Subject: | Re: Upper extruded Ls |
I used this technique, but using a vice (vise?) for better control.
One problem is that the longeron tries to bend sideways as you bend it. My
solution was to clamp both longerons back to back to form a T section and
bend them both together, they tend to stay flat if you do that, as they are
each trying to bend in oppposite directions, so cancel out. It also has the
advantage that you get both longerons to exactly the same curve - and if you
are REALLY lucky, it might even be the CORRECT curve!!

I've found a cheap source for canopy friendly locks. Your average PC usually has
a suitable lock in the back of it. (Provided you can find the keys.)
I don't know about the suitability for outdoor applications, but then I wouldn't
probably know that even if I bought one in a hardware store.
Now if I could only find an electronic version for my "Starter Enable" switch...

Sorry Guys,
I just got off the phone with the machinist and he wants $70 each for the LRI.
Scott Laughlin (cookingwithgas@hotmail.com)sells them for $50 plus the face and
instructions. So I guess that would be the way to go.
Scott is trying to get his plane in the air, so maybe it will be awhile before
he can get too them. If you just can't wait, this guy can do them now.
I got more time than money, If you are short on time let me know.

All-
Wow! This is the way things should work- tons of ideas rather than
locked and loaded flamethrowers! The main points are:
1. What's the sense of the wood template if all you're using it for
is to check the final bend?
2. Larry Mac's jig makes sense from a physics standpoint. An HF
bender is ideal if you want to spend the money (Or find a place to store
it, in my case).
3. You have to make sure the bend occurs perpendicular to the
workbench or you induce an axial twist.
Here's my basic idea- feel free to chime in-
1. Cut the center chunk of the template (Between the straight parts)
out of 2x4.
2. Cut a kerf on the top and bottom of your little template the
thickness and width of the L.
3. Set the rollers of Larry's jig maybe 10mm outboard of the 850mm
on the left side of the template and the 100mm on the right side of the
template.
4. Use a c-clamp to drive the template into the L angle. You might
have to do a little tweaking, but not much.
Thoughts?

Subject: | Strapping the Stab |
Hi All,
Relative newbie lurker here. I have started my 601XT with kits from Zenith. Rudder
went together fine. I am now on the stab and have what may be a dumb question.
Here goes - the kit comes with alignment holes drilled for the skin. I have attached
the lower side, turned everything over and am ready to close. If I follow
the procedure of using the straps to pull everything into alignment, I quickly
pull the forward flange pre-drilled holes in the skin past the center line
of the flange.
Shouldn't I just line up the holes with the midline I have drawn on the flange,
drill and cleco? Wouldn't that guarantee alignment of the rest of the skin?
What am I misssing here?

Hi Ron,
I think that is a question for Zenith tech support. Most of us
(including me) didn't have the predrilled holes you have and we have
not experienced this sort of problem. Perhaps there is a problem
with the holes or maybe not.

Hi Bill,
If you have the template as nothing more than a left and right line on
the table, you're there. Just bend the thing and you'll find out that
you'll have it
done in less than 30 minutes both sides including adjustments. A
template can be flipped to assure symmetry. Just pushing into a
template will leave
you with a need for another 10 degrees or more. Easier to bend just a
little bit at a time to come up on a line or template.

So far I have written three e-mails to Jabiru asking questions and
have yet to receive an answer. The last one was, is there a maintenance

if a manuel is available and where I could get one I would be greatfull.
I am going to try to contact Jabiru direct in Austraula and see if I

Did you have the correct spacers under the skeleton and everything

All-
Wow! This is the way things should work- tons of ideas rather than
locked and loaded flamethrowers! The main points are:
1. What's the sense of the wood template if all you're using it
for is to check the final bend?
2. Larry Mac's jig makes sense from a physics standpoint. An HF
bender is ideal if you want to spend the money (Or find a place to store
it, in my case).
3. You have to make sure the bend occurs perpendicular to the
workbench or you induce an axial twist.
Here's my basic idea- feel free to chime in-
1. Cut the center chunk of the template (Between the straight
parts) out of 2x4.
Thoughts?

Thats the way to do it Bill. Metal has spring back and always needs to be bend
a little farther than the final result. Do as Larry says, sneak up on it a little
at a time. That setup will give you the control you need.

Subject: | Maintenance Manual |
Tracy,
There are multiple Jabiru dealers. I have had good luck with
all of them, but one is somewhat harder to get a hold of. Try posting on
the Matronics JabiruEngine list. At least two dealers are trying to get
customers to use it. There is a lot of traffic on the Yahoo JabiruEngine
Group including the dealers. Normally, you can get Andy at SunCoast on the
phone directly. At JabiruUSA, Dana will get an answer for you and phone you
back. I haven't used the West Coast dealer much, but the reports I have
seen are good.
At the JabiruUSA workshop I attended, there was something like a
maintenance manual put together by Don Richtar for the class. It has a
checklist for each inspection, typical troubleshooting problems found, types
of sealants to use, engine part numbers, torque values, etc. Ask Pete about
it. If you don't have any luck, let me know and I ask him if I can copy
mine for you.
Jeff Davidson
So far I have written three e-mails to Jabiru asking questions and have yet
to receive an answer. The last one was, is there a maintenance manuel
available for the Jabiru 3300 engine. If anyone out there knows if a manuel
is available and where I could get one I would be greatfull. I am going to
try to contact Jabiru direct in Austraula and see if I can get some answers.

Rick & Tod,
Both of you sent me the same thing and It's just what I need,
Thanks to both of you for the response. I am goint to print the entire
manual out 40 pages at a time and then put all in a binder.
For those of you who have experenced a rough running engine try
looking at the little hose that goes from the carb to the filter box.
If it's disconnected, that may be your problem. It was mine. If
everything is hooked up right the Jabiru 3300 engine will run very
strong and smooth as silk.
