Now theirs a thought Sun-N-Fun! Make sure you try for Thursday and join
in on the BBQ Thursday evening after the show. The event runs from
5pm-8pm. So far we have over 155 people registered to attend. The
Designer Chris Heintz will also be in attendance. Great way to meet some
of the builders and owners. Just go to this link
http://www.ch601.org/BBQ/bbq.htm and sign up. This will be your ticket
to attend, there is no cost involved, but donations at the event are
appreciated as the event is not company sponsored.

Also if you are serious about this it would behoove you to travel to
Sun-N-Fun. Aside from the factory's planes there should be multiple
builders
and XLs there. Yes, I realize it is 6.5 hour drive. But this is a big
investment.

Check in with your local EAA chapter. I did just that and was able to fly right
seat with an instructor in the left. The 601XL is a very predictable aircraft
with good crosswind control. It was blowing 17 and gusting to 25k on the day
we flew, all the landings (5) were crosswind. After the flight I called Mexico,
MO and placed an order.

Hi Rusty,
I'm in Rayne, LA which is about 5 - 6 hours to your west down I-10 (15 miles
past Lafayette). That's definitley not a short drive either but you are welcome
to visit if you find yourself driving out this way for other reasons.
I'm building a 601XL with a Jabiru 3300 and a Sensenich composite GA prop. I'm
working the the #!@*%&!!! canopy at this point. I'm still hoping to have it
flying by the end of the year but you know how that goes.

We have tried a number of "aircraft" (i.e. expensive) waxes and polishes
for Plexiglass. Then, people at the Waterloo Airport put us on to Nu
Finish (Reed-Union Corp., Chicago), an ordinary car polish in an orange
squeeze-bottle container, which works MUCH better than anything else. We
have used it for 3 years. It is cheap. Others around here have used it
longer; it does not produce any discolouration. We tend to use it with an
old towel. In Canada, it is sold in Canadian Tire Stores, but I believe
it is very common in the U.S. They also make Nu Finish Scratch Doctor
(which I bought for my car), but I have not tried it on Plexiglass because
I don't have any scratches in my 601 canopy; it works well on car clear
coat paint. Nu Finish also works well on polycarbonate, which I used for
the landing-light lenses in the wingtips.

Subject: | Re: flying or fairly complete 601XL projects near Pensacola |

Thanks for the additional comments. Can't make SNF this year, so that's not an
option.
I've been through the builders list at Zenith before, and tried to contact the
builders listed in Niceville, and Pensacola. This has been about a year ago,
and nothing really came of it. I suppose I could try again, but my hope was that
someone on the list/forum would be close by.
I heard about one other XL builder in the Pensacola area via an EAA club contact,
and I'm trying to get in touch with him. They're supposed to be fairly far
along with the project, so it might work out perfectly.
Ed, thanks for the offer. I happen to know right where Lafayette is, since I used
to go there to work on an MRI scanner. I don't cover that area for work anymore,
so I don't think I'll be heading your way anytime soon. Good luck with
your project. I can see that canopies are never fun, regardless of the type
of plane :-)
Cheers,
Rusty

James,
I carved a piece of 2 x 4 to conform to the inner shape of the filler neck so that
I could put some leverage on it. The wood splintered before the neck moved.
I stopped there because I was afraid of damaging the threads in the welded
flange which would have really been a pain.
The threads are small and fairly soft and I guess the fact that there is a waiting
list for the tap indicates it is not an uncommon problem.
I'm glad you solved your problem OK.

Tom, I built my 601XL in a 20'x16' shop. It was adequate for building,
but I had to store the wings in my house while building the fuselage.
One thing to watch is the overhead clearance when you install the
canopy. It requires 9'1" height to open my canopy.

I was one of the builders that used the ZAC tap and countersink kit. I got the
job done but it was not easy.
I used delrin (a machinable plastic) for extracting the filler neck. It will never
splinter, however it is expensive, it was a machine shop discard so it didn't
cost me anything. I think if you made it of aluminum or steel it would work
if you made it under size and wraped it with many turns of duct tape.
I don't think you could damage the threads if slowly applied the torque.

Tom, Building the shed from scratch is much more economical than
building the shed from kits. The material list also helps you to buy
the materials as you need them, or to take advantage of any sales or
discounts on stuff you will need later. (Whenever you are in Home Depot
ask someone in the lumber department what's on the "cull cart" . As to
building a higher roof, think in terms of putting the entire structure
on a 2 foot or so base - such as laying two courses of cement block
underneath the outside wall. Then the entire structure will be 16"
higher using 8" blocks. The only adjustment would be the door will have
to lowered.

Where did these filler necks come from?
If you can't get the tap, I suppose using a dremel with a wire brush may help clean
the thread up. I'd try them before instaling in in the plane.

In my best practices guide from Zenith they say you can use a large drill. I don't
anymore though. I use die grnider with a Scotch-Brite pad or in limited in
work area, a file laid flat.

I made my "stuck neck removal tool" from steel with a two foot handle. I
wrapped several layers of duct tape around the point where it engaged the
fitting. The fitting then came out easily but it did make a couple of small
indentions inside the neck. The indentions were easy to clean up using a pattern
file. Then I wore out two Dremel wire wheels cleaning the threads. After that
they screwed back in by hand using a piece of 1/4 inch plywood to turn them.

I had trouble getting one out before I had them installed in the wing. I
put some 3-in-1 oil around the threads and let it seep in. Still took some
real doing at first, but then it got going and came right out. (Probably
not helpful if it is already installed because you wouldn't have access to
the threads, but I'm not sure what stage the OP is at!)

Tim,
I had the same problem but called Roger before it was to late. I did have to
buy a new cap because i roughed it up pretty good removing it. The tap did
the job, I can now remove the caps with my hand using a towel to prevent

Subject: | Re: Fuel Filler Neck Woes |
I have enjoyed reading this thread. When I did mine, the system was still not well
though out. The filler necks could not screw down deep enough into the female
fittings on the tanks to make contact with the LE skins. That was because
they had a brain jam in the design/fabrication dept. and they were welding the
female fittings on the outside (the top) of the tank skin. I had to bevel the
female fittings by myself (freehand) then clean the threads with a wire brush
as mentioned elsewhere in this thread.
After working through the problem, I called the factory to suggest to the brothers
Heintz that they get the tanks made with the female fitting welded inside
the tank (under the top skin of the tank) so that the filler neck woudl have more
room to screw down before bottoming out. I was told that they had just begun
doing that....... I was just a bit too early to get that update. No way to
avoid that sort of cosmic coincidence...... manure occurs.

I generally use a drill bit somewhat larger than the hole and just turn it
back and forth between my fingers just enough to remove the burrs. Not
enough to chamfer the holes. I found this faster than using the commercial
de burring bits. Occasionally I would use one of the inside deburring tools
when getting at the back of the hole was either difficult or down right
impossible. Deburring with a drill is awkward and there is a good chance of
chamfering a hole.

One more suggestion. If it's tight or grabby going in, you might
consider smearing some valve grinding compound on it, and "lapping" the
threads just enough for a smooth thread. Wipe and rinse very thoroughly
(don't want to ingest carbide into the engine) and it should work
smoothly. I've done this on problematic bolt threads, and sliding
pieces, and it worked well.

I saw filler caps exactly like the one ZAC shipped me in the Aircraft

I had a similar problem. It appears that when they welded the tanks for the
quick-build kit no one thought to check them and see if the neck would still
screw in. Unfortunately, mine were VERY warped. I called Flight Crafters and
Mexico and after what seemed like a very long time someone finally said I
would be receiving "the tap". I used it and eventually the neck would screw
in reasonably well. To this day the left tank doesn't screw in smoothly
because it was warped so badly. Only then did I find out about the problem
with the neck not screwing in far enough to allow for a flush fit. You
guessed it! Another set of phone calls and emails and long waiting until I
was told I would be receiving "the counter-sink". The wait could have been
longer but I would not ship back "the tap" until I got an answer. All in
all, this set me back quite a while on my "quick-build". I could expect this
if I were building from scratch or basic kit but when I paid the extra $$$$
for the quick-build kit I did expect some things to be taken care of. Don't
EVEN get me started on the "leather interior for a limited time"!!!!!!!!!!!!

Subject: Zenith-List: Fuel Filler Neck Woes
I'm posting this in the hope that others may be spared the problem that I
faced with my fuel tank filler. About two months ago I installed
capacitance type fuel level sensors in my 15 gallon ZAC made tanks.
Deciding it would be a good idea to test for leaks I put about 5 gallons of
fuel in each one, screwed the filler neck in by hand, installed the cap and
set them aside for a couple of weeks. There were no leaks and after I
drained the fuel out I went to remove the filler neck. The left tank came
apart ok but the neck in the right one moved about half a turn and stuck.
I and an A & P mechanic friend tried everything we could think of but in the
end had to carefully cut the filler neck out. It was almost like the
threads had welded together, even though I had used oil on them before
installing. For what it was worth, I had noticed a couple of spots that
turned a little harder when I screwed it in.
I contacted ZAC and they informed me that they would put me on the list to
borrow the "big tap" to clean the tank flange's threads out. It was a few
weeks before it was my turn but when it came this week I used it
successfully to clean up the threads in both tanks. When finished, the new
neck (almost a $70 part) screwed in and out very easily.
Today I installed it using a thread sealant and it when on very nicely. I
would recommend to anyone that if your filler does not turn in easily that
you may want to clean up the threads before trying to install. I've heard
of other builders that have had similar problems of freezing threads and it
can be costly in time and money to repair.

Subject: | SPAL linear actuator from Surplus Center |
Has anyone purchased one of the linear actuators
discussed on this list a couple of months ago from
Surplus Center? I ordered the 2" SPAL actuator (and
mount bracket) for use on my CH-701 and it arrived
today. Looks like a well built unit. Much better
than the plastic one I already had.
I am wondering if anyone has any installation pictures
or information on how to mount an electric actuator to
the plane for the flapperons. So far the only way I
can see to mount it is to the gear channel. This will
mean that the actuator will be extended when the
flapperons are retracted. Not ideal but with the
actuator being metal, that shouldn't be a problem.
I'm thinking there will have to be some stiffening
done to the top of the channel as well since it is
only 032.
A looked on the SPAL website tonight and checked the
wiring and specs for the actuator and found the have a
push button controller. It will give me three presets
with push button selection. Also according to the
instructions it is possible to adjust to settings in
between the presets by pressing 2/3 to extend and 1/2
to retract.
All told this should cost me about $150.00 with
shipping. Not too bad of a deal if it works like I
figure it will.

Subject: | Scratch building a CH-701 year in review |
Well, it's official, I've been at this CH-701 scratch
built project for one year as of March 31. I have
about 650 hrs listed in my builders log. That seems
like a pretty good effort on my part.
For my efforts I have a fuselage sitting on the
landing gear with the Rotax 912 UL sitting on the
mount (not bolted down yet). I have a rudder, h-stab
and elevator in storage. I also have my spar blanks
cut, wing ribs cut and bent, and a whole pile of other
misc parts ready to be bent. I also have a basic VFR
panel mounted in place. The panel came with the
engine package.
This is my first homebuilt project unless you count
the AcroSport ribs I made a couple of years ago. I
wouldn't be where I am today if it wern't for my local
EAA chapter, Jon's Homebuilt Help DVDs and Mark and
David from CANZAC. Also this list has been a great
help.
Thanks for your help so far guys.

This is straying from Zeniths, but a 1982 152 Aerobat manual that I
happen to have shows a 33 ft span, plus or minus a few inches
depending on the wingtips fitted. So Aerobats don't seem to be
"clipped" compared to their non-aerobatic predecessors.
