It is a Cover-It shelter that I picked up for "FREE". It had some tears in it so that is why there is a Blue Poly on the inside. It keeps the snow and rain off of me. I don't have problems with snakes, since I live at an altitude of 9,100 feet. Snakes don't like the thin/cold air. I get an average of 130"-150" of snow each year, so I did some truss-beefing-up to help in that area. For Mooch-in-laws, this is where I reside, instead of the house. Size is 12'x30' but since there is a door on the other side, I walled of the last 4' and use that as storage. The bench is 4'x12.5' with storage shelves. The upper shelf is for un-formed flat sheets of Aluminum. The steel-tube frame along the wall is for the Smyth Sidewinder I am also building. Anyway, try to do whatever it takes to get your plane built. For temperature extremes, Summer time is ok, Winter time, I usually call it quits and go in the house when it cools down to 18-20F. Many years after touring the school, I could still smell that RAF epoxy in the room, even after the school tried to cover it up with paint! I can remember the kids all wearing rubber gloves and smearing hand cream on to keep the epoxy off their skin. I can remember the kids "itching" to get home after a night of sanding parts. I still don't know what long term effect it had on my health. With my Zenith 601 XL, the only clean up is my shop vac picking up the rivet stams off the floor! the 601 is a joy to build, faster to build, cleaner to build, more satisfying feeling of accomplishment after the parts are made, and I feel it's about the safest homebuilt plane on the market along with other aluminum planes like the Sonex. Living in Oshkosh and working for news radio on the convention site, I see the planes that have accidents during the convention. When I arrived on the crash site of an EZY, I couldn't find the plane, just very small chunks of foam and glass that could fit in the palm of your hand. I also remember seeing a crew picking up the remains of a Glassair with a shovel. You can't beat the value of a 601 (any style). Even if you decide to abandon the project in the future, there is a big market for the parts you made. It's safe and economical, you can land it on a dirt runway, it fits a big guy, engine out landings are safe and survivable, visibility is excellent, and there is a huge support group. That's what sold me. If it's speed and slippy there is no doubt the glass will win out. If it's durability I don't think you can beat the aluminium. When I did composites in trade school we had to wear full one piece body suits... A fresh one every day, two if we took off the suit for dinner (a must). The suits and the positive ventilation of the composites room kept scratching to somewhere around nil. Aluminium can also bring you into contact with some nasty chemicals like Alumiprep and Alodyne. The nice thing about aluminium is it is totally inert to UV radiation. You can also come across a few things like dissimilar metal corrosion but by and large unless you want to build a race plane or be the fastest kid on the block I think aluminium is the better choice. There is still plenty of composite you can add to an aluminium structure if you want...e.g. wing tips, fairings, cowls, instrument panels etc. Noel > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-zenith-list-server@matronics.com > [mailto:owner-zenith-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Joe > Sent: Thursday, March 22, 2007 1:55 PM > To: zenith-list@matronics.com > Subject: Zenith-List: composite VS Aluminum > > > > I had the opportunity to build a Quickie many years back in a project > schoolflight class with a bunch of high school kids.
