PV depends on wind direction and
speed.

In my personal experience, the 701S is a must in airport altitudes
over 5,000 ft ASL. With the clutch, there is no shaking...
Also, remember the aviation saying, when need to climg over
trees, all the extra power you have is welcome...
Our last X country about a month ago was to Atizapan, 8,120 ft

The advantages of the 80HP were: easier starting, doesn't shake the tail
apart (although I have redone all the HS mounts, both on the fuselage
and HS in .063), the 100hp only needed if flying floats, the only
benefit without floats is you get a bit of a boost on take off (I

might never get around to it and shortening take off distance in a 701,
well how short does it need to be?), the 912 S needs a gearbox clutch
and the prop alternatives are slightly more limited, the 80hp has a
lower price, slightly less fuel usage, less vibration and somewhat
higher reliability. My whole life I have always considered more
horsepower to be better, but now I am

Lind,
I'm flying a 601HDS and use a Lowrance Airmap 500 in the mid west US
where it's essentially plains country. I'd recommend
the Lowrance 600 over the 2000 because of its size. Much better fit to
the cockpit area. I mounted mine on the stick so it sets
between and above the grips. For your area, the 600 color indicated
ground elevation warning would be a plus. See link,

Good luck,

I have absolutely no experience flying anywhere in Europe so I have no clue as
to whether a regional radar summary , traffic avoidance systems, localizer displays
etc are available to you. Those are the features that distinguish a Garmin
GPS from the Lowrance Airmap 2000C. The Garmin would certainly interface more
easily with the Garmin equipment you already have but again, I have no idea
if that is important to you or not.
What I can tell you is this, If you simply want a large bright color screen display
of GPS moving map and course data with an easily accessed airport database,
the Lowrance is a much better deal. I have been told it can be linked to a
wing leveler or autopliot to steer the course for you enroute on a X-C but I have
not actually seen that or done that. In the USA the Jeppeson database for
Lowrance includes terrain elevation data which can be clearly displayed on the
the lower segment of a split screen.
Hope that helps,

Zed Smith has missed only one step. In procedures I received from Nick

spirit level on the upper longerons, also achieved by altering the nose
wheel tire pressure.
Otherwise a very thoughtful and accurate post Zed.

Not on the upper longerons, there is an A-E reference line that you must
create to level the fuselage, see
7-F-2. The upper longerons have a slight curve to them when installed on the
side skins. You also might want to think about blocking the fuselage level
in all axis, the tires and spring/ bungee gear will move as you put weight on
them. Why chase the level with a moving fuselage?

Hi all,
I am seeking a little clarification to the 701 wing rigging issue... I
dont understand the need for all of this fuselage leveling... I agree
with Zed's procedure (and have used it quite successfully) of wing
rigging.... notice that all adjusting is done in reference to the
fuselage itself or the opposite wing.. nothing I noticed entails rigging
in relationship to 'level' with the earth. You could complete Zed's
procedure with the fuse sitting on a sloped parking ramp.... kinda
similar to the issue of making 'sure' your table is level before
building your wings!! (Does it make a difference?)
So - I am simply looking for understanding on how leveling helps the
wing rigging process... inquiring minds want to know!
Thanks!

Has anybody had any issues with leaks or sender replacement that would make me
want to re-consider placing them on the end per the plans?
Any hints on making sure they seal right the first time?

Dave, I installed my fuel senders on the sides as well.
Tested for a day or so full of water, then tested with air and balloons for
another day.
No issues (except for ensuring the balloons and other exit points weren't
leaking).
Note that I am not flying yet.

On my CH640 I have the senders mounted on the ends. The first time I filled the
tanks with 100LL, there was a very slow leak at one of the bolts holding the
senders in. I put a little seal lube on the bolt and tightened it back up. No
more leaks in almost 2 years and 330 hrs. I did have to replace a bad sender after
about 50 hours which wasn't a lot of fun through the little access hole,
but it wasn't a big deal.

I put my tail together on my 701. Looks cool! Wish I'd heard about those

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how the elevator upper stop works. Nothing
in the plans. It just seems to interfere with the gusset eventually. There
is no 701 photo guide for this, but the 801 guide shows an added extrusion
to perform the stop.
How did you guys do it?

The objection to the size and shape of the Lowrance 2000C has come up a few times
in discussion. Its size and shape are why it is easier to read... it has a
larger screen. It does not have to fit in the panel, in fact I don't plan to put
mine in the panel. I hope the aircraft outlives the GPS unit so putting it
into the panel invites a problem if and when I change later on. One of the benefits
of a handheld unit like the 2000C is that it switches easily to land mode
or marine mode making it very useful in the car or boat. I plan to mount mine
on a RAM mouint system on the center console of the 601XL (dual sticks) in the
area between the armrest and the panel. It will come out and come home with
me between flights just as it does currently in my ultra-not-so-light. For me,
bigger is better....... or at least easier to read.

they had the extra hat stiffner as per the Std fuel tanks.
I spoke to Zenith and they said to just cut the extra one off.

Chris - I'm sure Zenith told you to cut off the extra "L" not a hat stiffener.
15 gallon tanks take up more room in the leading edge so nose rib # 4 is mounted
further outboard. I had the same question as to what to do about removing
it and they said cutting it off was better than drilling out the rivets holding
it on. It gives the spar a little extra strength. The hat stiffeners in
question are something else entirely, and my factory built spar has only three.
The outboard one shown on the drawing is absent.

Chris,
That's strange. My spars (for long range tanks) came without the "extra" hat channel,
but they did have an extra vertical angle (for nose ribs) that had to
be cut off.

Jon,
I suppose you are right as far as setting the wings. While I did level my
fuselage, I don't regret it since it was easy to make sure there wasn't any
twist to the wings when installing the rear struts and it made it easy to rig
the angles on the flaperons.

Hi all,
I am seeking a little clarification to the 701 wing rigging issue... I dont
understand the need for all of this fuselage leveling... I agree with Zed's
procedure (and have used it quite successfully) of wing rigging.... notice
that all adjusting is done in reference to the fuselage itself or the opposite
wing.. nothing I noticed entails rigging in relationship to 'level' with the
earth. You could complete Zed's procedure with the fuse sitting on a sloped
parking ramp.... kinda similar to the issue of making 'sure' your table is
level before building your wings!! (Does it make a difference?)
So - I am simply looking for understanding on how leveling helps the wing
rigging process... inquiring minds want to know!
Thanks!

I mounted the Lowrance Airmap 1000 on my panel. See
link below:

There are a whole lot more functions to the unit that
I never use, and am too lazy / busy to read the
manual. The menu functions are fairly intuitive,
making it easy to use straight out of the box. I have
dropped mine a couple of times, and it hasn't missed a
beat. I would get a used one off of ebay. There are
usually several for sale at any given time.

Subject: | Re: Handheld GPS? |
Hello Lind,
My personal experience, as out of USA GPS user...
I have a Garmin 295 (Dad's gift 2 years ago),
We try to use Garmin here, because most of the pilots (99%) here has that brand,
that simple. the other users are on their own, if you undertand that,
Given this, there is always an "expert" around that will help us updating and
"charge" the way points and airports...
Yes, outside USA the database is very limited, we need to put most everythng
in, also most of the cities have diferent names (?).
Forget about the modern ones with "weather" this bonus is only available in USA.
BUT on the other side of the coin, the mountain avoidance ones ("red mountain
with a cross")... sure does work perfectly, at least here in Mexico, Saved a
local pilot life in a sudden weather change (fog) two weeks ago.
He was realy lucky and cold blooded, not to spin or crash... Yes, plain old
over confidence but made it. Was flying an RV 6 with his kid, has double more
gray hair and experience now...
Another hint,,,, Search around local pilots, some rich ones, change sooner or
later to the newer GPS, buy them the second hand one, sometimes like new.
but will lots of waypoints already in.
Here we store all the waypoints in a Excel page. A local pilot colects the data
we all send him and keeps us updated.
Hope this helps.
Saludos

Lind,
I'm flying a 601HDS and use a Lowrance Airmap 500 in the mid west US
where it's essentially plains country. I'd recommend
the Lowrance 600 over the 2000 because of its size. Much better fit to
the cockpit area. I mounted mine on the stick so it sets
between and above the grips. For your area, the 600 color indicated
ground elevation warning would be a plus. See link,

Good luck,

I called Zenith about this as I was making my spars. I have the 15 gal tanks and
4 hat sections per the 6K0 plans. I just makes sense to have the added strength
and Zenith agreed.
